Palamena is one of the five playable heroes in Visions of Mana.

Background[edit]

“Palamena is the young Queen of Illystana, Capital of the Deep. Since the death of her father, she succeeded the throne. Since then, Palamena has been navigating her way through Illystana's societal expectations and turbulent politics while also caring for Iain, her young brother.”

Palamena is the newest queen of Illystana, an inter-coastal nation-state of the Manadore Continent dominated by humanoids with rodent-like traits, including tails of varied colors and styles. Her people have long worshipped the Water Elemental Undine; and until Palamena took the throne, Illystana experienced a long period of class warfare and internal struggle. To date, Palamena has been a firm, kind, and just ruler, albeit one with a rebellious streak about her at times. Still, her court of magistrates is not completely confident in her ability to rule, as one in particular, the devious Passar, eagerly awaits his chance at power should Palamena err or leave the throne. Though she carries herself with all the grace and dignity of her station, she is still an older sister with many a worry for her younger brother, Iain, who is next in line to the throne when he comes of age.

History[edit]

Palamena spent her youth studying in Log'grattzo under the direction of its head curator Aesh; but as this was not expected of the royal line of Illystana, Palamena often dressed as if she were a man and operated under the nom de guerre Pamael. She also posed as a vigilante thief named Paem in order to gain a better perspective on her subjects. However, she was terrible at hiding her true identity; and even then, those she helped still participated in the ruse. It was also during this time that Palamena made a promise to her brother Iain that the two would rule the kingdom together. She also befriended the traveling merchant Niccolo, who in turn became a trusted advisor within her court.

Prior to the events of the story, Palamena was blessed by Undine and the Faerie as the Alm of Water. As Palamena knew she would have to abdicate her throne, she asked the Faerie not to tell anyone until the time was right. Meanwhile, her chief magistrate Passar was planning to usurp the throne in any way he could.

When Val and his convoy arrived to find the Alm of Water, Palamena had fled her palace shortly before she was due to perform a blessing ceremony for the current convoy. Again posing as a man, she was desperate to hide the fact that she was the alm. This, however, did not fool Morley, whom she had run into, injuring herself in the process.

On the night of the ceremony, Palamena is forced to expose her status, and Passar grills her before moving forward with his plans to take her place as King. He manufactures a water crisis, frames Niccolo for it, and lures the convoy to the Luka Ruins just east of the city. There, Passar summons the Fullmetal Hugger to destroy them. He is unsuccessful, as the convoy vanquishes the giant crab and frees Undine from its grasp, purifying the water of the region once more. Passar is furious, but still manages to escape before he can face judgment.

Now free to focus on the pilgrimage and her duties as an alm, Palamena joins the convoy; and with Niccolo's help, Iain assumes the throne of Illystana.
