Pearl, also known as Lady Blackpearl, is a major ally character in Legend of Mana and a recurring character in the Mana series.
Background[edit]
Pearl is part of the Jumis, a race of supernaturual humanoids born in the Bejeweled City. Under the command of Diana, the Jumi of Diamond, the clan waged war against the Deathbringer's army and used Florina, the Clarius of the Jumi to restore the fallen soldiers as her tears would replenish their ranks indefinitely. Later on, following the tragic hunting of the Jumis during the search of the seventh Mana Stone, most of the jewel folk died by lessening their energy flow through their core to protect the secrets of their clan. Mages were also after the Jumi's cores due to alleged rumors about them harboring rare mystical proprieties. The remaining Jumi population left their homeland of Etancel, the Bejewled City and concealed their identities to the best of their abilities.
Pearl was originally know as Lady Blackpearl and was the Jumi Knight of Florina. She left her duty early on to search for the Sword of Mana and was replaced by Alexandra as the newly appointed Knight to the Clarius. She met with Alexandra some time after leaving the city, and had a violent argument with her concerning the fate of the Jumi and Florina's role. The Black knight tells her that the Clarius should remain in the city and shoulder her duties but Alexandrite refuses to cooperate, opting for her selfish reasonings rather than to observe the traditions. She tells Lady Blackpearl of Florina's whereabouts and the latter replies that she must consult with Diana the ruler of the Jumis to revoke her position as the Clarius. However, Alexandrite believes Lady Blackpearl to blindly follow orders and to have no shine to her black core, just like every other members of their clan. She damages her core with her cards before leaving, turning Lady Blackpearl into Pearl and wiping out her memories. The amnesiac Jumi was found by Elazul and swore to be her knight thereafter.

The Lost Princess[edit]
Pearl is found deep inside the Mekiv Caverns by Elazul and the protagonist, as he was looking for her after she wandered on her own. She gives the Stone Eye artifact to the player before heading out.
The Flame of Hope[edit]
Pearl is mentioned by Elazul if he's in the hero's party after encountering Rubens. Due to Ruben's pessimistic behavior, Elazul tells the main character not to tell Pearl about Rubens otherwise her current condition might get worsen.
The Looking-Glass Tower[edit]
Pearl has gone to the Tower of Leires where she feel something luring her inside. As her and the protagonist reach the Room of Fate on the top floor, she explains that her past shall be revealed there. Inside, however, she sees an alternate self staring at her, and is immediately attacked by an Iron Centaur. Pearl rejoins with Elazul after the brawl, who urges her to get outside. His partner declines as she feels so close to remembering something. The Jumi Knight obliges and asks the protagonist to keep her safe with their life while he waits at the entrance. The two of them quickly reunite and leave the place unscathed.
The Lucky Clover[edit]
Pearl appears when she runs into the bar in Domina and bumps into Elazul and the protagonist when they leave. She asks if they are going somewhere and when they answer yes, she says she doesn't want to be left alone. Elazul argues that a bar is a safe place for her until he agrees with the Hero/Heroine that she will stay at their place. She stays at their home for the remainder of the event. After they failed to save Esmeralda, Pearl was napping on the table and feeling comfortable having a family around her. It makes Elazul not tell her about Esmeralda's death, for having her not be sad and worried.
Cosmo[edit]
Pearl is kidnapped by Sandra and dragged inside Mekiv Caverns. When her Jumi Knight and the protagonist come rescue her, they see Sandra threatening the Jumi of Pearl to rip her core out should she doesn't shed tears of crystal. Elazul tries to rescue her, but his core gets scratched by Sandra's throwing cards in the process. Pearl replies that she cannot cry, but muster the strength to transform into Lady Blackpearl, frightening the Jewel Hunter. Lady Blackpearl asks if Florina is still alive, to which Sandra replies that she should ask her herself, before disappearing.
Two Pearls[edit]
The Jumi of Pearl has gone to the Room of Fate on the highest floor of the Tower of Leires. Despite his injury, the bedridden Elazul dashes to her side only to discover her doppleganger from the cave. The Black Knight informs her goal is to reach the Stratum of Clarius, becoming the new Clarius of the Jumi and will give her life for all her brethren. Pearl states she doesn't want to die, but Lady Blackpearl urges her to abide by the rules. Elazul defends his Guardian by crossing swords and defeating the Black Knight, but the latter claims she will return in due time.
Alexandrite[edit]
Elazul and Pearl agree to meet Diana in Geo. Her petrified body located below the Palace of the Arts, the party gathers the keys of the heart and reanimate her body by doing a partner ceremony. Elazul explains that Diana has turned her body to stone in order to avoid being killed by Sandra. The Jumi of Diamond reveals that Jumi people were once able to cry tears of crystal at will, healing other races at the expanse of their own lives. However, they adapted to refrain from weeping and keep this power to themselves. Sandra erupts into the scene, claiming Diana used Florina as her scapegoat for shedding tears and rips her core in the process moments before leaving.
