Esmeralda is a major ally character in Legend of Mana and a recurring character in the Mana series.
Background[edit]
Esmeralda is the Jumi of Emerald. Like all of her kin, she was born of in the Bejeweled City. Under the command of Diana, the Jumi of Diamond, the clan waged war against the Deathbringer's army and used Florina as her tears would replenish their ranks indefinitely. Later on, following the tragic hunting of the Jumis during the search of the seventh Mana Stone, most of the jewel folk died by lessening their energy flow through their core to protect the secrets of their clan. Mages were also after the Jumi's cores due to alleged rumors about them harboring rare mystical proprieties. The remaining Jumi population left their homeland of Etancel, the Bejewled City and concealed their identities to the best of their abilities.
A flashback in the Bejeweled City reveals that the young lady learned of her sisters staying behind to protect Diana on Rubens's orders while he looks for Lady Blackpearl following Florina's disappearance. Esmeralda fled to the magic city of Geo, where she attended the Academy of Magic. She wanted to become a Jumi Knight since she couldn't shed tears and because her sisters thought of her as childish. Some time prior to the events of the game, Esmeralda's sisters were mercilessly killed by the Deathbringer's army which greatly left her distraught. She went searching for their core around Geo ever since.

The Lucky Clover[edit]
The protagonist and Elazul found The Jumi of Emerald along her tutor Nunuzac wandering in the middle of Geo. Suspecting she might be a Jumi like him, the Lapis Knight urged the main character to locate her inside the city. They find her attending class at the Academy of Magic, where she tells both of them to come back at the Library on Gnome or Undine day. There, Elazul is shocked to hear her teacher Nunzac berating her and calling her Mudstone. She replies her core is worthless and reveals that she is looking for her sisters. Later on, she asks the main character for a favor and to meet her at the library. She explains there that Florina, the only Jumi who could heald, wad kidnapped after the Jumi left Etancel, the Bejeweled City. She was separated from her sisters amidst the chaos and Esmeralda stayed under the care of Nunuzac until a Knight would come to her. Elazul asks her if she wants him to be her knight, but her and Nunuzac reply that one Guardian is enough for a Jumi Knight, since the Lapis Knight already has Pearl. She then asks the protagonist to become her Knight, to which they accept.
They go look together for her sisters' cores around the city while Elazul stays at the jewelry store. While visiting the boutique, Esmeralda asks the owner Alex if he happens to have a core similar to her in stock. The Jumi of Emerald reveals that her sisters were killed by the Deathbringer's army with only their core left behind. Sould her could get a hold of them, she might bring them back with tears of healing. Alex claims he doesn't sell Jumi cores, with a relieved Esmeralds commenting on her believing jewelry stores being Jumi morgues. She exits the store and head back to the Academy, where she manages to locate a core inside a teacher's office. She then finds the second core in the storage room below the Palace of the Arts. Diana, the Jumi of Diamond, gives it to her after claiming that Jumis are fated to extinction since none of them can cry anymore. Esmeralda denies this fact, saying she won't give up. Diana reveals she had told the Jewel Hunter to claim her core and urges the Jumi of Emerald to take her sister's core and leave. They find the last core hidden by Teapo inside a plant in the inn's lobby. The living Teapot is upset at first, buy tears up after hearing the Jumi's tragic tale.
Upon leaving the inn, Esmeralda discovers a letter on the pavement from the Jewel Hunter, claiming that her core and her sisters' will be hers. The young lady hurries back to the Academy for safety, tell the main character to tell Elazul to be careful too. Upon hearing this, the Lapis Knight presses the hero to get back to Esmerald at once. On the road, they cross paths with Inspector Boyd who shouts that the young Jumi of Emerald is not here and must have been taken hostage by Sandra. They briefly find her back in the storage room near Diana, but she immediately disappears. Diana teleports both of them to the battle arena, where they face off against a Jewel Beast. Sadly, they are too late to save Esmeralda whose core is stolen by Sandra before they can stop her.
Interlude[edit]
In the Underworld, Esmeralda can be seen pacing in her room, talking about why she argued with Diana about how Sandra told her that Diana stole the Teardrop Crystal.
Teardrop Crystal[edit]
While ascending the Bejewled City, the player is shown a flashback of Esmeralda speaking of her intent to study at the Magic Academy in Geo to Rubens and her sisters.
Esmeralda is revived by the protagonist's tears in the climax of the Teardrop Crystal quest along with every other slain Jumi. Together, they cry tears of crystal, summoning a great storm to undo the petrifying process on the main character. They do this with their tears, despite the unknown amount of life force it takes from their bodies. After a scene, the Hero is revived.

She asks them for lessons, but Blainchet reminds the group of more pressing matters. Esmeralda asks Blainchet if Sierra and Larc are also wolfkins, but he replies he just wants to help them.
