Basilisk
The Basilisk is a recurring enemy in the Mana series.
Based on a folkloric lizard and a staple creature in RPGs since the original Dungeons & Dragons, these odd bipedal reptiles with blank expressions and bulging eyeballs are usually found in later areas of the worlds they inhabit. Though seemingly harmless compared to other monsters, the basilisk has the bothersome ability to turn its victims to stone with a glance or a peck.
General Information[edit]
Physical Description[edit]
Basilisks are usually depicted as green plump reptiles with large bulging eyes harboring a perpertually blank expression. Older artwork and sprites had them only sport hind legs, but they sprouted arms starting Rise of Mana. They also have spikes on their back. They use their piercing gaze to petrify their prey.
Attributes[edit]
The reptile monster favors arid areas to roam about and thus is frequently seen in desert, but also ruins. It also frequently shows up in late-game areas in some installments.
Because of its tendency to petrify opponents, the Basilisk is shown to favor the earth element. In some games, the monster is weak to Jinn and in others, it fears Salamander or even Undine.
Variants[edit]
The Basilisk has a few notable, often stronger variants.
- The Fire Drake is a yellow Basilisk capable of breathing fire in some installments. It is weak to water attacks.
- The Dark Basilisk is a stronger variant of the regular monster in Sword of Mana. It replaces the Basilisk once the player has defeated 1,000 of them.
