The ??? Seed, informally known as the Class-changing Seed, is a consumable item in Trials of Mana.

History

Trials of Mana

The ??? seed is a rare drop from specific enemies encountered after the first visit to the Sanctuary of Mana (i.e. after starting Chapter V in the HD remake). When planted in a Magic Pot, it sprouts one of six class-change items for the cast of the current quest:

Alternatively, the seed restores 50 HP^2D/100 HP^3D to all party members as an item.

Functionality

This seed is responsible for granting the party a special category of items known as "class items" (e.g. Cursed Bottle for Charlotte's Dark-Dark class, Warlock). These items allow the party to go beyond their second class. There is a catch to this; if the player wants to evolve the party further, the party must also be at Level 38 with the class item in hand. ??? Seeds must be planted at an Inn, and the class items that are received from the planting depend on the characters in the party, e.g., a Charlotte-Kevin-Angela party would give any two of the four bottles, auras, or books, depending on which path was chosen for the first class change. These class items can also be used in battle for secondary effects. However, due to a programming oversight, no item will be issued twice in a row if the player already has class items in inventory; thus, it may be best to defer class changes until all six class items are made available.

Like any of the seeds within Trials of Mana, the ??? Seeds restore 50 HP if they are consumed, for one character only.

In the HD remake, for every dungeon where a Benevodon can be found in Chapter V, one ??? Seed can be found in a treasure chest near the boss's lair. Additionally, those six seeds recieved in Benevodon dungeons are programmed to yield the six class-changing items needed for each six possible class 3 changes.

Seeds in the HD remake are hard coded on pickup and cannot be changed when reloading. Two factors are recorded: party position and light vs dark. If a ??? would produce an Ash Bottle for Enchantress Charlotte as main character, it would also produce a Knight Tag for Knight Duran as main character in New Game Plus.

Class 1 is always considered light for purposes of determining which two Class 3 items can spawn. If a character is already in Class 4, then the Class 3 alignment is checked. For example, a Starlancer-Metorite Riesz counts as dark and will now grant Dragoon Bands and Gleipnirs.
