The Xbox Series is the name given to a family of ninth-generation gaming consoles developed and produced by Microsoft. This family of hardware, marketed as the Xbox Series X|S, is notable as the first Xbox generation to host the Mana series.

Overview[edit]

The fourth in a line of Windows-derived gaming hardware, the Xbox Series was introduced in late 2020, immediately supplanting 2013's Xbox One family. Like its direct predecessor, the Xbox Series is built on gaming-grade PC components and has the capability of rendering graphics in up to full 4K "Ultra HD" resolution at up to 60 frames per second (fps) with High Dynamic Range (HDR) color balancing technology. The console is also backward-compatible with many titles from all three previous Xbox families through regular software updates, some with additional enhancements and upgrades effective exclusively on Xbox Series hardware. Online multiplayer and digital purchase options are handled via the eponymous Xbox network that includes Xbox Live. Some games and services may require a paid Gold membership and/or a Game Pass subscription. The family competes most closely with Sony's PlayStation 5.

Xbox Series consoles are available in a basic S model, for digital games only, and without some performance-boosting upgrades nor a Blu-ray disc drive; and a high-tier X model with all features built in.
