Opening Scene

'Tis a tale of long ago, when the Mana Tree was newly born. Illusia Isle floated the middle of a sea in the center of the world. Above it towered the great Mana Tree. I'm sure you've heard many stories about the Mana Tree and the Sword of Mana. The story you're about to hear tells of the only time the holy sword ever dared to defy Mana. This is how it all began…

FERRIK'S OPENING GAMBIT

(Ferrik is speaking to Moti inside his house after his sword training.)

Moti: That will be all for today.

Ferrik: Moti, could you teach me more often? I want to train more so I can get better fast!

Moti: Hahaha. Those fiery eyes... They look just like your father's.

Ferrik: Oh?

Moti: Your father was a captain in the Holy Infantry of Wendel. He was a fearless swordsman–

Ferrik: That's right. And I want to be a swordsman just like him. That's why I need more training!

Moti: There's no need for impatience. In the catalcysm ten years ago, monsters swarmed the land. The world today is very different.

Ferrik: Yeah, but–

Moti: Train to hard and you'll injure yourself. No more lessons for today.

Ferrik: Fine. I guess I'll go see what Tess is up to.

Moti: Wait just a moment. It's almost time for Tess to go and offer prayers at the Tree of Mana. You mustn't keep her from her duties.

Ferrik: Prayer? There must be no harm in skipping them now and then.

Moti: The prayers to the Mana Tree are a sacred ritual to give thanks to the Mana goddess. Skipping them is not an option.

Ferrik: Well, if you put it like that...

Moti: Do not bother Tess. Understand?

Ferrik: All right. I won't. Well, I'll see you next time! Bye, Moti!

(Ferrik joins Tess near the village's central door.)

Ferrik: Hello, Tess.

Tess: Oh, hi, Ferrik.

Ferrik: Isn't time for you to go and pray soon?

Tess: Yes, I was just about to leave.

Ferrik: Doing more research today?

Tess: Yes. I've noticed more troubling things lately...

Ferrik: Like what?

Tess: Well, maybe it's just my imagination...but something strange is going on with the plants and animals. They seem restless, almost as if they're afraid of something.

Ferrik: Really... I can't really tell, but I hope it's nothing.

Tess: Me too... Oh, yeah. would you mind taking this to Moti for me?

Ferrik: To Moti? Why don't you–

Tess: I'm going to be late for prayers. Please? Pretty please?

Ferrik: You don't take no for an answer, do you?

Tess: Tell him they're the notes he wanted on abnormal plant growth. He'll know what you mean.

~Received Tess's Notes from Tess.~

Ferrik: Okay, I'll make sure he gets them.

Tess: Thanks! I'll see you later!

(Tess leave for the Mana Tower while Ferrik heads to see Moti.)

Moti: Ferrik, is something the matter?

Ferrik: Just delivering notes from Tess. Something about plants.

Moti: Oh, very good. Thank you, Ferrik.

Ferrik: See you, Moti.

(As Ferrik turns to leave, Watts enters.)

Watts: Anybody home?

Moti: Watts! Good to see you.

Watts: Ah, Moti.

Moti: It's been a while. How are you doing?

Watts: Can't complain. Ye're lookin' mighty good yerself.

Moti: As good as I can be, thank you.

Watts: Hm? Is that ye, Ferrik? Ye were just a bairn when I last saw ye. How ye've grown!

Moti: Really? I've gotten better with the sword, too!

Watts: And yer head's grown too, it has!

Moti: At any rate, this is a pleasant surprise... A visit from the king of the mines himself!

Watts: Well there's something that worries me a wee.

Moti: What's the matter?

Watts: Have a look at this.

(Watts places a red crystal on the table.)

Moti: What is it?

Watts: A geode. It's sort of a gem, if ye will. One of my lads got it from somewhere. But this is no ordinary stone, mind ye.

Moti: What do you mean?

Watts: It's got uncanny powers, it does. By Professor Bomb's way of it, it can alter the essence of any living thing.

Moti: Alter living things? Professor Bomb said that?

Watts: Aye.

Moti: Then could it be... The evil spirits... The power of Mavolia...

Ferrik: Evil spirits? Power of Mavolia? Not good! But weren't they contained ten years ago?

Watts: Aye, indeed they were. The gates to Mavolia were sealed shut ten years ago by the Mana goddess herself.

Moti: Then why is this happening?

Watts: I don't know. That's why I'm here. I'm thinking there might be something strange happening here on Illusia.

Moti: I see... Well, something about the Mana Tree has caught my attention rencently...

Watts: And what might that be?

(An earthquake is felt.)

Watts: By criffins! An earthquake!

(Pete barges into Moti's place.)

Pete: Come quick! It's the stone!

Moti: What's wrong with the stone?

Pete: Please, just come and see! Hurry!

Moti: Ferrik, go on ahead. I'll be there shortly.

(Ferrik, Moti & Watts, along with several other villagers are gathered around the stone.)

Watts: What in the name of the goddess...

(The stone glows for a moment, then a strong light shines, leaving the stong full of cracks.)

Moti: The stone has cracked! But how?

Watts: And what the devil was that white light?

(Nana runs toward the villagers.)

Nana: Help! the Mana Tower!

Moti: What is it?

Nana: The tower... It was swallowed by a white light!

Watts: A white light, ye say?

Nana: I...I got scared and ran back here. But Tess is still there! She's inside!

Moti: Is she all right?

Nana: I was late for prayers, so Tess went ahead alone.

Ferrik: I'll get her out of there!

Watts: Hold on, Ferrik! Take this with ye. It's one of Professor Bomb's inventions: the gem frame! Ye can use it to harness the latent powers hidden within gems. Select "Gems" from the menu on the bottom screen, and then insert gems into the frame. If ye want to know more, head to the Silver Mermaid and ask Professor Bomb's lads. They should be able to help ye.

~Received Gem Frame from Watts.~

~Received Crystal of Strength from Watts.~

Moti: This may be familiar territory, but you must start alert. Something is clearly amiss. You won't have the luxury of changing you equipment during battle. So prepare yourself well before heading to the tower. And should you ever feel your life is in danger, use this. It's a magic rope that will return you here instantly, even from the deepest cavern.

~Received Magic Rope from Moti.~

Ferrik: Thanks, both of you.

Watts: Be careful, my lad.

Ferrik: Of course!

(As Ferrik is about to leave the village, a voice is heard.)

Voice: Wait...

(The eight Mana spirits appear behind Ferrik.)

Ferrik: Hm?

Gnome: You're heading to the Mana Tower, are you not?

Ferrik: That's right.

Dryad: A turbulent force surrounds the tower. It's dangerous.

Ferrik: But Tess is still inside!

Undine: So you're diving in all alone? Don't be so reckless!

Ferrik: But someone has to get her out of there!

Salamander: Now, now. Calm down.

Shade: Yes. It's always darkest before the dawn.

Wisp: Ferrik, we're here to offer you our help.

Ferrik: Huh?

Luna: We can't just stand back and watch while Tess is in danger.

Ferrik: Really?

Jinn: You can have one of us whisk along with you.

[Mana spirit selection]

Salamander: All right, [Player]! Let's burn!

Wisp: Let the light guide you, [Player]!

Shade: Embrace the darkness, [Player]!

Ferrik: Thanks!

[Selected Mana spirit dialogue]

Ferrik: All right!

(Ferrik heads to the Mana Tower.)

TAMBER'S OPENING GAMBIT

(Tamber enters Mana Village, Granny Hannah waiting for her.)

Granny Hannah: Ah, you're back, Tamber.

Tamber: Granny Hannah! You've been waiting here for me?

Granny Hannah: Well, I did ask you to go into the woods for me, after all. I'm so sorry.

Tamber: Don't mention it! It was the perfect morning walk.

Granny Hannah: I'm sure it was, but–

Tamber: Besides, you're alway taking good care of me. This is the least I can do. Here, these are the herbs you wanted.

Granny Hannah: Oh, thank you. They should help soothe my old wounds.

Tamber: From the cataclysm ten years ago?

Granny Hannah: Yes, when a beast attacked me. The pain still comes back from time to time.

Tamber: If they start hurting again, you let me know. I need you here for a long time to come. I want you to live the long life my parents couldn't.

Granny Hannah: You're so kind, dear. Say, why don't you come to my place for some tea?

Tamber: I'm sorry, Granny. I have to go see Tess.

Granny Hannah: Tess?

Tamber: She asked me to gather some plants for her research. I have to deliver them to her.

Granny Hannah: Wait just a minute, there. It's almost time for Tess to go and offer prayers at the Tree of Mana.

Tamber: Oh, right...

Granny Hannah: The prayers to the Mana Tree are a sacred ritual to give thanks to the Mana goddess. You musn't get in her way.

Tamber: I know, I won't get in her way. I'll see you later, Granny!

Granny Hannah: Thank you for the herbs, dear.

