In Final Fantasy Adventure and its subsequent remakes, the Jackal has saberteeth and stands in an upright position, whereas its Secret of Mana form sports larges spikes on its back and is quadrupedal. It also has a white underbelly that extends up to its jaw.
While the Jackal is usually portrayed as a physical attacker, the Secret of Mana iteration has shown the large cat to possess Fire magic. Its perferred method for dealing damage remains biting, scratching, and sometimes rolling around frantically when possessing spikes on its back. Its aggressive nature depends on the installment, going from almost harmless in Final Fantasy Adventure to ruthless in Secret of Mana.
