Soul guard

Soul guards play an important role in Visions of Mana. As a title, it is conferred upon a warrior who will fight to defend the eight alms on their pilgrimage to the Mana Tree, keeping them safe from harm until they reach their destination to be offered to the holy arbor. Certain of their line also possess the extremely rare ability to convert monster souls into the crystals known as corestones, which was originally intended to expedite the return of essential energy to the Tree.

A soul guard's role parallels that of an anointed Mana Knight, whose job is to keep the Goddess of Mana Herself from harm. As Fa'Diel became Qi'Diel, however, the hero Daelophos was consumed by grief and rage over the sudden death of his betrothed Cerulia and in turn sought revenge upon the Goddess. The Mana Knight Khoda fought valiantly to protect the Goddess and was killed, though he retained the power to create corestones from souls, which he would then present to the Mana Tree to energize a seal placed on Daelophos and restrain the effects of a curse upon the entire world. Thus, the traditions of soul guards and alms were born; and since that time, many soul guards have been christened in the village of Tianeea, where a pilgrimage begins every four years to reinvigorate the Tree and its elemental energy to keep the seal intact.