(Tamber joins Tess near the village's central stone.)

Tamber: Hi, Tess.

Tess: Oh, hi, Tamber.

Tamber: I've brought you one of the plants you wanted.

Tess: Sorry you have to do this all the time. I'd go myself, but...

Tamber: Don't worry about it. I'm better at this kind of thing anyway. You just concentrate on your Mana studies.

Tess: Thanks, Tamber.

Tamber: Doing more research today?

Tess: Yes. I've noticed some troubling things lately...

Tamber: Like what?

Tess: Well, maybe it's just my imagination...but something strange is going on with the plants and animals. They seem restless, almost as if they're afraid of something.

Tamber: Really... that doesn't sound good.

Tess: Me too... Oh, yeah. would you mind taking this to Moti for me?

WANDERER'S OPENING GAMBIT

(Wanderer is speaking with Millionaire in his store.)

Wanderer: I've taken everything to the port storage, as you requested.

Millionaire: That's it for today. Good work!

Wanderer: Whew... you certainly know how to treat a niccolo hard.

Millionaire: If you don't work, you shan't eat! You should be grateful that I'm giving you work.

Wanderer: I am. You've always taken good care of me through thick and thin.

Millionaire: We've both gone through a lot since we've lost everything in the catalysm ten years ago...

Wanderer: We certainly have.

Millionaire: Maybe it's time you stop your wandering and just settled down on this island. What do you say?

Wanderer: I'll give it some thought. I do like this place...

Millionaire: Any plans for tonight? Can you stay for dinner?

Wanderer: Actually, I have to go see Tess.

Millionaire: Tess?

Wanderer: I found a pretty seashell at the port. I want to give it to her.

Millionaire: Wait a minute. Tess should be on her way to go offer her prayers.

Wanderer: Prayers?

Millionaire: The prayer to the Mana Tree are a sacred ritual to give thanks to the Mana goddess, so don't bother her.

Wanderer: I won't bother her. I'm just giving her a seashell. I'll see you soon!

Millionaire: Don't be late for work tomorrow!

(Wanderer joins Tess near the village's central stone.)

Wanderer: Hello, Tess.

Tess: Oh, hi, Wanderer.

Wanderer: Here's a gift for you.

Tess: My, what a lovely seashell! Thank you so much.

Wanderer: Doing more research today?

Tess: Yes. I've noticed some troubling things lately...

Wanderer: Like what?

Tess: Well, maybe it's just my imagination...but something strange is going on with the plants and animals. They seem restless, almost as if they're afraid of something.

Wanderer: Really... That doesnt' sound really pleasant.

Tess: No... Um, Wanderer? I need to ask you a favor... Could you take this to Moti for me?

Wanderer: To Moti? I don't mind, but–

Tess: I'm going to be late for prayers. Please?

Wanderer: I could never say no to you, Tess.

Tess: Tell him they're the notes he wanted on abnormal plant growth. He'll know what you mean. I really appreciate it!

Wanderer: And what of it? I like it here. It's rather comfy.

Watts: Comfy, eh?

Moti: At any rate, this is a pleasant surprise... A visit from the king of the mines himself!

The Mana Tower

(The player reaches the Mana Tower, who is engulfed in light.)

Player: Is this the Mana Tower? What happened here? It looks completely different!

(The player enters the Mana Tower.)

Player: What's going on?

Mana Spirit: The force covering the tower is wrenching the fabric of space.

Player: I can't let anything happen to Tess. I've got to hurry! / I'm really worried about Tess. Let's hurry!

(Rabites appear.)

Player: Monsters! What are monsters doing here?!

Mana Spirit: The power must have brought them here. But we've no time to waste. Tess waits.

Player: I know. I'll use the A Button to attack. I can press it up to three times to perform a combo. I'll show them what Moti has taught me! / It's time to show the skills I learned from Moti! / I used to be quite the swordsman back in the day, believe it or not. Bring it on!

(Chobin Hoods appear.)

Player: Archers! If I just charge them, I'll get shot for sure. I know! Moti taught me how to deflect arrows using my sword. / Archers... Hmm, I'll get shot if I just charge in. I know! Moti taught me how to deflect arrows using my sword. / Archers... Hmmm, I'll get shot if I just charge. I remember! I can deflect arrows using my sword. I'll just hold the A Button to protect myself. Here goes!

(After defeating the Chobin Hoods.)

Player: Hmmm, what else did I learn... I remember now! The most secret of sword techniques! / Hmm, I feels like I've forgotten something... Oh, yes! The most secret of sword techniques! The gauge on the bottom right fills each time I land a strike or take one. When the gauge is full, I can press SELECT to release its power. While it lasts, I attack faster, and I can hold the A Button to unleash powerful attacks! But the gauge doesn't last forever, so I have to keep and eye on how much I've got left.

(Slimes appear.)

Mana Spirit: I'll handle this.

Player: Huh?

Mana Spirit: Listen [Player]. To summon me, hold and release the B Button. When I come out, you can leave me alone...and I'll blast everyone around with my magic. Or touch me, and I'll lend you my power. Charge into that throng of monsters over there and summon me. And watch as I blast'em all! Oh, but remember... You'll expend MP when you summon me, so keep an eye on how much you've got.

(The player defeats the Slimes.)

Player: That's strange. I could have sworn there were some stairs around here.

Mana Spirit: I know what's going on. The fabric of space has changed, so the stairs aren't here anymore!

(A floor tile is seen glowing nearby.)

Mana Spirit: Hm? Wait a second... It's faint, but I feel the Mana goddess's power from over there. I we could amplify that light, we might be able to move to another area in the tower.

(Slimes appear. The player defeats them, and eventually finds a Gleamdrop.)

Player: What's this?

Mana Spirit: [Player], we're in luck. This is a gleamdrop, a crystallized from of the Mana Tree's power. Hopefully, it will amplify the light enough to let us go ahead. Use the A Button to lift it up and set it down onto the light.

Player: Got it! / All right. / Okay, I got it.

(The player uses the gleamdrop onto the light and is warped further up.)

Player: Well, I'm glad this place looks safe. / Well, I'm glad we came to a safe place. / Hmm. Looks like we're safe here...for now, at least.

Mana Spirit: Thank the goddess for leading us here. Now listen up, [Player]. Don't be pushing yourself to hard. If you get tired, press the Y Button to use gumdrops and other recovery items. You'll find many kinds of recovery items, each with its own healing properties, such as curing status aliments or recovering MP. If you have several kinds of items, you can switch between them by pressing the L Button, so go ahead and switch them around according to your situation. Oh, and if you want to invite your friends to our world, or if you want to go to your friend's world, go back to the village and select "Multiplayer" from the lower screen menu. If you ever come across an enemy that's too tough to beat on your own, it might be a good idea to get some help from your friends. But the rules are different from when you're playing alone, so be careful.

Player: Got it. / Thanks. / Okay. Now let's go find Tess!

(The player continues to ascend the tower.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The Player discovers Tess at the Mana Tower's summit.)

Player: Tess! Are you okay? What's going on here?

Tess: I don't know, I was praying in the Mana Tower... The ground started to shake, and everything lit up. Next thing I knew, I was here. Where are you, anyway?

Player: We're in the Mana Tower. / In the Mana Tower.

Tess: What? Are you sure?

(A giant red ball of light flies in fron of them, transforming into Xangar.)

Tess: Aaah!

Player: Wh-what is that thing? Tess, hide!

Tess: [Player]!

Player: Just go, quick!

Tess: A-all right. Be careful!

(Despite the player's best attempts, their attacks are ineffective against Xangar.)

Player: What's going on? Nothing seems to hurt it! I don't believe it! Nothing seems to hurt it! What's going on?

[CUTSCENE STARTS]

(A mysterious sword falls down the sky.)

[CUTSCENE ENDS]

Player: What could that be?

(The mysterious sword shines, beaking the barrier protecting Xangar.)

Player: Whatever force was protecting it seems to have disappeared... This could be my chance to do some damage. Here I come!

(The player defeats Xangar.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(Xangar vanishes in a blinding light and separates into two ghostly beings. They quickly flee the Mana Tower.)

Player: What just happened?

Tess: [Player]! Are you all right?

Player: Yeah. But look at that sword... / I'm fine. But look at that sword...

(The player and Tess come closer to the sword.)

Player: Where did this come from?

(As the player tries to inspect the sword, it starts to shine brightly.)

Player: Whoa! / Ah! / Ho!

Tess: Ah!

(The light coming from the sword quickly fades.)

Player: What kind of a sword is this?

Tess: ...

Player: Are you all right?

Tess: Huh? Yes, I'm all right...

Man's Voice: Well, well... How intriguing. A human child / niccolo defeating a malevodon...

Player: Who are you?!

(A strange man creeps in.)

Man: That sword... So this is the goddess's solution?

Player: What?

