Corestone
Corestones are items collected by defeating monsters in Visions of Mana. Their main use is to be traded for ability seeds.
Overview[edit]
Corestones are described as the crystallized essence of a being's life. Normally, as the life of a living creature runs its course, it returns to the Mana Tree to be born as a new being. However, the situation with Qi'Diel and Daelophos required a means to extract souls by brute force so as to maintain the Mana Tree's hold on the tyrant.
Val possesses the unique ability of crystallizing monster souls upon defeat called "corestones". While not having any particular power of their own, corestones can be exchanged by visiting Niccolo's Emporium for ability seeds, which in turn grant powers to use in battle or on the field. Defeating an enemy is a surefire way to obtain is corresponding corestone.
There are three types of corestones depending on the enemy's rarity: regular monsters, nemeses, and bosses. Common enemies yield small blue crystals while nemeses drop medium-sized green ones and bosses grant large red corestones. Nemeses and bosses typically yield better & stronger ability seeds than regular enemies, but cannot be collected more than once. Excess or unwanted corestones can be traded for Niccolo coins.
Story[edit]
Upon starting their journey to the Mana Tree, Val and Hinna stumble on a pair of Rabites obstructing their path early on the Charred Passage. Val proceeds to take care of them, and recieve its first corestone in the process, with the Alm of Fire commenting on his strange ability.
Eoren later manipulates the couple to gain the Soul Guard's power to turn enemies into crystals by making them believe he can put a stop to the cycle of Alm sacrifice, allowing Val and Hinna the freedom to stay together as long as they please. He lures them to a small islet called Reignus Shrine and perfoms a magic ritual intended to transfer Val's ability to him, turning Hinna into a corestone in the process. He steals her crystallized core before the Soul Guard can do anything.
The party later finds Eoren at the Sanctuary Entrance where he explains he wanted to use Val's ability and Hinna's corestone to set the legendary blade free of its rocky pedestal and undo the petrification curse on his beloved Lyza in Gudju. By doing so, he inadvertently free Daelophos, the former champion of the Goddess now turned vengeful and ruthless. The party tries to fight back but is quickly overpowered and has now other choice but to head back to the Deade Cliffs.
After defeating the benevodons of darkness and light, the convoy agrees to seek an audience with the Mana Goddess. They meet with Khoda inside the Sanctuary of Mana who reveals to be Val's ancestor and who has the same ability to turn beings into corestones. In fact, he was the one tasked of turning Alm sacrifices into ones as offerings to the Mana Tree so the Goddess can in turn slowly regain her powers during her deep slumber. Much as the Mana Knights of old, this power was passed down through generations from Khoda to Val.