Fluorite[edit]
Pearl appears in Florina's dreams both as her and Lady Blackpearl. As the Black Knight, she sneers at Elazul upon learning he has no one to protect has a Jumi Knight, believing he let her Guardian die by his own incompetence. The Lapis Knight wants to become his Jumi Knight but Blackpearl refuses, stating she's become a Knight with a core of darkness and that Pearl is no more. She is finally seen confronting Sandra, claiming she is here to bring her to the Underworld. Blackpearl is hit with a heatstroke and collapses on the hot sand. She transforms into Pearl as Elazul escorts her to safety.
Teardrop Crystal[edit]
Elazul and Pearl have been investigating around Geo and meet with the main character to share information. They claim nobody knows who Alex the jeweler really is or his whereabouts. After searching the boutique, they find Florina inside Pandora's Box and the Clarius reverts Pearl back into her Lady Blackpearl form. She then asks her to answer some questions, to which the Black Knight reveals her past as Florina's original Knight and Alexandra taking her place. The Clarius claims she will heal Sandra's troubled heart, but both Blackpearl and Elazul wish to defeat her instead.
Depending on who the player chooses to partner with, Elazul or Lady Blackpearl will follow the hero to the Bejeweled City to confront the Jewel Hunter. There, Sandra reveals her true identity as the Jumi of Alexandrite and her scheme to use her master's powers to fuse a thousand Jumi cores to save Forina. The 999th core eaten by the Lord of Jewels will either be Elazul or Blackpearl depending on the character previously chosen. Alexandra will sacrifice her core for the Lord to reach full power, but the main character defeats it and sheds tears of crystals to revive every Jumi people. Deeply touched by this selfless act, Elazul asks every Jumi to cry to bring them back to life. The Lapis Knight is lastly seen escorting Pearl and the hero back to their home safe and sound.

Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal[edit]
General information[edit]
Physical appearance[edit]
Pearl is a young lady with long blonde hair in a ragged style and has loose ringlets at the edge of her hair and green eyes. She wears a white dress with red trim, red cuffs, and pearl jewels. On her chest is a big white pearl which is actually her Jumi core of pearl and she wears white shoes.
In the anime, Pearl's hair are golden blonde and her eyes are blue green. The underskirt of her white dress from her main outfit are dark gray with gray rounded mosaic designs.
As Lady Blackpearl, she has hazel eyes and wears a beige knight dress with black fitted sleeves and with beige gauntlets along with black gloves, black fitted tights and beige and black heeled boots. She also wears a beige short mantle and underneath it was white with red triangle designs adorned with black pearl jewels. She also has a black pearl on her forehead and has a Jumi core of black pearl at the center of her chest and wields her signature hammer. The underskirt beneath her knight dress at the back are black and red.
In the anime and like Pearl, she has golden blonde hair and was styled in a single large ringlet at the edge and red violet eyes instead of hazel. Her knight armor is white and her short white mantle had green collar adorned with black pearl jewels, her gauntlets are white. Her knee-high portion of her heeled boots are also white and underskirt are revealed to have green and red designs instead of black and red.
Personality[edit]
Owing to their differing roles in the Jumi society, with Pearl functioning as a Guardian and Lady Blackpearl functioning as a Knight, the personalities of both individuals naturally juxtapose each other. While Pearl is compassionate, docile, and abashed, Lady Blackpearl, by contrast, has a warrior's spirit and is markedly more confident, proud, and courageous. In this regard, the gemstones that compose each individual's core symbolically represent the antithesis inherent in their personalities; the pearl, for one, symbolizes purity and innocence, appositely reflecting Pearl's docile naivety. The black pearl, conversely, is the result of the flawless, untainted pearl being subjected to the taint of warfare and bloodshed, therefore encapsulating chaos; aptly reflecting the brazen love of fighting that defines Blackpearl.
Pearl's timid nature is unveiled right from the beginning when she is first introduced in The Lost Princess; in response to Elazul harshly berating her for wandering off without him, her response sees her frantically apologizing to him for being absent-minded, without so much as desiring to defend herself.
Blackpearl starkly contrasts her pure alter-ego's mellow personality; while Pearl is timid, shy, and easily subdued, Blackpearl is brash, confident, and overpowering in her countenance. Her response to Elazul's demand for Pearl to be returned to him in Two Pearls reveal as much, where she noticeably adopts a register that sheds Pearl's hesitance (absence of ellipsis) and is instead definably cold, defiant and intimidating. This mannerism portrayed by Blackpearl also bespeaks the pride that she harbors as the Knight of the exalted Florina. While this pride does serve as a moot point in instances like these which answer to her need for her to keep up her guard when regarding those she does not trust, it has proven to be a flaw as well; even though she is aware that locating the Sword of Mana is a futile one, her pride causes her to obstinately continue with the mission, all the while remaining hopelessly blind towards the fact that her Guardian Florina is ailing.