Man: You have no business with that sword. I'll take it for safekeeping.

(The man tries to grab the sword, but a mysterious force prevents it to do so.)

Man: What?! Hmph. I see, mother goddess, you wield some power here after all. No matter. A single sword is of no consequence. The Mana Tree is dormant and powerless to interfere. No, now on can stand in my way!

Player: Wh-what are you babbling about? / Wh-what are you talking about? / What are you babbling about?

Man: Witness the stirring of a new force! How beautifully it shines, unleashed upon the world at last! This is the only beginning. Those who were lost shall return...as the world withers silently away.

Player: As the world...withers away?

Man: Yes, the world will soon cease to exist. Can you stop it, I wonder. Hahahaha!

(The mysterious man disappear in a black vortex.)

Player: What could he means? What's going to–? Whoa! / Aah! / Ho!

Tess: Ferrik! Look!

Player: Huh?

(Three giant pillars of light appear in the neighboring continents of Fa'Diel.)

Player: Wh-what is happening here?

Tess: ...

~Obtained Holy Sword.~

(The player and Tess are next seen back to the Mana village, sharing their discoveries with Moti and Watts.)

Moti: Abnormalities in time and space, beasts never seen before... And now we have this...

Watts: Aye. It's a holy sword.

Tess: A holy sword...

Watts: So it came hurtling down as if it had a will of its own, ye say?

Player: Right. And the light it emitted helped us defeat the monster.

Tess: It also protected us from a strange man who appeared there.

Moti: A strange man? In the tower?

Player: After we defeated the monster, he came out of nowhere and tried to take the sword away.

Tess: There was an eerie air about him. He seemed to revel in all the strange things happening lately.

Player: The world is going to wither and die, he said. / He was going on about really strange things, like the world is going to wither and die. / He kept going on about strange things, like the world was going to wither away and cease to exist.

Watts: Criffins!

Moti: No... Not the horrors of ten years ago... Could he mean that the world that the gates to mavolia will open again?

Tess: ...

Moti: Well, just pondering here will do no good. Watts, wa do you say we investigate what's happening elsewhere?

Watts: Agreed. Maybe we should have a look at those giant columns of light. All right! I'll head back to Ishe to put together and expedition.

Moti: And I will beseech the other nations to help us learn more about these strange events and the damage they have caused.

Watts: Then let's get movin'!

(Watts leaves Moti's house.)

Player: Moti, what should I do? / Moti, what can I do?

Moti: I'd rather not involve someone so young / a young lady in something so dangerous... But the holy sword must have chosen you for a reason. Very well. Please join the investigation of the columns of light./ Are you going to help us?

Player: I was chosen by the holy sword. I can't sit back and watch the world go down.

Moti: Then please help us look into the columns of light.

Moti: There are three in all. They've appeared in Lorimar, Jadd, and Topple.

Player: Three columns...

Moti: According to initial report, the column in Topple seems to be exerting the strongest force. Would you head there and take a look?

Player: Of course!

Moti: Oh, yes. Let me give this to you.

(Moti whips out a weapon.)

Moti: This is a flail–a weapon I used when I was younger. It has a wider range of attack than a sword. You can also use it to pull yourself closer to walls, or to draw items toward you. If a chest seems out of reach, try snapping the flail straight out to obtain what's inside.

~Received Light Flail from Moti.~

Player: Thanks, Moti. / Thank you so much! / Thank you, Moti.

Moti: Now you have two weapons at your disposal. Would you like to try using the flail or fighting with both weapons at once?

Player: Sure, I'm game. [OR] No, maybe later. / Yes, good idea. [OR] No, thank you. / Yes, I need to get my chops back. [OR] No, thanks.

Moti: (If player has selected "Yes") Then lets move on the training ground.

Moti: (If player has selected "No") Very well. Whenever you need practice with your weapons, just let me know.

Player: Okay. Thanks!

Moti: When you're readt to set out, please come see me on the upstarirs balcony of the Silver Mermaid.

Player: The Silver Mermaid balcony?

Moti: Yes. I'll be waiting.

Player: Okay. I'll see you later! / All right, then. I'll see you later!

Tess: [Player]!

Player: Tess...

Tess: Please be careful.

Player: I'll be all right. I was chosen by the holy sword, after all! / I'll be all right. I was chosen by the holy sword, after all.

Tess: You're right. I know you'll wield its powers well. /You're right. I know you'll wield its powers well, Wanderer.

Player: Just leave it to me! I'm as good with swords as my father was! / Just leave it to me! You know how swift I am! / Just leave it to me! I'm fairly strong, believe it of not!

Tess: Of course... I believe in you, [Player].

Player: Well, I'd better get going.

Tess: I'll be praying for you with all my might, [Player]... (Wanderer doesn't get this line.)

(The player leaves Moti's house. They then go Moti's meeting place.)

Moti: I've been waiting for you, [Player]. I hope you're ready to leave for Topple.

Player: I am, but how am I supposed to get there? / Yes, I am. I'll get a boat right away–

Moti : No need for that.

Player: What?

(Moti shows the player the Spin Drum.)

Moti: Take this.

Player: What is it?

Moti: A spin drum. The spirits have entrusted it to me for times like these. It is said that you can use it to call the guardian spirit Flammie.

Player: Flammie? / I can summon Flammie.

Moti: Try it and see. / Yes. You've been chosen by the holy sword. I'm sure your call will be answered.

Player: Hm? / (Wanderer doesn't get this line.)

Moti: Go on, / Go ahead, try spinning the drum out on the balcony.

Player: O-okay... / Okay!

~Obtained Spin Drum.~

(The player walks toward the balcony, then plays the spin drum.)

[CUTSCENE STARTS]

(Flammie flies near the balcony.)

[CUTSCENE ENDS]

Star Lake

(The player rides Flammie all the way to Topple and land in Star Lake.)

Player: Here we are...

(The player make their way all the way through the deepest part of the lake.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

Player: This has to be the place. It's just like the Mana Tower. But what could this pulsating power be?

(A green ball of light appears next to the player, revealing Galem.)

Player: Another monstrosity! And it's protected by the same strange force! At the tower, the holy sword stripped those defenses for me. I wonder if it would do it again...

(The player pulls out the Mana Sword.)

Player: Sword, lend me your power!

(The holy sword shines a light on its blade, disabling Galem's barrier.)

Player: All right! I knew it would help me out! Here we go!

(The player eventually defeat Galem.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(Galem divides itself into two ghostly entities, who quickly flee the area. Another apparition of a tree is shown instead.)

Player: ?!

Treant: My, what a fine nap it was. Hoho!

Player: Wh-who are you? (Wanderer doesn't have this line.)

Player: Treant?!

Treant: Hm, I suppose it has been ten years. How the time flies! Now listen...

Treant: I am Treant, patriarch of the trees.

Player: Treant?! So you're the ancient tree spirit that once lived on Illusia? / Treant?! So you're the ancient tree spirit that once lived in Illusia? / (Wanderer doesn't have this line.)

Treant: Hm, I suppose it has been ten years. How the time flies! Now listen... This force that is warping time and space is not the cursed power of Mavolia. It is the power of Mana.

Player: Mana? What do you mean? Why would it–

Treant: I don't know why...but it's surging out of control.

Player: Mana...surging?

Treant: Yes. That is what woke me from my slumber. If it continues, however, Mana may destroy the world.

Player: Hold on... Destroy the world? / Wait... Destroy the world?

Treant: Hurry now, child of Illusia. / Hurry now, niccolo. You must find a way to quell the Mana columns that are sprouting up across the world.

Player: Quell the Mana columns...

Treant: Take this. It should open the way.

(Treant makes a branch appear before him, then vanishes.)

Player: Treant...

~Obtained Branch of Treant.~

(The player heads back to the Mana Village where they are seen talking with Tess and Moti.)

Tess: Mana...is surging out of control? Treant said that?

Player: Yes, but he said he doesn't know why. / Yeah, but he said he doesn't know why. He also said it would destroy the world if let alone.

Tess: How can that be?

Moti: So Mana is out of control... All right. I will contact Watts and discuss our next course of action.

Player: Okay. I'll look into it further, too. Bye for now! / And I'll look into it further as well. I'll see you later.

Moti: One moment. You must be accustomed to fighting with two weapons by now. I have a new weapon for you. Please take it.

(Moti presents a bow to the player.)

Player: A bow! Thanks! / A bow! Thank you! / A bow! You're always too kind.

~Received Short Bow from Moti.~

Moti: With the bow, you can attack attack enemies from afar. Combine it with the sword or flail to handle a variety of situations. You can also charm nearby monsters by plucking the bowstring. Would you like to practice use the bow?

Player: Sure, I'm game. [OR] No, maybe later. / Yes, good idea. [OR] No, thank you. / Yes, I need to get my chops back. [OR] No, thanks.

Moti: (If player has selected "Yes") Then lets move on the training ground.

