Mad Mallards, also named Duck Soldiers or Duck GIs, are white-feathered ducks who appear as enemies in the Mana series. They wear a large green army helmet, which often obscure most of their face, and use a black ball flail as a weapon. Mad Mallards first appear in Final Fantasy Adventure. Mad Mallards have a stronger relative named Captain Duck, who can usually be distinguished from their blue helmet.

In Secret of Mana, Mad Mallards are able to throw Pumpkin Bombs.

General Information[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Mad Mallards are generally depicted as humanoid ducks white feathers, with more recent installments making their wings with yellow and purple tips. They typically wear an oversized green army helmet, which often obscure most of their face, and use a black ball flail as a weapon. They also sport matching army gear at the front with large tan boots. They are notable for lugging explosives at their target, but were also shown to attack with flails, knives, & darts.

In earlier depictions, Mad Mallards' plumage were entirely white and they lacked the army boots, leaving their webbed feet bare.

Attributes[edit]

In their first appearance in Final Fantasy Adventure, Mad Mallards were spotted in various biomes, such as tundra, volcano, and ruins. In subsequent releases, however, they acclimated almost exclusively to hotter environments like deserts and lava filled caves.

They have generally been associated with Salamander since then, and therefore often have a weakness to water magic attacks.

Variants[edit]

The only stronger variant available in most games for the Mad Mallard is called Captain Duck.

  • Captain Ducks are recognizable by their blue helmet. They don't really differ from their weaker counterpart aside from their larger arsenal.
  • Dark Duck GIs are dark variants of the species only appearing in Sword of Mana. As with any other dark enemies, they replace the regular monster once the player has killed 1,000 of them.

This military-clad duck is first encountered in the Cara Mountains. It has high HP and attack and can deal damage by trusting its sword at the protagonist. Colliding into it can inflict poison to the hero. The Duck Soldier is easily dealt with the swing of the Axe, giving out good experience and money. The monster can also be spotted in the Undersea Volcano, the Sealed Cave, and the Buried Ruins.

In Adventures of Mana, Duck Soldiers don’t change their behavior much.
