Watts is a supporting character in Legend of Mana.

Background[edit]

Watts is involved in a few different side quests in the game, but he is worth pursuing as he teaches the character Blacksmithing, an art that allows them to assemble their own armour and weapons. In contrast to many of his other incarnations, Watts is considerably younger.

History[edit]

Legend of Mana[edit]

Watts Drops the Hammer[edit]

While visiting Watts's Shop in the Ulkan Mines, the protagonist learns that the blacksmith lost his hammer and thus cannot work. He asks the main character to be on the lookout for his precious tool. They find the hammer in the Digger's Hideout not far from his workshop. The hero makes their way back to a cranky Watts who is nonetheless happy about his predicament.

The Path of the Blacksmith[edit]

The protagonist stumbles into Watts in the Workshops while exploring their estate. The dwarf declares that he's done working on the smithy and takes the opportunity to instruct the main character about the weapon forging. The hero can spend all day learning about crafting techniques. The blacksmith gives them a piece of Menos Bronze to start out.

Mine Your Own Business[edit]

Bud confides in the protagonist that he wants to see the Seven Wisdoms and would like to tag along. The duo then travels to the Ulkan Mines and stumble into Pokiehl, the Messenger of the Cosmic Truth. He mentions that his master is away, probably mining deep within the tunnels. The party decides to look for the blacksmith and venture into the depths of the cavern. They finally spot Watts extracting mineral off a wall. A giant monster causes a rumble that scares the dwarf away, leaving the protagonist and Bud to handle the menace. Once they've cleared out the area, Watts return, scolding the party about the dangers lurking around. The scene transitions to Watts's Shop, where Pokiehl tells of the blacksmith's heroic exploits and gives the main character the Moon Mirror artifact.

Niccolo's Business Unusual: Part 4[edit]

Niccolo is seen wandering near the Outdoor Fruit Parlor in Geo and tells the main character he's got lots of goods to sell. He wants to visit Watts in the Ulkan Mines, stating the secret of sales is sincerity. The player and the rabbit merchant finds the dwarf busy with daily chores as he asks them to come back later. He leaves precious Laurent Silver in different places without Watts knowing and leave his workshop. Niccolo returns, claiming he's here to collect his payment of 30,000 lucre's worth of Silver he left earlier. The dwarf tells the swindling merchant he doesn't see any, but Niccolo replies he must have used it up without noticing. The blacksmith curses the peddler, but the rabbit rationalizes saying if he doesn't have the funds, he must work it off. Watts shouts he lost his wallet inside the mines. As Niccolo is about to take some of Watts's weapons, the blacksmith tells him he'll make a new wallet out of Gator Skin and pay an extra 10,000 for the material. Should the protagonist bring him a Gator Skin, Watts will make himself a new wallet and offers to pay a total of 40,000 lucre. However, the dwarf discovers his new wallet is empty, which prompts Niccolo to call him an idiot. Watts accuses the peddler and the protagonist of taking the money when they gave him the material. Fed up with his insane remarks, Niccolo helps himself by taking some of Watts's weapons and tells him he'll be back when he's low on materials.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Personality[edit]

Devoted to his craft as a master blacksmith, Watts diverts very little of his attention to the affairs of the world outside of forging and maintaining the repertoire of equipment in his workshop. This fact alone is responsible for him to be a rather absent-minded person, where he is known to readily misplace a variety of his personal possessions, ranging from his wallet to even the hammer that he wields to perform the bulk of his work.

Watts has also been proven to be rather dull-witted, a fact that is made especially evident in Niccolo's Business Unusual: Part 4; this quest see him foolishly believing that crafting a brand new wallet to replace the one he had misplaced will somehow in turn cause the lucre that he requires to repay his debt to Niccolo materialize.