Moti: (If player has selected "No") Very well. Whenever you need practice with your weapons, just let me know.

Player: Okay. Thanks!

(The player talks to Nana at the Silver Mermaid.)

Nana: Did you hear, [Player]? Monsters are going crazy over in Jadd. Mayor Moti seems worried sick about his homeland.

(The player heads over to Moti's place.)

Player: Hi, Moti. / Hello, Moti.

Moti: Oh, [Player]. I was just about to go looking for you. I just go word that monsters are wreaking havoc in the desert in Jadd.

Player: Are you serious? / Is that true? / You can't be serious!

Moti: I'm afraid so... I assume the column of light there has something to do with it. Would you go and investigate?

Player: With pleasure! / Yes. Absolutely. / Of course I would!

Moti: We don't know what kind of danger awaits here. Be sure to prepare your weapons, armor, and gems.

Player: I know! / I know. I know.

Moti: I'm counting on you, [Player].

Fiery Sands

(The player heads to Jadd's Fiery Sands.)

Player: This is no good... I can't get through these winds! Wait! Maybe that branch from Treant can help...

(The player raises Trant's banch up high and a light shines from it, making the sandstorm stop.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The player reaches the deepest part of the desert. A purple light shines before the player and transforms into Thaydol.)

Player: I knew it! Another monster protected by a barrier! I don't know what's going on, but I'm not about to let anyone destroy the world! Sword, lend me your strength!

(A light shining brightly coming from the sword dissipates the barrier protecting the monster.)

Player: All right! Here I come! Yes! Here we go!

(The player eventually defeat Thaydoll.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The players raises the holy sword, its blade shining toward the monster, making itself separate into two ghostly figures who quickly scurry away. A rocky face appears next to the player.)

Gaia: Hmm... So you are the heir to the holy sword of Mana... And I seen new troubles have been brewing while I slept.

Player: Wh-who are you? / Could you be...Gaia?

Gaia: I am Gaia, face of the earth. / Wanderer doesn't have this line.

Player: Gaia...

Gaia: Violent forces flowed through that creature's body, causing it to evolve into a malevodon. Your sword restored it to its true form. That is how to malevodons were reborn as benevodons.

Player: Benevodons?

Gaia: Correct. It seems they are six of them already born: Fire and Wind, Light and Wood, Moon and Shadow. The holy sword has the Mana goddess's power to restore the world to its proper state.

Player: The world as it should be... The sword of the Mana goddess...

Gaia: Listen, child of man. / Listen well, niccolo. I know neither his intentions nor his tactics as of yet. But you msut stop that man at any cost...even if it defies the will of the planet.

Player: Stop who? And what is the "will of the planet"?

Gaia: Take this with you...

(Gaia's makes a stone appear before the player.)

Gaia: My power and Treant's should help you break his spell.

Player: His...spell?

Gaia: Be very careful. The fate of the world rests upon you, your friends, and the holy sword.

(Gaia quickly vanishes.)

Player: The fate... What do you mean? Wait! Gaia, please! You have to tell me more! / Wait, Gaia! You must tell me more!

~Obtained Stone of Gaia.~

(The player returns to the Mana Village when they tell Moti & Tess what's happened.)

Moti: So Gaia has also returned.

Player: Gaia said I have to stop "that man."

Tess: Who does he mean?

Player: Probably that guy who was at the Mana Tower. / Probably that man who was at the Mana Tower. / Probably the one who was at the Mana tower.

Tess: The one who said the world was going to wither away...

(The player shows Gaia's stone.)

Player: Oh, and I got this from Gaia. And I got this from Gaia. He said his power and Treant's power can break the man's spell.

Moti: His spell? What did he mean?

Player: I don't know. Gaia left without telling me.

Tess: ...

Moti: Well, there is more to investigate, that's for sure. Ah, yes. [Player]... After I told Watts what you were doing, he sent you a gift. It's a hammer he crafted himself.

(Moti shows the hammer to the player.)

Player: Thanks! Guess I'd better thank Watts, too. / Thank you! I guess I'd better thank Watts, too. / I always knew Watts could be a kind fellow.

~Received Mallet from Moti.~

Moti: An attack with the hammer can send an enemy skidding away. You can also strike the ground to knock surrounding enemies back with shock waves. Obstacles that are impossible to break with the sword can be pulverized with the hammer. Would you like to practice using the hammer?

Player: Sure, I'm game. [OR] No, maybe later. / Yes, good idea. [OR] No, thank you. / Yes, I need to get my chops back. [OR] No, thanks.

Moti: (If player has selected "Yes") Then lets move on the training ground.

Moti: (If player has selected "No") Very well. Whenever you need practice with your weapons, just let me know.

Player: Okay. Thanks!

(The player talks to Tess.)

Player: Hey, Tess. / Hi, Tess! / Hello, Tess.

Tess: [Player]...

Player: What's the matter? You look sad.

Tess: Well... Monsters have apparently overrun the Ice Citadel. They're terrorizing the people of Lorimar.

Player: No way! / Oh, no! / What?

Tess: But the citadel seems to be protected by some sort of barrier, and no one can get inside.

Player: A barrier?

Tess: Something to do with a really powerful spell.

Player: A powerful spell? Wait... that could be it!

Tess: Huh?

Player: That barrier could be the spell that Gaia was talking about!

Tess: That man's spell?

Player: Exactly. It it's true, using Treant's branch and Gaia's stone should be able to shatter the barrier. / Exactly. If it's true, using Treant's branch and Gaia's stone should shatter the barrier. / Right! If it's true, Trant's Branch and Gaia's stone should be able to shatter the barrier. I know you're from Lorimar, Tess. I won't let get them away with this!

Tess: [Player]...

Player: Don't worry. I'll take care of it!

(The player heads to the Ice Citadel.)

Ice Citadel

(The player use both Treant's branch and Gaia's stone to neutralize the Ice Citadel's barrier.)

Player: Looks like the spell's broken! / It appears the spells's broken! There must be something important inside. / There has to be something important inside.

Player: It's freezing here...but I can't let that stop me! / Here I come! / Let's go!

(The player ventures into the deepest part of the Ice Citadel.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The Mana Lord is seen standing alone. The player runs toward him.)

Man: You! How did you get in here? You couldn't have broken the spell that easily... Ah I see. Treant and Gaia. So the surge of Mana has stirred up some dregs... No matter, I'm afraid you're a little late. The next stage of my plan is already under way.

Player: What plan? What are you trying to do?

Man: Hmph. I think you're better off not knowing.

Player: What?! / Excuse me?!

Man: Dwellers of this land once wrought vessels to contain the power of Mana. They used them as channeling orbs. But when chaos engulfed this world ten years ago...those orbs were buried underground. There they have remained to this day. Tell me, what do you think would happen if they were released all at once?

Player: You're going to release all that energy from those orbs?!

Man: Precisely. Mana will surge to new heights and devastate the world anew!

Player: H-how could you come up with something so crazy? / H-how could you even think of something so horrifying? / You can't do that!

Man: Hahaha... It's all the will of the Mana goddess.

Player: The goddess wants this? Impossibe! / That's nonsense!

Man: It's true. The Mana goddess–

Player: That's enough! / I think I've heard enough! Your plan will mean nothing once I'm done with you!

Man: Hmph. What could an insect like you do? Landmund, he's / she's all yours!

(A blue ball of light appears next to the Mana Lord, making way for Landmund.)

Player: A malevodon?! So you've been behind those monsters all along , huh?

Man: Landmund isn't like the other malevodons you've fought. Are you sure you're ready?

Player: Shut ut! / Don't insult me! / I'm more than adequately prepared. The holy sword can restored this malevodon to normal! Sword, lend me your strength!

(The holy sword doesn't respond.)

Player: Huh? / What? What's wrong?

Man: Hahaha... It seems your sword has forsaken you.

Player: What?!

Man: Perhaps it's finally realized you're unworthy of such a blade. Now, surrender to your fate!

Player: Damn it! Why? Answer me, sword! / No! Why? Please, answer me, sword! / Why? Why isn't anything happening? Answer me, sword!

Tess's Voice: [Player], you have to focus! Believe in the sword!

Player: What? Okay... / O-Okay...

(The player draws their sword again, a shining light coming from the blade. The barrier on Landmund disappears.)

Man: Impossible!

Player: Yes! Here I come!

(The player eventually defeats Landmund.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(Landmund transforms into a ball of light again, splitting itself into two ghostly figures. The two of them fly away as the Mana Lord emerges form a black vortex.)

Man: Hmph. Now eight of the elemental benevodons are born. Dear planet, what is it you seek? Well, impressive indeed–a mere mortal able to draw upon the sword's power so well.

Player: Stop mumbling already! Now it's your turn!

Man: My turn? You would wield that sword against me?

Player: It's too late for apologies!

Man: Ignorant fool...

