“Lots of penguins fell into the lake and their cap'n was thrown in there by a turtle after being changed into stone! Penguins can swim, but stone can't! Was the cap'n okay? What a scary, scary story.”

The Gorgon Eye is a quest in Legend of Mana.

Premise[edit]

While visiting Lake Kilma, the main character finds Cap'n Tusk and a bunch of pirate penguins worrying about their scouts taking so long to come back. The walrus captain fears that the Faeries might have wiped them out. As the protagonist introduces him/herself, the pirate penguins ask him/her for a password. Answering "What?" makes the crew giddy, but Cap'n Tusk replies that he is not a member, despite having guessed correctly. he then orders his crew to get back to the ship before the Faeries get a hold of them. Exploring further down the road reveals curious stone statues bearing strong resemblance to the pirate penguins. The protagonist eventually rescue an elderly turtle having been rolled upside down. The creature introduces himself as Tote and tells him that this was the work of the pirates as they trampled him on their way to the Faerie treasure. He then asks the main character if he can see the Faeries, a replies that they only reveal themselves to those who threaten them. he then casts a spell to the hero so he/she can see them. Doing so make three sprites appear, on telling the hero that they don't even have treasure, and another saying that the master of the lake can petrify anything just by staring at it. The latter one adds that Faeries can do the same with the Stone Eye since they are the only one who can use it. After continuing deeper into the woods, the protagonist encounters Cap 'n Tusk and his crew, urging them to head back to the ship. The remaining pirates can't seem to put their mind to rest as long as their crewmates are petrified, but the chief's orders are to be observed.

The entire crew is seen again jumping of a cliff by the lake, as a Faeries tries to coerce Cap'n Tusk to do the same for the sake of their master. The walrus tries to reason with the sprite, but the latter fires a magical beam that pushes the old captain down the precipice. Tote approaches the cliff, making the Faerie fly away. The elder turtle confides in the protagonist that he might not return once he jumps down and must decide for himself whether saving them is worth the risk. The main character decides to leap down and is quickly followed by Tote. Now at the base of the lake, they find the remaining pirate penguins bemoaning their freshly pertrified boss. Tote reveals that humans believe that the master of the lake hides a great treasure while the Faeries think their will die if their master die. The great turtle sage assures the crew that both of them a myths. This fact angers the pirate penguins who demand that Tote help them uncurse their captain, to which the old folk replies that they could serve as bait while the main character disposes of the master of the lake. Seeing that no penguin wants to form a clear answer, Tote flings the rocky captain's corpse into the water, to the crew's utter shock. They all dive into the lake to rescue their boss, making the Gorgon Eye appear. The old turtle lets the protagonist handle the threat. Slaying the spiny beast undo the petrification, making Cap'n Tusk and all his crewmen safe and sound. They give a Firefly Lamp Artifact as thanks to the hero.

Solution[edit]

Place the Stone Eye AF in the space directly above the Tower of Leires to create Lake Kilma. Enter Lake Kilma.

Talk to the penguins and answer them with “What?”. Then, head to area 16 on the map of Lake Kilma to find and defeat the Gorgon’s Eye.
