==Background==
Bogard was a [[Gemma Knight]] during his youth, defeating the Vandole Empire who wrought havoc and misery to the world alongside Sir [[Cibba]]. Now, the old man lives as a recluse in his [[Bogard's Cabin|cabin]] near a waterfall. People from the nearby village of [[Topple (Adventures of Mana)|Topple]] consider him to be a stubborn woodcutter hermit who used to be a great knight.

Fulfilling a dying [[Hasim]] request for [[Fuji]] to meet with Sir Bogard, [[Sumo]] & the young maiden first meet the old knight in his cabin near Topple. Upon arrival, Bogard stays distant and repeatedly ask the adventurers to leave his house, until he sees the [[Mana Pendant|pendant]] Fuji is wearing. He then opens up as the young maiden acknowledges himself to be Sir Bogard of the Gemma Knights. The old man then explains that a long time ago, an evil organization called the Vandole Empire sought to bring the world under its control by tapping into Mana, effectively bringing an era of fear an violence. An organized resistance called the Gemma Knights stood against the imperial armies. Though far lower in numbers, the resistance eventually defeated the evildoers thanks to a maiden who filled their hearts with courage and led them to victory. This fabled lady wore the very same pendant that Fuji sports today. Bogard then adds that evil forces are at it again and that this pendant might be the key to restoring peace once again. He then entrusts his [[Mattock|mattock]] to Sumo and order them journey east of here to find a cave that leads to Wendel, telling them that Sir Cibba might remember more about the pendant's meaning than him.

Later on, after Fuji's abduction by [[Julius]] in [[Wendel]], Sumo reunites with Bogard as he exits [[Gaia Pass]]. The old knight tells the young swordsman that he needn't to apologize for letting Fuji and the pendant slip into evil hands and the Cibba told him about the entire situation. He adds that Julius' [[Airship|warship]] must be refueling at a nearby station to the north, making it a perfect opportunity to hop aboard and save the damsel in distress before they put to the skies. Bogard then joins Sumo and the newly formed duo venture inside the enemy airship near a lake. The party eventually find Fuji in a cell, quickly realizing that they cannot open the door without the key. Sumo decides to circle back to break the lone window at the opposite of the room while Bogard stands guard near the jailed maiden. As Sumo finally gets to the narrow catwalk leading to the cell window and Fuji gives him her pendant, they are interrupted by Julius who blasts the young knight with a fire spell, leaving him hanging on one hand at the deck. Sumo quickly loses grip and falls several feet into a straw roof in [[Menos (Adventures of Mana)|Menos]].

Sumo is later reunited with the old knight in [[Ish]] after failing to stop Julius from using Fuji and her pendant to reverse the sacred waterfall and enter the [[Mana Shrine]]. Both bedridden, Bogard explains to Sumo that he has been taken care by [[Sarah]] after being thrown from the airship. He feared the worst when he saw the young lad being brought in at first, but he knew Sumo would survive, as he is the [[Gemma]]'s final hope. Sumo vehemently disagrees as he wasn't able to save Fuji or [[Amanda]], calling himself a failure in the process. The argument escalates to the point of Sumo telling Bogard that he should save the world since he's a Gemma Knight before angrily storming off. The young knight is greeted outside by Bogard's caretaker Sarah, who reveals that the fall from the airship left the old Gemma Knight with crippled legs, leaving him unable to help those in need. He believed that Sumo would visit the village and save the world, but the townsfolk mistook his words as mere ramblings. She then adds that his [[Chocobo (Adventures of Mana)|Chocobo]] has nearly died trying to escort him back to the settlement and is currently being treated by the local [[The Professor|professor]]. After paying a visit to the professor and retrieving his now [[Chocobot|robotic steed]], Sumo returns to Bogard, the latter telling him that in order to thwart Julius, the young knight needs to find the holy sword [[Excalibur]]. While even Sir Bogard in unaware of its location, he directs Sumo to Sir Cibba in Wendel, as he might know of its whereabouts. The old man last words are to speak to the Professor for the quickest route to Wendel.