(The holy blade suddenly moves on its own and stabs the player.)

Man: How do you like your sword now?

Player: Urgh... / Ooh... How did that happen?

Man: That weapon is the Sword of Mana. It was crafted by the Mana goddess herself. Mortal hands cannot wield it.

Player: The Sword of Mana?

Man: It answers only to me, the Mana Lord.

Player: The Mana Lord?!

(The Mana Lord calls back the Sword of Mana to his hands.)

Mana Lord: Sword of Mana... You have returned to the hands of your rightful master.

(The Mana Lord approaches the player and draws the holy blade toward them.)

Mana Lord: Now, let us end this. Taste the blade of the Sword of Mana!

Player: Ugh... / No...

Watt's Voice: Stop!

(Watts & Tess rush near the player.)

Tess: [Player]! Are you all right?

Player: Tess... Watts...

(Watts faces the Mana Lord.)

Watts: Ye beast from–

Mana Lord: Hmph. They come like moths to a flame... Hm?

(The Mana Lord glances at Tess.)

Mana Lord: Maiden, I see you are blessed with the goddess's grace. It was you who shattered Landmund's barrier. Ha! How amusing.

(An earthquake starts.)

Mana Lord: The time has come...

Watts: Haw, what's this? This earthquake can't be–

Mana Lord: Yes, the channeling orbs rise... Now comes the tempest!

Watts: By criffins!

(A gigantic column of light is seen reaching an ominous vortex in the sky.)

Mana Lord: Farewell, children of Mana! You worthless insects! Ahahahah!

(Watts tries reaching the Mana Lord, but the latter escapes in his black vortex.)

Watts: Come back, ye feartie!

Tess: [Player], hang in there! [Player]!

(The player is seen resting at Moti's place, Tess as their side. Watts and Moti are seen discussing the matter.)

Watts: Mana will bring about the end of the world? It's out o' thought!

Moti: Fires can burn down all we hold dear. Winds can blow away everything in sight. Rivers can flood and wash away everything downstream in the blink of an eye. A very fine line divides power from peril. A force of good can become an evil if it gets out of hand. Mana is no exception.

Watts: That's all very interesting, but it isn't going to save us.

Moti: Hmmm... Perharps the surge of Mana altered the composition of gems as well?

Tess: Who is the Mana Lord, anyway? What is he trying to accomplish?

Watts: Whatever it is, we've got to stop this madness somehow.

Tess: But how?

Moti: With the holy sword. The only thing in our world that can counter Mana's force is the holy sword sent from the Mana goddess.

Watts: But that very sword is now in the clutches of the Mana Lord!

Tess: He said that he alone can command the sword.

Everyone: ...

Unknown voice: Perharps we can help.

Moti: Hmm?

(The Treant's branch and Gaia's stone float toward the party, revealing the guardians of nature.)

Watts: Treant! Gaia!

Treant: The tempest will soon hit the verdant kingdom of Wendel. You must go there and subdue the Mana Storm.

Gaia: At the heart of the tempest, strike at the power of Mana with the combined strength of the eight elemental spirits. That should offset the tempest's energy and calm it down.

Treant: Then we'll use that momentum to suppress the Mana surge.

Moti: I see! That just might work with the spirits' help!

Watts: Good! Let's do it! We'll crush the tempest and get Mana under control!

Moti: But plunging into the heart of the tempest will be dangerous...

(The player wakes up and leaves their bed.)

Player: I-I'll go...

Tess: [Player]! Your wounds hasn't healed!

Player: It's just a scratch. I'm all right. Moti, Watts, please... Let me do it. / Leave it to me.

Watts: [Player]... All right, lad / lass. We're counting on ye. Don't ye let us down.

Player: I won't!

Treant: Once you've reached the center, call for Gaia and me. Together with the spirits, we will come.

Player: Okay! / All right!

Watts: Well, now that that's settled, let's get yoked to it!

(The player sets out for Brightwood in Wendel.)

Brightwood

(The storm is raging in Brightwood.)

Player: Man, what at storm... It could blow me to oblivion... / What a storm... I can hardly keep my feet. / My, what a storm... I can hardly keep my feet... but I have to keep moving and stop it!

(The player ventures into Brightwood.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The player comes to the deepest part of the woods. In the middle of a clearing, a pulsating orb seems to be the source of the storm.)

Player: The eye of the storm is awfully quiet...

(The player approaches the eye of the storm.)

Player: Treant said to call for them one I got here. All right!

(The player tries to use both Treant's branch and Gaia's stone, but the Mana Lord appears out of a vortex.)

Mana Lord: So you made it this far... Actually, I thought you might.

Player: You again!

(The Mana Lord shows the player the Mana Sword.)

Mana Lord: Your beloved sword is right here. You've come to take it back and save the world, I suppose.

Player: That's right!

Mana Lord: Hmph. Ever the gallant one, I see. Well, it is impressive that the likes of you made it here on your own. I made have underestimated you. But you will hinder me no longer. What are you trying to do? If this goes on–

Mana Lord: The world will cease to exist.

Player: What?!

Mana Lord: Total annihilation. The planet will be finished...withering away in a maestrol of Mana.

Player: You're insane!

Mana Lord: Not at all. I am quite serious. Did you think all of this was merely to settle a personal grudge? Or that I was trying to take over the world? Hmph, please...

Player: I don't understand you at all...

Mana Lord: Now then, on with the show. How will you quiet the Mana Storm? This ought to be a sight to see.

(The Mana Lord vanishes while the Mana storm starts to become wider and more violent.)

(The player eventually defeat the Mana storm.)

[RESULTS SCORE]

(The Mana Storm gradually subsides while the Mana Lord returns.)

Mana Lord: Well, well... That wasn't half bad. But how to you intend to vanquish the Mana tempest without the Sword of Mana? You are welcome to fight it to you heart's content, but...

(The Treant's branch and the Gaia's stone become jumps out of the player, making Treant and Gaia appear.)

Mana Lord: Treant? Gaia? You again! Still, you are powerless before Mana's ferocity...

Treant: Indeed. Against the power of Mana, we stand no chance alone...

Gaia: But if we are not alone?

Mana Lord: What?

(Gnome, Salamander, and Wisp appear.)

Mana Lord: The spirits! You all dare defy Mana?

(Luna, Jinn, Shade, Dryad, and Undine appear.)

Mana Lord: Curse you all!

[CUTSCENE STARTS]

(The eight Mana spirits fly toward the eye of the storm, creating a powerful column of light breaking it.)

[CUTSCENE ENDS]

Player: We did it!

Mana Lord: How dare you...

Wanderer: All right, we can do this! Now, let's get Mana back under control!

Mana Lord: Forget it!

(The Mana lord casts his dark magic, summoning powerful lightning bolts, making all characters disappear beside the player.)

Player: Treant! Gaia!

Mana Lord: Enough is enough. I told you. You will not get in my way!

(The Mana Lord unleash his magic on the player, knocking them back.)

Player: Agh! / Aah!

(The Mana Lord slowly walks toward the player and pulls out the Sword of Mana.)

Player: Grr... / Ugh...

(The Mana Lord lifts the holy blade toward the player.)

Mana Lord: Die.

(A small, purple gem appears next to the Mana Lord.)

Mana Lord: Hm? What is this...

(Multiple gems surrounds the Mana Lord.)

Player: Gems?

(The gems cling to the Mana Lord.)

Mana Lord: Wh-what the– I can't move! What are these things? Well, if that's how you want to play...

(The Mana Lord slashes the gems away, looking quite winded afterward.)

Mana Lord: imbeciles... I don't believe this...the whole lot of you defying me, the Mana Lord? I am here to make the world right, to fill the world with Mana as the goddess wishes!

(The player recovers.)

Player: A world filled with Mana? There's no way the goddess would want that...

Mana Lord: You persistent worms... I should have gotten rid of you at Lorimar. Wait! The girl... Yes, of course. With the powers of the Mana Tree's maiden...

Player: The Mana Tree's maiden? Oh, no! Tess! / Are you talking about Tess?

Mana Lord: The seed... the seed of Mana! Heheheh... Mother goddess, at long I shall carry out your wishes. Just wait, my little insects. Your end is near... Hahaha!

(The Mana Lord escapes through a vortex.)

Player: Hey, wait! / Wait! Stop! What was he talking about? What does he want with Tess?

(Back to the Mana Village, the player touches the Mana Stone, summoning multiple gems around them. They are warped in a strange place.)

Illusia Ruins

Player: What a desolate place... Why do I get the feeling I've been here before? Tess... Tess has to be here somewhere! / Tess.. Tess must be here somewhere!

(The player ventures into the ruins.)

[RESULTS SCORE]

(The Mana Lord and Tess are conversing.)

Mana Lord: Now, it is time for you to lend me your powers.

Tess: Powers? I don't have any powers for you!

Mana Lord: Oh, but you do. You have great powers. And I need them.

