The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a ninth-generation home video game console produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment from 2020 onward.
Background[edit]
The fifth home console in Sony's long-running family was introduced in late 2020 to compete directly with Microsoft's fourth-generation Xbox Series family and the previous-generation Nintendo Switch, thus completing the ninth generation of video game hardware. It improves upon the PlayStation 4 with its robust graphics processor and native solid-state storage, as well as a revamped controller dubbed DualSense, replacing the long-running DualShock family of gamepads.
The PS5 is available with or without a Blu-ray Disc drive, and is backward-compatible with most digital and physical games for PS4, offering enhanced performance for select titles via regular updates to the console's operating software.