After Julius's Defeat, Sumo visits Bogard, Sarah, and The Professor in Ish. In Adventures of Mana, [[Motherly Figure|Fuji's Mother]] asks him to tell Bogard she loved him as he had loved her.

In the Hero's path, Bogard is seen chatting with [[Hermann|Sumo's Father]] in a flashback as young Sumo storms into the guest room alerting them of the house being surrounded by soldiers. The Dark Lord enters the premises, informing his father that he is being punished for harboring [[Mana Clan]] heretics. Bogard replies to Hermann that he is the one who burned the [[Mana Village]] and defends his friend from Dark Lords' incoming attack. He is unfortunately taken away by Granz soldiers all the while Hermann and Sumo flee the scene.

In the Heroine's path, Bogard helps Fuji escape the [[Mana Village]] during its raid by Granz Empire during a flashback. [[Elisa]], Fuji's surrogate mother, teleport both of them during an altercation with a mysterious man, later revealed to be Julius. The duo warps into Consul Hermann's residence, a friend of Bogard, who immediately take care of the girl. Sadly, the young maiden is forced to flee from the Empire surprise visit to the mansion.

Several years later, a Fuji in her late teens awakes from her nightmare with Bogard on her side. She explains that the reason she keeps having this nightmare is that she feels guilty she left that family and that boy behind. The old mentor tells her protégé that she needs to look at situations rationally, otherwise she's no better than the Dark Lord. He then adds that she must find the survivors of the Mana Clan and the best place to start with is the nearby village of [[Topple (Sword of Mana)|Topple]]. They agree to part ways for a while.

Later on, a grown-up Sumo visits [[Cascade Cottage]] and discovers a letter telling the recipient to meet him at [[Wendel (Sword of Mana)|Wendel]]. Sumo is then interrupted by Fuji who mistakes him for working with [[Granz Realm]], but the confusion quickly simmers down when both of the adventurers discover that they loath the empire. Fuji opens up the letter and a light [[Wisp|Mana spirit]] pops up, prompting Fuji to lower her guard and learning to Sumo how to use magic. Both decide to tag along for their next destination.

Sir Bogard is next seen talking with Cibba in Wendel's cathedral during which Sumo and Fuji visit. Sumo introduces him to both gentlemen, with Bogard commanding him from being alive and remembering him. The old knight apologizes to the young swordsman for ruining his day back when he brought refugees from the Mana Village in Hermann's residence. To his amazement, Sumo discovers that both Bogard and Cibba were two of the three Gemma Knights who defeated the Vandole Empire 20 years ago. This prompts the young knight to inquire about the [[Mana Sword]]'s whereabouts to Cibba so he can avenge his parents' death by beating the Dark Lord. This amuses both Bogard and Cibba who reply that one that should seek the holy sword ought to be a true hero, which angers an humiliated Sumo, who storms off the cathedral. While outside, a large shadow, who is revealed to be the Granz Real Military [[Airship]], hovers above Wendel, immediately assaulting the city. Amongst the panic, Sumo recognizes Dark Lord and his mysterious assistant Julius marching toward the cathedral. The young hero is swiftly overmatched by the overlord and his demon advisor, the latter hurling a shadowy ball of energy at him, sending him flying into the building. This blow makes the [[Moon Mirror]] previously found in the [[Marsh Cave]] shatter into pieces. Bogard tries to engage the Dark Lord into a fight, but Fuji decides to surrender herself before any more commotion is done. The group is then forced to watch helplessly as the young maiden is escorted outside.

Moments after, Sumo awakens from a dream and is informed by Bogard that Fuji is being taken hostage on the airship. The young hero curses at the fact that he failed to protect her again, but the old mentor warns him to not fall into defeatism. He suggests that they speak with Cibba back in the cathedral as he would surely find a solution. Back at the meeting place, Cibba explains that this incident probably involves Vandole since the Moor Mirror reflected its shadowy figure back when Julius stormed into the holy place. Bogard seems incredulous at first, but Cibba then adds that the enemy airship will dock at [[Westlake]], giving the group an opportunity to rescue Fuji. The old sage continues by telling Sumo to venture into [[Gaia Cave]] and gives him a Wisp to help him out on his journey. As for Bogard, Cibba entrusts him to head to Granz Castle while he does some research on Julius. The group disbands afterwards.