Tess: Excuse me?

Mana Lord: Call the seed of Mana!

Tess: The...seed of Mana?

Mana Lord: The seed of Mana lies dormant somewhere in these ruins. If I utilize the powers within the seed, Mana will surge completely out of control and swallow the world whole.

Tess: Mana surging, swallowing the world whole... Can you talk of nothing else? You really intend to destroy the world?

Mana Lord: Ha... I only seek to fill the world with Mana. Whatever becomes of vermin like you is no concern of mine. No, do it! Call the seed of Mana!

Tess:...

Mana Lord: You only need to call out to it and the seed will answer. Call to it! Now!

Tess: No.

Mana Lord: What?

Tess: I want you to return the holy sword. Please, you must stop this nonsense.

(The Mana Lord jerks the Sword of Mana toward Tess.)

Mana Lord: I don't think you quite understand your position.

[Player]'s Voice: Stop!

(The player runs toward Tess.)

Tess: [Player]!

(Tess hides behind the player.)

Mana Lord: Well, well. You again. Your tenacity is admirable.

Player: Tess, are you all right?

Tess: Yes.

Player: Where are we?

Tess: I don't know...but I feel like I've been here before.

Mana Lord: This is Illusia. The Sanctuary of Mana, to be precise.

Player: Huh?

Tess: This is...the Sanctuary?

Mana Lord: Yes, in several thousand years yet to come.

Tess: What?!

Mana Lord: In its current chaotic state, Mana distorts time and space. It has drawn the Illusia of the future to the present.

Tess: No... these ruins can't be Illusia!

Mana Lord: But they are. Look around. This is the future of the Sanctuary of Mana. This is the end to what you so dearly love and believe. All things must eventually crumble and perish... Mana is no exception. Everything will be lost. Everything.

Player: ...

Tess: ...

Mana Lord: Of course, some things do return...

(The screen turns black, leaving only the player in sight.)

Player: What–?

(A bright ball of light appears before the player, two shadows emerging from it.)

Familiar Voice: [Player]...

Familiar Voice [2]: [Player]!

Player: Those voices...

(A third shadow appears, except for Wanderer.)

Familiar Voice [3]: [Player]! (Wanderer doesn't have this line.)

Player: N-no... I can't be...

Familiar Voice: Yes, it's us, [Player]. The surge of Mana brought us back. It's brought us back to you!

Player: No... No way! / No! It's a lie! / That's impossible! You all died! Everyone died in the cataclysm! Everyone!

Father's Voice: But it's me, [Player]. (Wanderer doesn't get this line.)

Sophie's Voice: But it's me, Wanderer.

Mother's Voice: I'm here, [Player]. (Wanderer doesn't get this line.)

Danny's Voice: Don't you recognize me, player?

Sis' Voice: So you haven't forgotten me, have you? / Brother's Voice: You haven't forgotten me, have you, Tamber? (Wanderer doesn't get that line.)

Player: Father... Mother... Sis... / Mom... Dad... Toby... / Sophie...Danny...

(The player comes toward the light.)

Tess's Voice: [Player]! [Player]!!

(The illusion stops and the player is in the Sanctuary of Mana once again.)

Player: Huh?!

Tess: Are you okay, [Player]?

Player: Wh-what just happened?

Mana Lord: Did you hear them? Voices from the fringes of memory...

Player: What?

Mana Lord: Look around you.

(Shadows are seen gliding on the ground.)

Player: Wh-what are these shadows?

Mana Lord: Those that were lost have returned. I am a collection of the lost...and a bridge between this world and the hereafter.

Player: The lost?

Mana Lord: The millions of faces, the millions of names...and the millions of voices resurrected through the chaotic swell of Mana... The innumerable lives that were lost and returned to Mana... That's me.

Player: That's impossible! / That's impossible...

Mana Lord: And soon, you will be one of them. Give in...and let Mana consume you!

(The shadows gathers to create a hideous, misshapen monster.)

(The player eventually defeats the monster.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The player and Tess are standing beside each other when the shadows from the player's relatives return.)

Shadow: [Player]...

(The shadows give the player a wooden horse / hairpin / harmonica)

Player:...

(The shadows disappear are the player picks up the item.)

~Obtained Wooden Horse / Hairpin / Harmonica.~

(The Mana Lord comes out from afar.)

Mana Lord: Hmph. What a useless mishmash.

Player: You'll pay for this! / You won't get away with this!

(The player lunges at the Mana Lord but is knocked back by his strength.)

Player: Ugh! / Agh!

Tess: [Player]?!

(The Mana Lord points the holy sword toward the player.)

Mana Lord: I'll finish you myself!

Player: Agh... / Ugh...

Tess: (to the Mana Lord) May I ask you something?

Mana Lord: What?

Tess: What exactly does the sword mean to you? Do you think it's just for hurting and killing your enemies?

Mana Lord: What's your point? The Sword of Mana is a weapon–a tool to slay all who would oppose me.

Tess: You're wrong. It is more than a weapon!

Mana Lord: Hmph. Nonsense! You cannot imagine how much blood this sword will shed...or how many lives it will end!

Tess:...

Mana Lord: Move. Or I'll kill you, too...and obtain the seed of Mana by other means...

(A small red gem pops out near the Mana Lord.)

Mana Lord: Hm?

(Multiple gems come out near him.)

Mana Lord: Geodes?! Annoying little pebbles! Out of my sight! Begone!

(The Mana Lord wipes them all out, then casts a ball of energy toward Tess and the player.)

Mana Lord: I've had enough of you, too.

(The ball of energy gets bigger.)

Player: Tess!

(The Mana Lord hurls the ball of light at the two of them, but is absorbed by another ball of light.)

Tess: Ah!

Player: Whoa!

Mana Lord: Could this be...the seed of Mana?

Tess: What?

(The Mana Lord pockets the seed of Mana.)

Mana Lord: Heheheh... Hahahahaha! O mother goddess, with this we can unleash the ful force of the Mana surge. It's all coming to an end. Everything! Just you wait and see... Soon the world will return to Mana! Ahahahaha!

(The Mana Lord escapes through a vortex.)

Player: Wait! Stop! Damn it... / Wait! Stop! / Wait! Stop! Curse you...

Tess: The seed of Mana... He said it would unleash the full force of the Mana surge.

Player: We have to stop him somehow!

Tess: ...

Player: It's no use worrying about it! / It's no use worrying about it now! We should head back to the village and plan our next move.

Tess: [Player]... You're right. Let's go home.

(Back to the Mana Village, Tess and the Player explain the situation to Moti and Watts.)

Watts: So, by yer way of it, Illusia will be reduced to ruins someday?

Player: Yes / Yeah. Even the Mana Tree had withered...

Moti: So, something in the future will cause the Mana Tree to wither and Illusia to fall.

Tess: But the Mana Tree wasn't dead. It may have looked like it had rotted away, but it had a new life underground, waiting for the time to sprout.

Moti: Then the seed of Mana that you saw must have been the new life the Mana Tree was waiting for.

Player: New life... for the Mana Tree...

Watts: So where did the thief take the seed?

Everyone: ...

Watts: Ach! Where's the goddess when we need her most? Or could she have caused the surge herself–

Tess: That's impossible. Besides, the goddess has not been absent. She surely had a plan in mind when she sent the holy sword to this world?

Watts: W-well... Aye, I suppose.

Tess: Anyway, we must track down the Mana Lord.

Watts: Tess is right. We've got to find out where he is. The question is...how?

(Treant's branch and Gaia's stone come into Moti's place, revealing both Treant and Gaia.)

Treant: The Mana Lord is at the heart of the Mana surge.

Player: Treant! Gaia! You're all right?

Treant: Hoho! We won't go down that easily.

Watts: The heart of the Mana surge? What do ye mean?

Gaia: It is where the source of Mana lies.

Treant: What do you think would happen if the Mana seed, filled with new power, were released in a place like that?

Moti: Mana would absorb it and grow completely uncontrollable!

Watts: So that's the finishing touch!

Player: Treant, Gaia, please tell me! Just who is this Mana Lord?

Treant: The Mana Lord was also born of the goddess. But he never understood her true will. He thinks only of filling the world with Mana. He wants Mana to surge completely out of control and swallow the entire world. And he'll accomplish this by any means necessary.

Gaia: The Mana Lord is trying to elminate everything we know and create a world filled with Mana. And now that the seed of Mana is in his hands, it's only a matter of time.

Moti: Oh, no...

Tess: We must hurry and stop him!

Player: Where is the heart of the Mana surge?

Gaia: Deep under the roots of the Mana Tree...

Player: Under the Mana Tree... All right! / Got it!

(The player flies to the base of the Mana Tree.)

Path of Life

(The Tree of Mana towers over the player.)

Player: So the Mana Lord is down below!

(Tess rushes to the player.)

Tess: Wait, [Player]!

