As the de facto successor to the [[PlayStation 2]], the PlayStation 3 was developed and launched amid the fierce {{wp|high-definition optical disc format war}} that dominated the mid-2000s, which pitted Sony against rival manufacturer Toshiba for control of high-capacity discs to succeed DVD-Video. The PlayStation 3 was the first and only console of this era to use Sony's own Blu-ray Disc (BD) as its main medium for games; with standard storage of up to 50 GB, both games and movies could now display in 720p widescreen definition and beyond. The system was also notable for its advanced multi-core CPU and GPU, both of which made it more powerful than many desktop PCs of its time.

Despite a relatively slow start brought on by an initial MSRP of US$600 and a lack of quality launch titles, the PlayStation 3 reached an installed base of about 80 million units over 11 years and dozens of configuration options. Of these, only four  models were compatible with the PS2's library of games, though all were compatible with the original PlayStation's software. The PlayStation 3 could also receive games and other content via [[PlayStation Network]].  As of 2022, most services for the console remain operational, albeit with caveats.
