The Motherly Figure, also known as Fuji's Mother, is a character in Final Fantasy Adventure and its direct remake Adventures of Mana. She is called the Heroine's Mother in Sword of Mana.

Background[edit]

A young woman once traveled the world with Bogard and Cibba to thwart Vandole's plot to seize the Mana Tree. Unbeknownst to many, she was also of the line of Mana. While Vandole was stopped in his tracks, the Mana Tree perished and the young woman transformed herself into a new Gemma. In the present day, she is an avatar of the current Mana Tree.

History[edit]

Final Fantasy Adventure & Adventures of Mana[edit]

Prior to the events of the game, the maiden from the Mana clan helped the Gemma Knights during their struggle against the Vandole Empire by imbuing them with courage, guiding them to victory. She then used the pendant she wore to seal the Mana Tree away from evil atop Mt. Illusia. She eventually fell in love with one Gemma Knight named Bogard leading to the two of them to consummate their union. The war unfortunately led to the Tree of Mana, source of all life, to be destroyed by the Empire. Being the last of the seeds of Mana, she vowed to protect this land just like her predecessor and transformed into a new holy tree deep within the Temple of Mana, and watched over the world. Before committing to her duty, she gave her heirloom pendant to her infant daughter and took her to live under the care of other Mana clan members.

The Motherly Figure appeared in spirit before Fuji inside Wendel Cathedral, entrusting her child with the burden of the Mana clan to join the Gemma Knights and to never let the Dark Lord succeed in his devious plans to seize her pendant.

She then appears before Sumo inside the Mana Shrine, informing him that he has become a true Gemma Knight and has earned the right to wield the holy sword Excalibur to thwart Julius's dark plot once and for all. She then reappears one last time after the final confrontation to reassure Fuji bemoaning the Mana Tree's destruction, since a new sapling can be born in its place. As she did herself before, Fuji can become the Mana Tree and restore peace onto the land. That decision, however, must come from her own volition. As her daughter accepts her fate and reaches her mother's side to follow her footsteps, the dying spirit of the Mana Tree asks of Sumo one last request on her behalf: to deliver a message to Bogard that his love for her was returned in kind.
