- “We plants absorb the Mana energy of Fa'Diel to make air. We circulate the Mana, source of all things. We supply seeds with Mana energy so they can grow.”
- —Treant - Legend of Mana
Treant, also known as Trent, is a recurring character in the Mana series.
Background[edit]
Treant takes the appearance of a large deciduous sentient tree adorned with a large face topped with a long nose. Starting with Children of Mana he is frequently paired with Gaia as both wise supernatural beings providing assistance to the protagonist. He is sometimes depicted as the slightly more upbeat and optimistic spirit compared to Gaia. In games where he is less important to the scenario, he provides players with produce should they bring them Seeds.
History[edit]
Legend of Mana[edit]
- “The ancient tree that lives in the backyard at Home. He swallows seeds to produce fruits and vegetables on his branches.”
- —In-game Encyclopedia
Treant makes his debut in Legend of Mana where he is found in the protagonist's Orchard. In The Mana Orchard quest, the player must defeat invasive Lullabuds to save the elder spirit. Treant thanks the protagonist by telling them he can grow Produce by lending him Seeds should they let the tree spirit absorb Mana through its roots.

Trent shows up in the orchard inside the Hot House, where the hero can plant two seeds in exchange of a produce. Depending on the day and the combinations of seed given to Trent, the produce will differ.
Children of Mana[edit]
Treant appears in spirit form before the protagonist after Galem is defeated deep within Star Lake, where he tells them that the recent force welling up out of control isn't coming from Mavolia, but from Mana itself. This surge could result in the whole world being destroyed and thus the player must find out how to quell each column of light sprouting all over Fa'Diel. He then entrusts the player an enchanted branch before disappearing.
Treant's Branch is used to remove the sandstorm blocking access to the Fiery Sands.
Gaia's Stone in combination with Treant's Branch are able to neutralize the Ice Citadel's barrier and both spirits use their power to suppress the Mana Surge coming to the kingdom of Wendel, tharthing the evildoer's plans to raise an indestuctible Mana tempest.
Gaia and Treant return once again at Mana Village after rescuing Tess from Illusia Ruins. They instruct the player on the Mana Lord's whereabouts and guide them deep under the roots of the Mana Tree to the Path of Life.
Both spirits are seen welcoming the hero and Tess after defeating the Scion of Mana, ushering the dawn of Mana's Progeny. They fade away along with Illusia Isle and the Benevodons.
Dawn of Mana[edit]
Long ago, the Door to Mavolia was opened by a Tree Maiden named Anise, unleashing dark energy throughout the world of Fa'Diel. After saving the world from the brink of chaos with the Sword of Mana, the holy blade was sealed deep within a Tree spirit, preventing anyone from opening the evil portal again and ensuring everlasting peace.
When Treant appears at the end of Chapter 2, he explains to Ritzia, Keldric and Chobee that the Mana Tree has absorbed negative energy from ages and gave birth to the Echoes of destruction. While Treant was able to contain the echoes along with the fabled weapon, meeting Ritiza made the darkness inside him surge, turning him into Grim Treant. Keldric has no choice but to destroy the old tree spirit, momentarily turning him back into his old self. With his dying words, he tells Keldric and Faye to venture to Mortmont to meet with the Guardian Beast.
Treant reappears along with Gaia in spirit form to Faye a year after a manipulated Ritzia opened the Door to Mavolia. The Spirit Child hears the voices of Trent and Gaia in her head, advising her to abandon her mission since humans have brought this curse on themselves. The little sprite replies she still wants to fight on Keldy's side, which brings joy to both guardians. They entrust their protection and guidance to Faye in her mission to save the world. They later console Keldric after he defeats his corrupted best friend Lekius atop the hanging gardens of Jadd Castle.
Both Treant and Gaia's spirits come back again during the final confrontation with Anise as the young hero explore the tortuous hallways of the Nethermanse, cheering him one last time.
Heroes of Mana[edit]
- “A botanical lifeform that produces Treant's berries. It is told that a matrix Treant exists somewhere in the world, but it is as yet unconfirmed.”
- —Notebook
According to Yurchael, Treant is rooted all over the world along with Gaia to protect the land. The tree spirit's power is crystallized in its berries.
Treant appears as a ressource deposit on each mission maps. The player can assign gathering units to harvest Treant's Berries from it to allow units to be created inside the ship. Once the source is depleted of its resources, the tree withers and cannot be used until the mission ends.
