The Jackal, also known as Spikey Tiger, Razorback, Petit Jackal or Goldroot Jackal is a recurring boss in the Mana series. Usually taking the form of a large yellow striped tiger, it sports sharp claws and teeth to maul their prey. In Final Fantasy Adventure and its subsequent remakes, the Jackal has saberteeth and stands in an upright position, whereas its Secret of Mana form sports larges spikes on its back and is quadrupedal. It also has a white underbelly that extends up to its jaw.
While the Jackal is usually portrayed as a physical attacker, the Secret of Mana iteration has shown the large cat to possess Fire magic. Its perferred method for dealing damage remains biting, scratching, and sometimes rolling around frantically when possessing spikes on its back. Its aggressive nature depends on the installment, going from almost harmless in Final Fantasy Adventure to ruthless in Secret of Mana.
Appearances

- Main article: Jackal (Adventures of Mana)
The Jackal is the first boss encountered in Final Fantasy Adventure and in the Mana series. It is one of the exotic beasts captured by the Dark Lord to brawl against his slaves in the Battle Arena for his own enjoyment. Sumo must defeat it in order to escape Glaive and find Bogard the Gemma Knight as entrusted by his late friend Will. It goes down in a few sword hits.
In the original Game Boy version, the Jackal follows a W walking pattern and doesn’t attack the hero directly.
In Adventures of Mana, the Jackal follows Sumo while flailing its paws in front of it, then backs up when needed. Defeating it will reward the player with the Jackal Jaw-breaker achievement.
Secret of Mana
- Main article: Spikey Tiger (Secret of Mana)
The Spikey Tiger is Elinee's pet and is fought in her castle deep within the Haunted Forest. The old hag pins the party against the fearsome tiger after sending a brainwashed Dyluck to her master Thanatos. The feline boasts impressive strength and speed, often stumping inexperienced players.
The Blue Spike is a palette swap of this boss and is encountered inside the Gold Tower.
Players can buy the Tiger Suit, Tiger Two-Piece and Tiger Cap in Northtown.
Sword of Mana
- Main article: Jackal (Sword of Mana)
The Jackal returns as the first boss of Sword of Mana. It functions virtually the same as in Adventures of Mana and serves the same purpose.
Heroes of Mana
- Main article: Razorback (Heroes of Mana)
The Razorback is an enemy unit in Heroes of Mana.
Rise of Mana
- Main article: Petit Jackal (Rise of Mana)
The Petit Jackal is fought during the prologue in Mt. Manten. While searching for a way to climb back the Mana waterfall before it's too late, the feral creature lunges toward the duo's familiar, temporarily incapacitating it in the process. The Angel and Demon manage to defeat it and rescue their familiar.
The Petit Jackal can also be recruited as a Monster Pet.
Echoes of Mana
- Main article: Goldroot Jackal
The Goldroot Jackal appears during chapter 1 of season 2. Alerted by the sudden earthquake at Bogard's cabin, the party manages to locate its source at Glaive Castle. The whole area is sprawling with roots of the False Tree. They are attacked by the creature, itself possessed by the roots menacing the Echo.
