Tor Marne, Benevodon of the Moon is a boss in Visions of Mana.

Description[edit]

“An imposing frog that reigns over Castle Cresceno. It can wax and wane into a myriad of phases and spews out star-spawn in battle. It glides gracefully through the air when it assumes its full moon form. If gazed upon directly in such a state, the Benevodon could easily be mistaken for the real thing.”
In-game description

Story[edit]

Released into Qi'Diel by a vengeful Daelophos, Tor Marne, a colossal frog, toys with the minds of its prey from the throne of the derelict Castle Cresceno beyond the gates of Etaern. As the parish is restored, its citizens as well as Val's convoy (barring himself and Morley) are driven mad in myriad ways. The convoy must enlist aid from Luna if it is to challenge its tormentor and restore sanity to the afflicted.

Inspiration[edit]

Tor Marne takes after the Jin Chan, or the Money Frog, a mythical creature found in East Asian and Taoist mythology. A pale yet immortal three legged toad, the Jin Chan is said to live on the moon, and manages over the yin aspects of longevity, specifically concerning wealth and immortality. The Jin Chan is frequently depicted as sitting on a pile of golden coins, bears jewel like protrusions on its back in the shape of the Big Dipper, and bears a pearl like crest upon its head, which every night grows and falls off, said to be a pill that confers immortality. It only appears to the world upon days of a full moon. According to legend, the Jin Chan was once a maelfic creature that greedily robbed, stole, and pillaged for its greedy love of treasure, and equally was a voracious beast, feeding upon both men and animal alike, making its lair in a grotto near a prominent village, emanating a toxic miasma to guard its keep. The sage Liu Hai heard of the Jin Chan's atrocities and embarked on a quest to stop its evil reign, engaging with it in an epic battle. Upon defeating the Jin Chan, Liu Hai took compassion upon its misery, where the beast became his loyal companion and vowed to help humanity.
