Charlotte is one of the six protagonists in Trials of Mana.
Background[edit]
Charlotte is the granddaughter of the Priest of Light of Holy City Wendel. She was conceived in a forbidden union between an elf mother and a Wendellan cleric, souring the tensions between Humans and Elves of Dior. Both the Priest of Light and the Elfin Elder wouldn't consent to their union, fearing that this would shorten their lifespan. As her parents died shortly after having her, the Priest of Light took it upon himself to raise the half-elf inside the Temple of Light.
History[edit]
Trials of Mana[edit]
- “HALF-ELF YOUNG MAIDEN OF HOLY CITY WENDEL -- Charlotte is the granddaughter of Wendel's Priest of Light. She looks much younger than she is thanks to the elfin blood in her veins. Perhaps because of this, she has always been coddled by the people who raised her in the temple. Charlotte's bright and outgoing personality can be both an asset and a hindrance. Though curious, she's superstitious and a bit of a scaredy-cat.”

A strange light is seen hovering above the Astoria lake, prompting the Priest of Light to send Heath, a young cleric, to scout the area for answers. Charlotte, overhearing the conversation, fears the worst for her beloved friend and tries to catch up to him. Unfortunately, the cleric is long gone from the Temple of Light and the young half-elf is forbidden to leave the palace unattended. Together with another friend, she hops on a Springstepper to escape her gilded prison, only to find Heath attacked by invading Beastmen in the Rabite Forest. While it seems the opponents are no match for the cleric's light magic, Heath is quickly defeated and captured by a mysterious jester, leaving a stunned and distraught Charlotte no choice but to return to Wendel all alone.
Charlotte shares many story elements with Kevin, a half-beastman of Ferolia, the nation trying to invade Wendel. If either of them is chosen as the main protagonist, the main villain will be the Masked Mage and the last dungeon will be the Mirage Palace. After completing her quest, Charlotte returns to His Eminence in the Temple of Light, learning that Heath has sacrificed himself to cure the Priest of Light's illness while still possessed by evil. While still grieving her departed friend, she is astonished to see him walking toward her. It turns out the Mana Goddess use her last power to revive him, freeing the cleric from a dark demise.
Circle of Mana[edit]
Charlotte makes a cameo appearance in the online game, along with several Trials of Mana characters. She appears in 31 sets of cards.

General information[edit]
Physical appearance[edit]
Being half-elf, Charlotte is of a height much shorter than most humans, and ages much more slowly than humans do. She therefore carries the appearance of a six-year-old girl, though she is aged 15. She has long, wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. In her starting Cleric class, Charlotte wears a blue jumper adorned with several patterns in gold leaf, complemented by a red cap with two tails as well as matching boots. She wields various flails and nunchaku as weapons.
Personality[edit]
At surface level, Charlotte projects confidence in herself as well as in her relationships with Heath and her grandfather. Her effervescent personality and seemingly youthful appearance have earned her admiration from many within the temple she calls home. Though she is not fond of being treated as a child. she exhibits a childlike curiosity for the world beyond the temple.
Beneath this façade, however, is a girl with many insecurities. She looks to Heath as a brother of sorts, having lost her parents at a very young age. She cares deeply for Heath as well as for her grandfather, and so will go to any lengths necessary to see them safe from harm. She is also inclined toward intense emotions, particularly sadness, upon seeing or hearing any news of those close to her, as evidenced by that she cries a lot. Even tears of joy are prolonged episodes.
In the official English translation, Charlotte is characterized with both rhotacism and lambdacism, therefore both L's and R's are mostly replaced by W's in her text. The fan translation, while much easier to read through, also gave her two different quirks: first, that she had an s-to-sh shift, and second, a habit of referring to herself in the third person.
Profile and statistics[edit]
In the 2D version, Charlotte boasts high Spirit, Intellect, and Luck, but low Strength, Dexterity, and Stamina. Being naturally oriented toward support and healing, she is one of the only two characters beside Angela to learn moves in her default class. Her light class further solidifies her support role by giving her Elemental sabers, with only one or two offensive light magic. Taking her dark path makes her more of an offensive spellcaster, as she can now summon monsters to help her defeat enemies.
In the HD version, the young half-elf has been rebalanced and now has average to mediocre stats in Strength, Stamina, Intellect, and Luck, with only her Spirit being way above average. In her dafault class, she can inherit multiple abilites centered about healing, often enhancing her CS gauge or other stats. Her light classes focuses on giving out abilities that boosts her healing power and MP cost, while her dark classes target her ability to imperil enemies' stats and cause status effects.

Charlotte comes to wield flail weapons, be it from maces and ball and chains, to simple linked rods and staves. As Charlotte progresses in her classes, Priestess classes come bear flails to be rooted in holy and anointed origin, symbolic of their use in both observance and armament, while Enchantress classes come to bear flails with more occultish and sinister features, almost as charms and fetishes to attract and draw upon netherworldly power with.

Trivia[edit]
- Charlotte is unique in that she can join the party as the third character before the first boss, the Fullmetal Hugger, making the battle considerably easier.
- Her use of chained flails and maces, and having story and class themes revolving around the clerical and faith may be a nod to Castlevania, where their stories often revolve around the Belmont Clan of vampire hunters and their eternal feud between the dark forces of Dracula.
- In the 3D remake, the tassels on Charlotte's cap change with her class:
- Priestess: Full moons
- High Cleric: Golden diamonds with iconography
- Sage: Teal tassels
- Enchantress: Crescent moons
- Necromancer: White diamonds
- Warlock: Horseshoe charms
- Priestess: Full moons
