The Black Rabite, also known as Dark Rabite or Thanatos Rabite is a elusive, powerful Rabite species and a recurring boss in the Mana series. Despite its only outwardly difference being the color of its fur compared to the more common Rabite, its strength is usually unmatched by all its rabbit-like brethren. It is frequently fought as an optional boss rivaling the final opponent in difficulty.
Debuting in Trials of Mana, the Black Rabite was able to use an impressive magic arsenal, casting pretty much every single magic spell in the game. Furthermore, it was able to counter every single Class Strike and moves thrown at it, making the battle even harder for unaware players. Whenever its HP would go below 50%, the dark menace would start turning its prey into Moogles. Destroying the formidable rodent would leave the player with the Moogle Pin and the Rabite Trapper achivement in the updated remake. Other installments depicted the Black Rabite in various ways, usually as a powerful and rare monster.
Appearances[edit]
Trials of Mana[edit]
- Main article: Black Rabite (Trials of Mana)
In the original Super Famicom game and in Collection of Mana, the Black Rabite lurks in a secret path deep within Dragonsmaw and therefore can only be fought if Duran or Angela is the main character. Trapping the party members in a small room, the foul rabite can summon Demons at will should the heroes use their more advanced class strikes. Any magic usage could be reciprocated to the caster as well. Defeating the beast woul reward the player with the Moogle Pin, but only if the Black Rabite was the last standing.
Trials of Mana HD[edit]
The Black Rabite can now be fought within any of the three storylines by touching a gold Rabite effigy in one of three areas relative to each story. The player would receive the Moogle Pin (rare drop), the Obsidian Power ability and the Rabite Trapper achievement as proof of defeating the dark pest. It can be re-challenged multiple times after that, but won't give any additional rewards, except for the rare drop of the Moogle Pin.
Sword of Mana[edit]

Despite not appearing as a separate entry, the humble Rabite could be defeated one 999 times to be replaced with the Dark Rabite permanently, gaining 500 HP and 100 in every stats. The "defeat 999" process produces Black/paragon upgrades of all non-boss monsters, not just Rabites.
Dawn of Mana[edit]
- Main article: Grim Rabite (Dawn of Mana)
Grim Rabites would replace their yellow brethren after Chapter 4 when Ritzia would unwillingly open the Door to Mavolia and plunge the world into darkness. Buju, Ritzia's pet rabite also became afflicted with the curse, but maintained a gentle demeanor throughout the the game's last chapter.
Heroes of Mana[edit]
- Main article: Black Rabite (Heroes of Mana)
The Black Rabite would reprise its role as a secret boss in Heroes of Mana, where it could be encountered in a bonus mission. The Black Rabite is a hidden boss in a bonus mission, but unlocking it is almost as hard as beating it. It appears in a stage that is only unlocked after beating the game on hard mode, and even then he will not appear until you have sent 999 regular rabites to their deaths throughout the game. It boasts an impressive 9,999 HP and devastating attacks.
Rise of Mana[edit]
- Main article: Black Rabite (Rise of Mana)
The Black Rabite is a recruitable Monster Pet in Rise of Mana. It could be obtained by attending the Black Rabite Advent.
Echoes of Mana[edit]
The Black Rabite made a cameo in the Trick or Treat Memory Gem. It also appeared as a Sticker. A Black Rabite Coin currency was part of the game's unused content.