Player: Tess?

Tess: This may be the last battle. I'm sur he knows it, too.

Player: Probably.

Tess: I...

Player: What's wrong, Tess?

Tess: Everyone has been fighting for their lives, but I... I can't do a thing. I feel so useless...

Player: You've got it all wrong! What about all the times you've bailed me out? / What about all the times you've helped me out? I would have never made it this far without you. Believe me, you're far from useless.

Tess: Thank you, [Player].

Player: Well, on to the center of all the chaos! If I can figure out how to get there, that is...

(A glowing orb is shining through the player.)

Tess: [Player], that glow...

(The player pulls out the heirloom they got from the shadows back in the Sanctuary of Mana.)

Player : It's the toy horse / hairpin / harmonica from the Sanctuary of Mana.

Tess: Why was it glowing like that?

(The heirloom moves on its own toward the Tree of Mana and creates a portal.)

Player: Whoa! / Ho!

Tess: Maybe it leads underground?

Player: Only one way to find out!

Tess: Come back safely, [Player]. / Please come back safely, Wanderer.

Player: I will.

(The player enters the portal and is teleported to the Path of Life.)

(The player eventually reaches the deepest part of the maze.)

[RESULTS SCORE]

(The Mana Lord stands in front of the player, the seed of Mana in his hands.)

Mana Lord: Welcome to the Path of Life, the heart of chaos. I've been expecting you. The time as come. Soon, this planet will drown helplessly in a sea of Mana. It will be envelopped in the dazzling radiance of life in its purest form. All shall return forever to Mana! Ahahaha!

Player: What's the purpose of all this?

Mana Lord: Purpose? There is no such thing in this world. It's merely and artificial measure that your kind imposes at will. Why don't you explain the purpose of that to me? What could be more meaningless? It's nothing more than illusion!

Player: ...

Mana Lord: Well, shall we end this once and for all? I'm glad you're here. THe show would have been a waste without an audience. Watch as I crack the seed of Mana open right before your eyes!

Player: Don't

Mana Lord: Mana! Swallow it all! Haaaaa!

(The Mana Lord strikes the seed of Mana with the holy blade, making multiples gems appear next to him. The gems create a protective barrier preventing the destruction of the seed.)

Mana Lord: Wh-what is this? How could geodes have such power? This is impossible for mere crystals of Mana... Could it be... Could it be these geodes be crystals of living memory? Each one a will to live, crystallized and preserved by the power of Mana! So you have come here from the future ruins of the Sanctuary. Ludicrous! You think you can stop me with this nonsense? Get out of my sight!

(The Mana Lord tries to hit the seed of Mana, to no avail.)

Mana Lord: No... Immune to the Sword of Mana?! This cannot be happening!

[CUTSCENE STARTS]

(The camera pans over the Tree of Mana with red birds hovering beside it.)

Tess (communicating telepatically): The Sword of Mana is not a mere weapon. Don't you hear the voices of the gems? Life must go on. And that is where one finds true meaning.

[CUTSCENE ENDS]

(Back to the depths of the Path of Life, the screen darkens as the Mana Lord summons bolts of lightning.)

Mana Lord: Silence! Silence!! I shall send you to oblivion along with these meddlesome geodes! Now, you time as come!

(The Mana Lord engages battle, but the player proves themselves to be quite skillfull in combat.)

Mana Lord: Hmph. It appears you have some fight in you. But do you really think a worm like you can defeat me? This is it! Prepare to meet your fate!

(The Mana Lord releases a blinding light, giving him enought strength to keep on fighting.)

(The player eventually defeats the Mana Lord.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(The weaken Mana Lord rests on the holy sword.)

Mana Lord: Grr... The goddess has just descended into this world and does not yet understand herself. And so her powers, unchecked, spun out of control. This produced an entity with a will of its own...which is now running amok, deliriously intoxicated with its own powers. It is roaming the entire planet, laughing, like an innocent newborn baby. Yes, the force behind the great surge of Mana is a child: the scion of Mana.

Player: The scion...of Mana...

Mana Lord: Give the seed of Mana to the maiden. She should know its true use... And you can take this sword.

(The Mana Lord gives the holy sword to the player.)

Mana Lord: When the first columns of light sprouted on Illusia, it was the goddess who sent you this sword at the tower.

Player: Yes, I know. I had a feeling... / Yeah, I know. I had a feeling...

Mana Lord: She must have wanted you to stop the chaos she could not. But that was all she could do. By then, the Mana Tree was dormant, shackled by the uncontrollable power of the Mana columns.

Player: You mean...you knew that the Mana goddesswas trying to stop the chaos?

Mana Lord: What a laugh. After giving birth to the scion and me, she was struggling with all her might to stop us...

Player: If you knew all that, why did you–

Mana Lord: Because that's what I am.

Player: What?

Mana Lord: I was born to fill the world with Mana. I was merely carrying out my duty. A duty which I have yet to complete...

Player: ...

Mana Lord: But now I see... The gems are a fusion of the force of Mana and the will to live of the creatures of this planet... How far will you and the gems get, fighting Mana? How I longed to free Mana's powers... the powers of the scion! I am the Mana Lord! Dear planet, witness my end! Take my life, my child!

Player: Wait! Don't do it! / Wait! Don't!

(The Mana Lord jumps into a pool of Mana.)

Player: No! This is bad... Nothing can stop Mana's powers now!

(The player flees the premises.)

~Obtained Holy Sword.~

~Obtained Seed of Mana.~

(Back on Illusia Isle, several balls of light sprouts from the ground and merge into a greater ball of light at the top of the Mana Tree. This creates a portal to a cave. The eight benevodons spirits are seen hovering around Illusia Isle. People are gathering at the Mana Village looking at the portal.)

Moti: A rift has opened in the skies above the Mana Tree. It seems the source of chaos–the scion of Mana–is there.

Watts: Aye. Looks like we've got no choice but to charge in and stop this madness ourselves!

Moti: You mean...face off directly against Mana's powers? Is such a thing even possible?

Watts: We can do it. We've got the holy sword on our side. Right, [Player]?

Player: Well, about that... / Well... I don't know... / Well, maybe not...

(The player shows the holy sword being coverted in black vines.)

Watts: What's this? The sword is covered in black vines... Is this really the holy sword?

Moti: Perhaps this is a sign that we were wrong to expect the sword to bare its fangs againt Mana itself...

Watts: Ye're sayin' the sword has forsaken us?

Player: ...

Watts: Well, let it! I care not a tait! The real fightning begins when all hope is lost and ye've fallen as far as ye can fall. If we don't do something, the world's goin' to wither away. The time for arguin' has passed. This is the time to fight. To fight against Mana!

Moti: Watts...

Player: We'll be all right, Moti / Mayor. The Mana goddess won't forsake us. We won't lose!

Moti: But with the sword in such a bad shape...

Tess: The holy sword is more than a mere weapon, Moti. It's blessed with the powers to set things right, as it did when it turned back the malevodons back into benevodons. As long as we are fighting to set the world right again, the sword will lend us its power. I'm sure of it.

Player: Yeah. Tess is right. I'm going! / Yes. Tess is right. I'm going! / Yes. Tess is right. I'm off!

(The player summons Flammie and enter the Cosmic Rift.)

Cosmic Rift

(While exploring the Cosmic Rift, the player encounter familiar shadows in a hazy dead end. The shadows are revealed to be clones of all the other playable characters.)

Player: What are these things? Apparitions created by Mana!

(The player eventually defeats the shadows.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

[CUTSCENE STARTS]

(Tess is seen praying near the Mana Tree.)

Tess: [Player]...

[CUTSCENE ENDS]

(The player enters the deepest part of the Cosmic Rift.)

[RESULTS SCREEN]

(While exploring the Cosmic Rift, the player is surrounded by sprouting plants. The Scion of Man emerges in the center, making the ground shake and the path behind crumble.)

[CUTSCENE STARTS]

(Tess is praying at the foot of the Mana Tree.)

Tess: Whose soul wields it decides our fate...

[CUTSCENE ENDS]

(Back to the Cosmic Rift, the player brandishes the holy sword.)

Player: Sword! Show me... The weight of my soul! The future of this world!

(The player eventually defeats the Scion of Mana by reverting the holy blade back to its original self.)

Player: This is it! / Haaaa!

(The player plants the sword in the ground, making the whole area bursting with light.)

Player: Aaahh!!

(Back on Illusia Isle, the Mana Tower is seen radiating with light.)

Moti: What a brilliant light... Energy taking the form of matter?

Watts: Look, Moti. That's how miracles are born. Our [Player]'s gone and done it!

(The Mana Tower is gone, replaced instead by a small shower of sparkles. Meanwhile, Tess is seen looking around at the base of the Mana Tree.)

Tess: What's happening to the seed?

(The Seed of Mana hovers in front of the Mana Tree and shines brightly. At the same time in Mana Village, the elemental spirits & the villagers are seen celebrating.)

