Dema, also known as the Mana Goddess or the Great Goddess the main antagonist and a supportive character in Echoes of Mana.

Background[edit]

Dema was born with her twin sister as part of the Mana clan in a small unnamed village. There she befriended Diospyros and was taught the ways and customs of being a Mana maiden to prepare for her upcoming duties once the current Mana Tree would wither. On that fateful day, the consulted with the village elder who declared the holy tree to be dying. She announced the grave news to her sister and Diospyros and told them she would fulfill her duties as instructed to become the next Goddess. Nona objected to that decision and pressed Dema to reconsider, but the older sister reassured her sibling, telling her she had been prepared for that moment since she was little. Dema then asked Diospyros to be her knight for the ceremony and bring her to the Sanctuary. Nona scolded her friend for keeping his mouth shut, but decided to rush to the temple to see her twin sister for the last time. Unbeknownst to Dema, Nona took her role as the ascending Goddess by pleading the current Mana Goddess to become the next one in her sister's place. As the younger sister was about to transform, Dema & Diospyros watched helplessly as she succesfully ascended. This action led Dema into despair as she would be the one who would lose an important piece of her life.

According to Diospyros, Dema & him returned to the village and she became a shut-in, lamenting her predicament for quite some time. She felt angry at herself for obeying the law of her people if that means leaving someone behind. A bewitching voice echoed in her head, telling her she could choose her own destiny with her help. The young maiden declared she would want a world were none shall be sacrificed but her. Full of desires, Dema was lured by the enticing voice who took her to Mavolia, where they discussed part of their contract. For ten years, the maiden disappeared and plotted her revenge on the law of the Mana clan.

Anise first brought Dema to a barren world where the Mana Tree had died along with everything, suggesting this would be the perfect place to root her Sanctuary. To convice her further, the Great Witch brought the last to humans from this world to use as their puppet. She also gave each of them half a soul, as she was usure to which it belonged to in the first place. She told the maiden she needed to use a docile vessel for their plan to run smoothly. Anise concluded her visit by telling Dema to take all her time and to leave the two bodies aside until they need them.

History[edit]

Echoes of Mana[edit]

“The alter ego of the Mana Tree that serves as the source of life. She seeks the Mana Sword in order to restore the world that has been lost.”
Square Enix Official Website

When Dema felt the time was right, she made herself look like the Mana Goddess and called upon the Harvester to wake up from their slumber. Then, she explained to them this Sanctuary was the only remnants of a lost world and entrusted them the task of venturing into lost echoes to look for the Mana Sword. She made sure to keep each of their encounter short to appear to grow weaker by the day, so the situation would by taken seriously. Before her Mana Swordsman carried on their task, she gave them a little companion named Baashear to guide them. Little did they know Dema could also spy on them the more echo they'd visit, making her aware of their every move.

During the protagonist's first trip into an echo, Dema woke up the other twin and ordered them to stay by her side while their other half goes on an adventure. It is unclear if she let the lookalike know more about her plan or not, but they obediently carried on her will. During each failed attempt at finding the holy blade, she always took upon herself to encourage her Mana Swordsman to never give up in their quest.

During chapter six of season 1, the Harvester is unexpectedly warped into a strange dimension were he eavesdrops on a conversation between two young girls playing with dolls. One says to the other they must follow the story to a T while the other would like to experiment as they play. The rigid ways of the first sister makes the other bolt out of the room in frustration. The eldest one remaining, named Dema, asks the Hero to go after her sibling. When the protagonist makes their way to Nona's hideout, she tells them of the story of the Mana clan, during which a maiden must take the place of the Mana Tree and become the new goddess when the old one withers. She reveals her twin sister Dema was chosen as the Goddess which makes Nona understandably uneasy, as she whishes she could carry some of her burden.

After retrieving the Mana Sword from within themselves, the Harvester returns to the Sanctuary where he is congratulated by the Mana Goddess. She then tells them to perform a flesh-piercing ritual to revive the Mana Tree. As the blade pricks her chest, she enthusiastically claims to have become a true Mana Goddess. She unleashes a dark wave of energy, knocking both the Harvester and Baashear out and starts growing a Hollow Tree in place of the Mana Tree.

During the Hero's slumber, she thanks them for fulfilling their duty and hope they enjoy their eternal rest, for this was a necessary sacrifice. Another voice, however denies the protagonist respite, saying this is only the beginning and tell them to open their eyes. The Hero finds themselves in another Sanctuary created by the truly ascended maiden & Mana Goddess Nona. She explains her twin sister was not able to accept her fate as the newly appointed Mana Goddess and decided to set things right, and became a Goddess through the power of both the Harvester and the Mana Sword. Nona gives an echo fruit to them and the Hero, Baashear, and Mousseline are transported into a dying echo infested with the False Tree's roots feeding off its memories. They meet with the Great Goddess Dema, explaining she used her sister's power to peek into the echoes the Harvester visited to fulfill her plans of destroying all echoes created by a Mana Tree to become the universe unique source of power, eliminating the need to sacrifice a maiden each time a Tree is withering. She asks the Harvester and Baashear to come join her, but they refuse her offer altogether. Before, heading back to her Great Sanctuary she tells the protagonist to give a message to her sister, that she will come rescue her without fail in due time.

After exploring Dema & Nona's past and befriending all eight elemental spirits, the party decides to venture into the Great Sanctuary for the final showdown. They try to reason with her, telling her how her actions are affecting Nona & Diospyros, but she ultimately dismisses their plea, replying her plans were set in motions a long time ago. Diospyros retorts that deep down she hoped he would stop her since she knew what she did was not right. The Great Goddess replies her attempt to become a catalyst for change should not be stopped, then attacks the party with her dark energy. As she is about to lose the fight, she transforms into a hideous skeletal version of herself and resumes her battle for ultimate control. The echo fruits the Harvester gathered start glowing and bring heroes they met in previous adventures. Together, they manage to bring the demon queen down, reverting her back to her maiden form.

As the echoes from the Hollow Tree escape, the Great Sanctuary changes back to an empty world devoid of life. An unconscious Dema wakes up aside Diospyros, realizing she's failed to fulfill her plans. She tells her knight she feels immense guilt over what happened for she could see and hear every actions she did to all echoes she corrupted. She dreads coming back to her sister after all she's done, but Diospyros reassures her, and the two of them head back to Nona's sanctuary, who welcomes them with a big smile.

Personality[edit]

Dema is depicted as being overly rigid and sticking to traditions. Her sister is seen annoyed at her lack of openness and controlling attitude during playtime and wish she could see eye to eye sometimes. As the chosen future Goddess, she takes her role very seriously and is utterly shocked when her sister Nona takes her place instead of what was expected. Her vows to set things right and her unyielding ideals is what lured her into accepting the Great Witch Anise's help. Her stubborness made her cause the destruction of many echoes and made her even more of a recluse in the end. Fortunately, she seems to learn from her mistakes and deeply regret behaving that way.
