Steam (service)

Steam is a digital media distribution service and entertainment platform owned and operated by American game developer Valve Corporation.

Overview[edit]

Founded in 2003 for users of Microsoft Windows, the service allows registered users to purchase games directly from Valve and other developers for immediate play on their Steam-enabled devices without the need for cumbersome license numbers and/or physical media. Since 2010, the platform has expanded to include users of Linux, Mac, and smart devices. Once purchased, the media is bound to the player's Steam account, and is thus transferrable between enabled devices in accordance with the creators' license terms. Steam also allows players to engage with one another via multiplayer services and community message boards.

In addition to its offerings on recent devices and operating systems, the service also markets and sells a portable hybrid device known as the Steam Deck that plays the majority of PC games distributed.

User registration is free, and is mandatory to browse, purchase content, and interact with other Steam users.

Steam is the largest distributor of PC-based video games since its inception. A survey conducted in 2013 found that 75% of PC game purchases were made via Steam. As of 2023, 75% of the platform's sales were game purchases, with the remainder accounted for by microtransactions (game add-ons, in-game currency, et al.).
