The Virtual Console was a software distribution platform from Nintendo. Released with the Wii in 2006, the virtual storefront was later extended to the company's other seventh- and eighth-generation platforms, including the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. It allowed players to purchase and download from a library of pre-packaged ports of games from earlier eras and hardware. As of 2022, the service is defunct on the Wii and deprecated on the Wii U and 3DS, having been supplanted on the Nintendo Switch by its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service in 2017.
