The Nintendo DS was a family of seventh-generation handheld game systems manufactured by Nintendo from 2004 to 2014.

Background

Named for its pioneering Dual Screen display architecture, the DS was launched in 2004 as a companion to the preceding Game Boy Advance SP. Initial models had a clamshell design similar to the SP and were backward-compatible with all GBA games, but were not compatible with the original Game Boy or the Game Boy Color. The upper display was a standard backlit LCD, but the lower display was a capacitive touchscreen, the first for any dedicated gaming hardware. A stylus was included with the device. Games could either span both screens for field play, or offer an interactive panel on the lower screen while keeping the game itself confined to the upper screen. The system was also Wi-Fi-enabled, allowing for wireless local play or Internet multiplayer with Nintendo's exclusive Wi-Fi Connection service. This also allowed the system to download software from dedicated Download Station kiosks at retailers and select other venues. While local Tag Mode multiplayer will still operate on compatible networks, most if not all remote Internet services were discontinued May 2014. Services for the DSi (below) were terminated mid-2017.

In time, the DS would supplant the GBA as Nintendo's flagship handheld, with two additional models released over its lifetime. The DS Lite was a sleeker redesign of the original with a brighter backlight system, released in 2006 alongside the Wii set-top unit. The 2008 DSi was an Internet-enabled version with onboard cameras and access to a dedicated storefront for downloadable content (DSIWare). Followed quickly by larger-screen XL versions in 2009, the DSi also dropped compatibility with GBA games and a small number of DS games that used the GBA slot as expansion.
