| In the 2D version, Duran starts with high Strength and Stamina, average Dexterity, and low Intellect, Spirit and Luck, making him a decent damage dealer early on. Should the player chooses to go to his light path, the swordsman will gain the unique ability to equip shields, greatly boosting his Evasion stat. He also inherits restorative magic, making his light path focusing overall on defensive strategies. His dark path enhances his natural affinity for offensive power, making him raise his strength higher than his light path. He also learns multiple elemental saber magic, making him able to penetrate enemy's defense even better.

| In the HD remake, Duran's initial class remains largely the same, having excellent Stamina, high Strength, average Luck, and low Intellect and Magic. He can now inflict even more damage by equipping offensive abilities like Counter and Break Armor. His light path is still geared toward more defensive power, as all of his light classes' locked abilities enhances his defense or increases his healing magic potency. His dark path, however, is even more offensive than his previous incarnation, as he gains several abilities capable of boosting his saber magic, while others focus instead on diminishing an enemy's defense.
