The party battling the Mana Beast in Secret of Mana HD

The term Final boss refers to the last boss fought during the game's main quest. The ending cutscene and the game's credits will play after its defeat. In some installments, players can gain access to post-game content after the credits by selecting the completed save file.

The common theme shared by most final bosses is to destroy the Mana Tree and the Mana Goddess and attain godhood by doing so. Using the aforementioned powers could lead them to rule the world or reduce it to a state of nothingness. Another, more recent recurring theme is making the antagonist harboring a personal vendetta against the Goddess. The villain is generally defeated by the hero wielding the Mana Sword, the resulting battle often ending up destroying the holy tree. The next chosen maiden from the Mana Clan is appointed to become the next goddess until she runs out of Mana power again. This neverending cycle is part of the clan's tradition.