Bogard then climbed aboard the airship using a Granz soldier uniform as a decoy. This ruse led him to help rescue Fuji by tagging along and destroy the airship's reactor for an emergency landing. Fuji even finds an earth [[Gnome|spirit]] inside the [[Guardian]] scouting the engine room. They made it safely by landing on [[Menos Outskirts]] and decide to search for Sumo in the nearby town.

Bogard is then reunited with Sumo after his brutal fall from Granz airship in [[Menos (Sword of Mana)|Menos]]. Accompanied by Fuji, the young knight inquires his mentor about Cibba's fate, the latter assuring him that he can't be done so easily. Sumo then realizes that his pendant is missing, to which Bogard comments about a mysterious [[Amanda|girl]] running out of this house just now. The young hero decides to check on her friend Amanda to see if she might have taken his precious artifact. After touring around the village, Sumo learns that Amanda went to the [[Jadd (Sword of Mana)|City of Jadd]]. Bogard then decides to head for the city with Fuji while Sumo leaves a note to Amanda.

While visiting Jadd, Fuji and Bogard stumble on Devius Manor. Sensing a familiar magic power, the old man decide to investigate along with Fuji. Once inside, they discover from [[Genoa]], the head servant, that [[Lady Medusa]] has turned almost everyone into birds. Bogard explain to a puzzled maiden that Lady Medusa is the Mavole princess and wife of Lord Granz. There is an old superstition that says one should never utter her name in fear of being cursed. Genoa clarifies that her ladyship has been losing her strength ever since she came to the human world. Bogard theorizes that Lord Granz might have been using Mana Power to sustain her wife. As of now, Lady Medusa has lost her memory and is afflicted with despair. The head butler adds that she has no doubt retreated to the [[Dune Maze]] since it is where Lord Granz and her pledged their eternal love. If they destroy the [[Altar of Time]], then maybe she could regain her senses. Bogard and Fuji then hurries to the aformentioned place, but are stopped outside Devius Manor when they see a peculiar bird standing in front of them. Fuji recognize it to be Lester and says to follow it.

The old Gemma Knight and the young maiden Fuji are then seen rushing to the [[Altar of Time]] where an injured [[Lady Medusa]] lays unconscious after confronting Sumo and Amanda in a fight. Fuji tries to heal the [[Mavole|mavole]] lady, but she is too weak to be saved, and gives [[Lord Granz]]'s lute into Sumo's care while pleading for the adventurers to let their birds partake of her blood to let go of their curse. She dies shortly after knowing that her family is safe and sound. Devius and the Dark Lord burst into the room and teleport the lifeless body away, foiling the party's attempt to collect Lady Medusa's blood and curing Lester. While the Dark Lord urges Devius to get revenge from the Mana Clan betraying their mother once again before teleporting away, the latter assures his brother that he will them to justice by killing them at his manor. Devius then teleports Bogard out of the cave just like Stroud did moments before, effectively capturing him in his lair.

The old mentor is seen in Devius' private chambers inside a giant cage whose enchanted with magic. Bogard explains that the spell won't break until Devius himself is defeated, but considers his fate to be payback from not protecting Lady Medusa back in the Atlar of Time. He argues that should he had used Mana Power to cure her, she might have been okay. He continues by telling Sumo/Fuji that from the Dark Lord and Devius' perspective, the Mana Clan and him are enemies who hoarded the power of Mana and that he's made up his mind about not using this sacred power selfishly anymore.

Bogard is then rescued from its prison after Sumo defeat Devius. He is rejoined by Fuji and Lester, Amanda's brother, as they all reminisce before Devius Manor. The old man insists on being alone for a while so he can collect his thoughts more deeply and suggest they go all to Granz Castle without him. Fuji decides to stay behind to keep an eye on her mentor. He confides in the late Lord Granz that he was once again unable to protect Medusa and that he feels worthless and disgusted at himself. Fuji apologizes for bumping in and the two head to their next destination.

