Gnome is one of the eight Mana Spirits in the Mana series. Resembling the mythical humanoid from Germanic folklore, Gnome typically represents the element of earth wherever he appears; and as such, he is often found in areas associated with dirt, stone, and precious gems hewn from earth. Gnome first appears in Secret of Mana.

Gnome's powers generally include manipulation of dirt and stone to create earthquakes, mudslides, and rockfalls; as well as the ability to summon gem fragments as razor-sharp projectiles to bombard enemies. He can also raise or lower defensive walls and enchant weapons with the power of earth. Infrequently, he summons plant life to strangle or impede his opponents.

Gnome is typically depicted as a miniature gnome with a green cap and a bushy brown beard topped with a mustache. He can sometimes appear with one or two small mallets in his hands. While generally as amiable as the other elementals, Gnome's demeanor varies between games, from blunt and somewhat rude to jovial and laid back.

History[edit]

Secret of Mana[edit]

Gnome is the second elemental to join the party, first met by the party on the lowermost level of the Underground Palace. Shocked that the party would find him as the Empire is also after him, Gnome at first refuses to join them; and he is soon after scared away by a rampaging Fire Gigas. After the giant's defeat, Randi is able to advance to the palace dais to seal the Mana Seed of Earth. Grateful for his freedom, Gnome offers his aid, though he mocks Popoi and gets a crush on Primm to the latter's disgust.

To Primm is granted Defender, Stone Saber and Speed Up; and to Popoi, Gem Missile, Earth Slide, and Slow Down.

Trials of Mana[edit]

As in the previous game, Gnome is the second elemental to join the party. He resides in the Dwarf Tunnels below Dwarf Village, in the caverns of Stonesplit Gap. Watts becomes concerned when the dwarfs' patron spirit suddenly goes missing and takes batches of the explosive nitromyte with him to help in his search. The heroes follow Watts through the cave maze as it rumbles and shakes, and find him near an old refractive crystal vein. Another quake rocks the area, forcing Watts to take cover. The party then confronts a Jewel Eater and fells it, releasing Gnome, whom it caught while he was napping. After a brief chat with Faerie, Gnome lends himself to the heroes' cause. He later clears the way to the Seaside Cavern on Beuca Island when it is blocked off by a rockfall.

Moves learned or enhanced include Diamond Shards, Stone Saber, Protection, Impediment (2D version only), Earthquake, Stone Cloud and Rockfall.

Dawn of Mana[edit]

“In need of my services, are ye? The power of earth can bring things together!”
Gnome

Introduced as the narrator of the story, Gnome is once more the second spirit to join the heroes, found in Chapter 1. His power effectively transforms Keldric into a magnet, allowing him to pull loose objects and foes toward himself.

Gnome is voiced with a light Gaelic accent.

Heroes of Mana[edit]

“The spirit who controls the power of the earth. A caring old man with tidbits of wisdom always at the ready. Seems most concerned about the future of the world.”
Notebook
