The Tonpole, also known as Biting Tonpole or Pakkun Tonpole, is a recurring enemy in the Mana series, introduced as minibosses in Secret of Mana and continuing through later titles as a more common enemy. They are the infant form of the Lizardon.

General Information[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Tonpoles resemble real life tadpoles with their round bodies and tail. Their bodies are bright pink with a white underbelly, and their fins and tails are colored blueish purple. Their round eyes are either wide open, giving them a bewildered expression, or close shut. They can evolve into their mature form once they have taken enough damage.

Attributes[edit]

Tonpoles prefer to live in dark, damp places, such as marshes, caverns or underground waterways. Some even thrive in colder climates.

These amphibian creatures are generally aligned with the water element and are weak against Salamander.

Variants[edit]

Tonpoles come in several stronger variants, although the Tanpole is the most commonly seen.

  • Tanpoles are stronger blue variations. They evolve into Dragodons after taking enough damage. Other than being more powerful, they don't have any other distintive traits.
  • Dark Tonpoles are powerful species of Tadpoles appearing in Sword of Mana. They replace regular Tadpoles after slaying 1,000 of them.

Appearances[edit]

The Tonpole appears as a boss in Secret of Mana. It guards the entrance to Undine and must be defeated to reach her. It doesn't attack at all, preferring hopping around the area until it sustains enough damage to transform into its true form.

Three Tadpoles are fought simultaneously inside the Ice Palace.

Trials of Mana[edit]

Tonpoles are reptile-type enemies and can be encountered in the Mekiv Caverns, Lake Kilma, and the Fieg Snowfields. They attack by body slamming their opponent and can drop Blank Eyes upon defeat. The hostile variety is colored blue instead of pink.

Pet Tonpoles can be obtained by meeting a monster egg in Luon Highway or Mekiv Caverns. Its Reptiles Synchro ability allows the player to deal extra damage to reptile enemies.

Sword of Mana[edit]

Tonpoles are reptile enemies commonly found in the Scaly Lair and the Marsh Cave. Their prime sense is Hearing and their secondary is DayViz. They like slamming their bodies on their target and spewing bubbles at them. Fortunately, they are not too tough and are easily defeated by slashing attacks.
