Pearl, also known as Lady Blackpearl, is a major ally character in Legend of Mana and a recurring character in the Mana series.
Background[edit]
Pearl is part of the Jumis, a race of supernaturual humanoids born in the Bejeweled City. Under the command of Diana, the Jumi of Diamond, the clan waged war against the Deathbringer's army and used Florina, the Clarius of the Jumi to restore the fallen soldiers as her tears would replenish their ranks indefinitely. Later on, following the tragic hunting of the Jumis during the search of the seventh Mana Stone, most of the jewel folk died by lessening their energy flow through their core to protect the secrets of their clan. Mages were also after the Jumi's cores due to alleged rumors about them harboring rare mystical proprieties. The remaining Jumi population left their homeland of Etancel, the Bejewled City and concealed their identities to the best of their abilities.
Pearl was originally know as Lady Blackpearl and was the Jumi Knight of Florina. She left her duty early on to search for the Sword of Mana and was replaced by Alexandra as the newly appointed Knight to the Clarius. She met with Alexandra some time after leaving the city, and had a violent argument with her concerning the fate of the Jumi and Florina's role. The Black knight tells her that the Clarius should remain in the city and shoulder her duties but Alexandrite refuses to cooperate, opting for her selfish reasonings rather than to observe the traditions. She tells Lady Blackpearl of Florina's whereabouts and the latter replies that she must consult with Diana the ruler of the Jumis to revoke her position as the Clarius. However, Alexandrite believes Lady Blackpearl to blindly follow orders and to have no shine to her black core, just like every other members of their clan. She damages her core with her cards before leaving, turning Lady Blackpearl into Pearl and wiping out her memories. The amnesiac Jumi was found by Elazul and swore to be her knight thereafter.

She is about to strike when she is interrupted by Wanderer. The Niccolo tries to warn them of the dangers of this cavern, but the opponents continue to brawl. All this shouting attracts a mighty ape whom the party must fight together to survive. The ensuing battle creates a cave-in, forcing the adventurers to escape the premises. All of them part ways in the end.

'Is there some you are bound to protect? If so, stay with them always. That is where I failed.'
'Those who cry for Jumi turn to stone. You'd best be careful.'
'Every Jumi's core is different. Mine is black pearl, Elazul's is Lapis Lazuli.'
'Jumi only die if our core is damaged. There is no natural limit on our lives.'
'There was once a time long ago when I was a Jumi Knight.'
'Elazul? Looking for me? Doubt it. Likely it was Pearl.'
'There's a jewel hunter... Er. Nevermind. Just be sure to keep an eyeone anything you'd rather not have stolen.'
'Florina... I wonder where you are right now...'
'You look well. As for me, I'm much the same.'
Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal[edit]
General information[edit]
Physical appearance[edit]

Pearl is a young lady with long blonde hair in a ragged style and has loose ringlets at the edge of her hair and green eyes. She wears a white dress with red trim, red cuffs, and pearl jewels. On her chest is a big white pearl which is actually her Jumi core of pearl and she wears white shoes.
In the anime, Pearl's hair are golden blonde and her eyes are blue green. The underskirt of her white dress from her main outfit are dark gray with gray rounded mosaic designs.
As Lady Blackpearl, she has hazel eyes and wears a beige knight dress with black fitted sleeves and with beige gauntlets along with black gloves, black fitted tights and beige and black heeled boots. She also wears a beige short mantle and underneath it was white with red triangle designs adorned with black pearl jewels. She also has a black pearl on her forehead and has a Jumi core of black pearl at the center of her chest and wields her signature hammer. The underskirt beneath her knight dress at the back are black and red.
In the anime and like Pearl, she has golden blonde hair and was styled in a single large ringlet at the edge and red violet eyes instead of hazel. Her knight armor is white and her short white mantle had green collar adorned with black pearl jewels, her gauntlets are white. Her knee-high portion of her heeled boots are also white and underskirt are revealed to have green and red designs instead of black and red.
Personality[edit]
Owing to their differing roles in the Jumi society, with Pearl functioning as a Guardian and Lady Blackpearl functioning as a Knight, the personalities of both individuals naturally juxtapose each other. While Pearl is compassionate, docile, and abashed, Lady Blackpearl, by contrast, has a warrior's spirit and is markedly more confident, proud, and courageous. In this regard, the gemstones that compose each individual's core symbolically represent the antithesis inherent in their personalities; the pearl, for one, symbolizes purity and innocence, appositely reflecting Pearl's docile naivety. The black pearl, conversely, is the result of the flawless, untainted pearl being subjected to the taint of warfare and bloodshed, therefore encapsulating chaos; aptly reflecting the brazen love of fighting that defines Blackpearl.
Pearl's timid nature is unveiled right from the beginning when she is first introduced in The Lost Princess; in response to Elazul harshly berating her for wandering off without him, her response sees her frantically apologizing to him for being absent-minded, without so much as desiring to defend herself.
Blackpearl starkly contrasts her pure alter-ego's mellow personality; while Pearl is timid, shy, and easily subdued, Blackpearl is brash, confident, and overpowering in her countenance. Her response to Elazul's demand for Pearl to be returned to him in Two Pearls reveal as much, where she noticeably adopts a register that sheds Pearl's hesitance (absence of ellipsis) and is instead definably cold, defiant and intimidating. This mannerism portrayed by Blackpearl also bespeaks the pride that she harbors as the Knight of the exalted Florina. While this pride does serve as a moot point in instances like these which answer to her need for her to keep up her guard when regarding those she does not trust, it has proven to be a flaw as well; even though she is aware that locating the Sword of Mana is a futile one, her pride causes her to obstinately continue with the mission, all the while remaining hopelessly blind towards the fact that her Guardian Florina is ailing.
