Bon Voyage, also known as Dr. Bowow, Cannon Brothers, Von Boyage, Professor Bomb or the Professor, is a recurring character archetype in the Mana series.

Background[edit]

These eccentric and often hirsute men, as their name often suggests, are the adventurers' go-to for travel advice — or just about any other gadgets a party might require. Their methods may be questionable and their requests outlandish, but given the time, space, and tools to practice their craft, they are highly reliable allies, even if a bit long-winded.

History[edit]

Final Fantasy Adventure[edit]

Main article: The Professor

Known as Dr. Bowow or just the Professor, the researcher and mechanical genius resides in Ish. It was he who built Marcy 50 years before the events of the story to investigate the ancient Dime Tower. By the time Sumo arrives in Ish, he and his chocobo mount are gravely wounded and spend several days in town to recuperate. Taking a shine to the bird, the Professor replaces their shattered legs with a mechanized set that doubles as a jet-ski on water, granting the renewed "Chocobot" the ability to launch from piers and cross open ocean.

Secret of Mana[edit]

Main article: Cannon Man

The Cannon Men, also known as Cannon Brothers, are identical set of people operating the various Cannon Travel centers of the world. For a small fee, the party can use this unusual mode of transportation to travel long distances in a flash. Cannon Men will refuse service if any ghosts are in the party.

Trials of Mana[edit]

Main article: La Famille Von

Von Boyage is an eccentric inventor living with her sister Von Soir in Maia. He meets with the heroes during chapter I where he brags about cannon travel being a revolutionary way for transportation. The bridge in Stonesplit Gap is destroyed by Altenish troops, the party has no choice but to rely on his cannon to reach Valsena. The kooky scientist must first get Nitromyte for his invention to work and tells the party to fetch some from the dwarves.

Later on, the heroes meet his brother Von Jour in Valsena to get back to Maia after finishing their errand in town. They finally encounter the last member of the family, Mercie, in Heavensway when they need to head back to Beiser during chapter II.

Visions of Mana[edit]

Main article: Von Boyage (Visions of Mana)

Once more, Von Boyage is a scholar and inventor. He works in the Log'grattzo Dark Archives, wherein he has learned a multitude of myths and legends while collecting what otherwise appears to be useless junk. He will give the convoy a Giant's Fork to prop up a wobbly beam in place of the Shade Sight vessel. Later, he sends the party on an errand to fetch the components for a Corepedo to stun Daelophos.

Legend of Mana[edit]

Main article: Professor Bomb (Legend of Mana)
“The leading pioneer of Golem development, who toils in a small laboratory in the Junkyard. Also a woman-chaser.”
In-game Encyclopedia

Professor Bomb is a recurring character in the Mana series, beginning from Legend of Mana. 58 years of age, Professor Bomb is the leading pioneer of Golem development, and tinkers with his craft in a laboratory based in the depths of the Junkyard.

Sword of Mana[edit]

Main article: Professor Bomb (Sword of Mana)

Professor Bomb appears at armories scattered around the world after the protagonist confronts the Dark Lord at Granz Castle. He can shoot heroes in multiple locations with his cannon for free. He cries out his name upon igniting his cannon and claims to be the armory specialist.

Children of Mana[edit]

While Professor Bomb does not physically appear in the game, he is mentioned several times in the game as being a brilliant inventor. His research on gems allowed him to conceive the Gem Frame whom he gave to King Watts to test it out. His pupils, the Bomb Brothers, erected a stand in Mana Village where they can sell and give advice to the player about gems.
