According to magazine advertisement, your party was made up of a maxium of four active characters. You could choose up to three characters in addition to the main hero, and your three fellow companions would automatically fight for you using AI. The game wanted to include innovative ideas, such as a loyalty system determining whether characters would join your party and/or betray you. There were planned to be up to 20 recruitable characters. In the first version of the game (''Excalibur''), the game was set in Medieval Europe and the protagonist had to pull out the holy sword Excalibur to defeat a large man, becoming a knight and finally subduing him. Although Square solicited pre-orders for the game, [[Kaoru Moriyama]], a former Square employee, affirms that management canceled the ambitious project before it advanced beyond the early planning stages. == Trivia ==
Despite Square saying that ''Final Fantasy Adventure'' was a complete reboot compared to ''The Emergence of Excalibur'' , some ideas do seem to have been carried over:
* The Holy Sword of course, although it was called Excalibur and not yet Mana Sword.
* The use of [[Candy|candies]] as items.
* Monsters seem to have been recycled, most notably the [[Hydra]].
* The "Hinomaru Man" seems somewhat similar to [[Shadow Zed]].
* The name Elise (イリス in Japanese, which could also be transliterated as Iris) was reused for [[Elise|a character]] in the ''Final Fantasy Adventure'' remake ''[[Sword of Mana (game)|Sword of Mana]]''.
