The Beholder, also known as Boulder or Weepy Eye, is a recurring enemy in the Mana series. This eyeball monster was taken from the Dungeons & Dragons lore, albeit slighty altered from its original design to better fit the Mana universe. Beholders often are magically gifted rather than physically inclined.

General Information[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Earlier Beholder designs were extremely simplistic, to the point of being depicted as an eyeball with a red pupil in their Final Fantasy Adventure artwork. Subsequent releases has added a purple or blue protective eyelid often adorned with stars and gold eyelashes. Its magic often has the annoying side effect of changing the shape or appearance of their target.

Attributes[edit]

Beholders are often found within caves and ancient structures like ruins and temples. Some installment have them lurking dungeons near the end of the story.

These floating eyeballs can have an affinity with the Luna or Wisp elemental depending on the game. In turn, they often fear Shade or Dryad magic.

Variants[edit]

Beholders have a few variants to their name.

  • Peepers are green Beholders mainly appearing in Trials of Mana. They can reflect most magical damage and can cast instant death to party members.
  • The Dark Beholder is an elusive Beholder species in Sword of Mana. In replaces the regular monster once it habe been slain 1,000 times.