The duo eventually traverse [[Miasma Glen]], [[Cascade Cave]] and [[Mt. Illusia]], finally reaching Granz Castle and freeing Willy, a slave gladiator and member of the Mana Clan, from its cell. Fuji learns that Sumo was a gladiator here along with Willy and the latter joins the team in search of young knight.

Sumo and Lester later meet with Bogard in Lord Granz's room in Granz Castle. He is quickly joined by Fuji and Willy. The group then decides to look for clues to see if Lord Granz is still alive while Sumo and Fuji take care of Dark Lord upstairs.

After getting hit by giants tremors at Granz Castle, Sumo/Fuji recovers from his/her injuries inside a private residence in [[Ishe]] after collapsing in [[Glass Desert]], surrounded by his/her friends Fuji/Sumo, Bogard, Cibba, Lester and Willy, as well as [[Selah]] the one who found the group and nursed them back one by one. Bogard explains to Sumo/Fuji that Selah is an old friends of him and Cibba, back when they were called Gemma Knights. Selah was able to find their bodies with the aid of the birds. Just as they form a group meeting, a bird comes flying by as the sandstorm outside recedes. Cibba interprets the bird's song as a message that Julius got his hands on the Mana Pendant and that it is only a matter of time before he gets Mana Power. Sumo/Fuji then plead Cibba for letting him/her know about the Mana Sword's resting place, to which the old sage replies that the fabled weapon sleeps underneath the [[Subsea Volcano]]. Cibba warns Sumo/Fuji that the sword chooses its wielder and that the way to the volcano is a treacherous place. Sumo/Fuji then decides to journey to the Subsea Volcano with Lester/Willy while Willy/Lester joins Fuji/Sumo to the same location.

After a long an arduous journey, Sumo/Fuji and Lester/Willy finally retrieve the rusted Mana Sword back to Cibba in Ishe to have it inspected. Cibba is glad to see them and adds that the sword should gleam like the sun in the hands of a Gemma Knight. Bogard scoffs at that remark by revealing that the Gemmas fought to end with that sword and that it only shines in Granz's fairy tales. While momentarily taken aback by this realization, Sumo/Fuji theorizes that the sword is to be held within the heart, since even a tree branch can become a holy sword when held with deep conviction. Both Cibba and Bogard congratulate Sumo/Fuji for finding out the truth by himself. Cibba adds that if someone uses the Mana power to control the whole world, it's all fleeting, from which Bogard butt in to say that it is certain to say that thousands of lives will be sacrified for this sudden vision. Bogard also remarks that by the pace of things, Julus is already way ahead of them with the Mana pendant in his possession, to the point that it is impossible to stop him in due time. Cibba then suggests to use the raising [[Dime Tower]] to get to the [[Mana Sanctuary]] since its technology was used to create a bridge that led there. While it is rumored to have sank in the Glass Desert, Bogard reveals to the group that the tower was sealed by none other than Cibba himself. It is then agreed on that Willy should help Cibba break the seal on Dime Tower while Sumo and Fuji head to the [[Ruined Path]]. Bogard warns the duo to be careful since the seal protecting the Ruined Path is far stronger than the one [[Count Lee]] did on the [[Cave to Wendel]].

During the confrontation with [[Julius' Shadow]] in the Mana Shrine, the swarthy demon summons grayish apparitions bearing a striking resemblance to Sumo and Fuji's friends to reveal their deepest sins. One of them looks like Bogard and confesses that he gave his wife to the Mana Sanctuary knowing that she wouldn't return again. As the apparitions are about to attack Sumo, their curse is broken thanks to worldwide prayers from their friends. The now sane Bogard reveals to Fuji that her wife was her mother. Fuji replies that somehow she always knew of him protecting her from harm. The old Gemma Knight then takes part of a grueling battle alongside Cibba, Willy, Lord Granz and Lester to defeat Julius' Shadow while Sumo and Fuji continue deeper into the Mana Shrine to confront Julius.

Bogard is lastly seen alongside the group before the dying Mana Tree, sending his love to Fuji as she is about to transform into the new Mana Tree as both Sumo and her become the new light of hope.
