Etymology[edit]
Bishamon, Vaisravaṇa, or Kuvera is a popular deity within Buddhism, who is the patron deity of the northern direction, and a god of wealth, warriors, martial arts, and magic. Many incarnations of him exist, being known as Tamonten when in the ranks of the Four Heavenly Kings, and Jinja Taisho, a protective patron deity of desert travelers.
With the weapon's lore stating how it was the favorite weapon of Bishamon, this ties into popular folk tales originating from the Nirvana Sutra regarding Bishamon, being that of the tales of Guang'e or Milarepa:
- In the former, Guang'e who a butcher who slaughtered at least one sheep everyday until encountering Sariputra, a disciple of the Buddha, and discarding his trade, transformed his karma, becoming Vaisravaṇa. This inspired the popular Buddhist phrase "Put down the killing knife and become a Buddha."
- In the latter, Milarepa was a mild mannered everyday man until the death of his father, which spurred his greedy uncle to covet his property, spurring Milarepa to take revenge with killing magic upon his uncle's family, until the grief of the act lead him to the Dalai Lama Ouba and the master Marpa to repent for his sins by arduous penance by severe discipline and monastic labor, allowing him to transform his karma and become enlightened.