Tess: [Player]!

Player: Tess! What are you doing here? Wait! Where am I? The Mana Tree... I'm back on Illusia. The powers that shackled it are gone... The Mana Tree is alive again!

(A small baby wrapped in cloth appears before them.)

Tess: Mana's child.

(A group of gems pops out of the ground and start glowing, the merge with the seed of Mana and Mana's child. This produces a blue seed, as Treant and Gaia's spirits appear.)

Treant: That is Mana's progeny. It shall be entrusted to the daughters of Mana when at last the Tree falls one day.

Tess: The daughters of Mana?

Gaia: That's right. The descendent of your children's children, far in the future...

Player: ....

(The Mana's progeny rises high in the sky, creating a ghostly image of a woman holding a child in the Tree's bark.)

Player: Where's the sword? The Sword of Mana?

Tess: It has returned to Mana, where it belongs.

Player: So it's...all over now? / Then...it's all over now...

Tess: No, it's just begun. Welcome home, [Player].

(The Illusia Isle is seen from a distance on a boat.)

Moti: Illusia must be sealed off as a sanctuary. Its powers are too great for any mortal to handle. The benevodons will bear it away where it cannot be reached. Until one day...

Player: ...

(The player reminisces his last time in Mana Village, as people are leaving the isle.)

Player: Do you have to stay here?

Tess: Yes... someone has to stay on the island. I want to stay with the Mana Tree.

Player: Right... I understand...

Tess: The Mana Tree and I will always be watching over you...

Player: Thanks...

Tess: Goodbye.

Player: Goodbye...

(The player is seen on the boat overlooking Illusia Isle. The Benevodons surrounding it come into formation and shine a bright light on the isle, making it disappear.)

Grampa Tony: Ohh!

Granny Hannah: Look at the island!

Player: Farewell...

(For a brief moment, a portrait of Tess can be seen instead of the island.)

Moti: Well, let's get moving. We shall head for Jadd, my homeland, for now. Undine! Jinn! We're counting on you!

Watts: (Seeing that the player is sad.) Eh, what's the matter? Keep your chip up, [Player]. We've got a lot to do in the new world, you know!

Ferrik: Yeah, I guess you're right, Watts.

Tamber: The Mana goddess will always watch over us!

Wanderer: It's the start of a brand new world!

Poppen: Goodbye, Tess!

Watts: All right! Let's go!

(The camera pans over the sea and up to the sky.)

And that's how Illusia Isle was sealed off as a sanctuary and sent to a place far beyond the reach of mortals.

(The book from the opening scene is shown.)

Even now, maidens attend to the Mana Tree and watch over us all with great affection, that we might enjoy peace and properity.

[CREDITS]

(A still of the closed book is shown.)

And that is the end of the tale. Did you find it entertaining? What's that? You want to hear more of the tree and the sword? Hohoho... Let this be enough for now. I will gladly tell you another story another day. Now be a good child, and go to sleep. I will pray to the goddess that your dreams be sweet.

A Maiden's Prayer

(The player decides to go talks to Tess.)

Player: Tess.

Tess: (Sad) What is it...

Player: Say, why the long face?

Tess: Who, me?

Player: if there's something on your mind, I'd be happy to listen.

Tess: Thanks, [Player]. But don't you have other things that demand your attention?

Player: Oh, come on! We're friends, right? Just give me a shot.

Tess: Well, it's about the Mana Tower.

Player: Go on...

Tess: Since the day that column of light appeared, it's become infested with monsters.

Player: Yeah...

Tess: So I haven't gone back... I haven't offered prayers since then.

Player: Of course you haven't! Nobody wants you to go back to a place like that.

Tess: But I want to return.

Player: You do?

Tess: You see, if I could just pray at the tower each day, then maybe the world could be saved.

Player: I don't know...

Tess: All I can do is pray to the goddess. And I want to give her our prayers as close to her as I possibly can.

Player: Tess...

Tess: Please, [Player]... Rid the tower of monsters for me!

Player: All right. I'll do it. I'll vanquish the monsters inside the Mana Tower!

Tess: Thanks, [Player].

Player: Well, I'm off!

(The player heads to the Mana Tower.)

Player: Let's rid the Mana Tower of monsters.

(The player slays all the monster.)

Player: I did it! the Mana Tower is free of monsters once again! Now Tess can come and pray here safely. I've got to tell her!

(The player returns to the Mana Village.)

Tess: [Player]!

Player: I did it, Tess! The monsters in the Mana Tower are gone!

Tess: Are they really? Oh, [Player], thank you! Now I can pray there again!

Player: You sure can.

Tess: Here, this is for you. It's not much, but I hope you find it useful.

~Rewarded with Knight's Medallion / Moonstone Tiara / Redmoon Horn / Mage's Gloves.~

Player: Thanks, Tess.

A Valuable Watch

(The player pays a visit to Millionaire at the Golden Goods.)

Millionaire: Can I help you...find anything...

Player: What's the matter? Are you all right?

Millionaire: Last night...a burglar broke into the shop.

Player: A burglar? In a junk pile like this?

Millionaire: Junk pile? Watch it! I can refuse service to anyone!

Player: Oh, sorry, sorry. So, what's missing?

Millionaire: All the money in the safe, and a watch.

Player: All you money? That's terrible!

Millionaire: Money is not what matters.

Player: What?

Millionaire: You can always make money, but that what is irreplaceable!

Player: Oh, that's right. You were rich before all thi (But that watch must really be worth a lot to make him this sad over losing it.)

Millionaire: [Player]!

Player: Hm?

Millionaire: The burglar escaped into the Mana Tower. I need you to catch him and bring my precious watch back to me!

Player: What?!

Millionaire: I'm offering a big reward! Please?

Player: Oh, all right. I'll go fetch it for you.

Millionaire: You will?

Player: Of course. You've been a big help to me, you know.

Millionaire: Thank you, [Player]!

Player: Well, I'm off!

(The player heads to the Mana Tower.)

Player: Let's retrieve the millionaire's watch.

(During their trip into the tower, the player spots an Imp scurring at their sight. The player retrieves an item dropped from it.)

~Obtained Old Watch.~

Player: I did it! I got the watch! Hmmm... that fat cat was awfully sad, so I was expecting a real work of art. But this is just and old, worn-out pocket watch! Well, at any rate... I can't wait to see the reward after getting this back to him!

(The player returns to Millionaire.)

Player: Here you go!

Millionaire: Oh! Thanks, Ferrik! You are a lifesaver! A real hero!

Player: I was expecting something more...expensive-looking.

Millionaire: This watch belonged to a friend of minewho died in the cataclysm ten years ago. Even though the thing itself is worthless, the memories it evokes hold immesurable worth in my heart.

Player: Is that so...

Millionaire: Well, I promised a reward, so here it is!

~Received payment of 300 lucre.~

Player: What? That's all? You just said it held immeasurable worth in your heart!

Millionaire: You can't measure the worth of memories. So, I think ten percent of the price of the watch is more than enough.

Player: You've got to be kidding!

Millionaire: That's the way things work, kid.

Player: Aw!

The Benevodon of Wind

(The player pays a visit to Jinni in the Silver Mermaid.)

Jinn: It must be tough being the sword's chosen one.

Player: Yeah, but I'm doing my best.

Jinn: I wish I could assist you somehow...

Player: Well, I'm glad just to hear you say that.

Jinn: Wait... I believe Dangaard might be willing to help.

Player: Dan who?

Jinn: He's the benevodon of wind. The mana surge turned him into a malevodon, but you returned him to his true self.

Player: The benevodon of wind, eh... Well, maybe he could give me some helpful clues.

Jinn: Dangaard the Lofty now dwells inside the Mana Tower. Why don't you pay him a visit?

Player: All right, I think I'll go seem him!

Jinn: Do give him my very best regards.

Player: Will do. Well, I'm off!

(The player returns to the Mana Tower.)

Player: Let's go talk to the Benevodon of wind.

(The player ascends to the tower's top floor. A spirits comes flying before him.)

Player: You must be Dangaard!

Dangaard: Yes, I remember you. What do you want?

Player: I want you to tell me more about what's happening to our world.

Dangaard: Very well, what knowledge do you seek?

Player: Tell me what the Sword of Mana is for! (If the player has selected "The Holy Sword")

Dangaard: It was bequeathed unto this world by the mother goddess. As it returned me to my original form, it has the power to make all that is wrong right again.

Player: To make right again...

Dangaard: But you cannot wield the Sword's true power. For that, you need the help of another. Another? Like who? More I cannot say. You must find the answer on your own.

(Dangaard drops a sparkling item near the player.)

Player: Thanks! I learned a lot.

Dangaard: Let not the burden of fate weight you down. Fight bravely, son of man!

~Picked up Ventilex.~

Player: Bye, Dangaard!
