Nunuzac is a minor supporting character in Legend of Mana and a recurring character in the Mana series.

Background[edit]

The records of world history reveal Nunuzac as the former chief summoner of the mage-king Lonway, who made war on Anuella's and Faerie forces. Nunuzac was responsible for the burning of Rosiotti's Jungle, which incited hitherto neutral Rosiotti to join the battle on Anuella's side.

After Florina, the only Jumi who could heal, was kidnapped, Esmeralda fled the Bejeweled City like all of the others. She was separated from her sisters amidst the chaos and she was taken in by the Academy of Magic in Geo and became Nunuzac's assistant. The professor would protect her and teach her the art of magic hereafter until a magic knight would come rescue her.

History[edit]

Legend of Mana[edit]

“Back in the day, he was a conjuror who fought in many wars. Now he is a professor at the Academy of Magic, though his body is represented by a magic circle since his body was trapped in another dimension.”
In-game Encyclopedia

The Lucky Clover[edit]

Nunuzac first appears in Geo's central plaza where he is seen berating his pupil Esmeralda. He is later seen lecturing her inside the library after the Jumi told Elazul and the protagonsit to meet her there. Elazul is shocked to hear him refer her as 'Mudstone' but the professor retorts Jumis were once praised for their magic prowess able to cure any ailments, and mages coveted their powers, leading to them hunting Jumis. According to him, their cores are useless, just like his apprentice. Elazul tries to retaliate but the magician teleports himself out.

Further into the quest, Esmerald will summon the main character to the library again, where she is seen chatting with Nunuzac. She explains her reasons for being brought here and asks for the hero to become her knight. Elazu wonders if he can become his knight, too but Nunuzac tells him he already has his Guardian to protect.

The Cage of Dreams[edit]

The circular sorcerer reappears in The Cage of Dreams where he is seen inside the main character's workshops arguing with Belle about the Sproutling's fate as the Mana Tree. Belle accuses Nunuzac of hiding the leafy creature by trapping him in a spiritual dimension. As a result, the Sproutling cannot become the next Mana Tree, and thus Belle asks the protagonist to venture help him. The magician retorts Sproutlings should stay as they are and not become one with the sacred tree, since Nunuzac saw was peoplekind was able to do when they sought to harness the tree's power in the past.

Pokiehl comes inside the workshop to chat with Nunuzac about the fate of the Sproutling. He tells time has come for the little being to merge with the Mana Tree, but the sorcerer fears the the wisdoms might favor war over peace by allowing this. He then argues that people from all Fa'Diel has proven to live without the Mana Tree. Pokiehl answers back that the sorcerer's view of the world in incomplete, as love is what fuels bliss by sharing it. Nunuzac thinks everyone's a fool deep at heart and would even follow the Deathbringer's teachings if they had to, bringing back an age of darkness. The old magician seems to regret uttering those words as Pokiehl head back outside, but the Wisdom lasts words about praying for his soul even if he decides to destroy the world lingers in his heart.

Echoes of Mana[edit]

While not physically appearing in the game, Nunuzac was depicted in one memory gem:

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Nunuzac takes the form of a disc with a face composed of abstract shapes.

Personality[edit]

Although revered as a conjurer of some renown during the time of the holy wars, Nunuzac's character is one that seemingly contradicts his credentials; he has been portrayed as an individual who is brusque, insensitive, presumptuous and egocentric.

A fine means of illustrating Nunuzac's rude lack of sensitivity can clearly be observed through his interactions with Esmeralda; in spite of the fact that the fate of her people is dire as they face the risk of extinction, Nunuzac unhesitatingly derides and condemns them, harshly proclaiming that their cores are "worthless" and disparagingly referring to Esmeralda as "dirt".

It is through this same example that some redeeming qualities of Nunuzac may be derived; it is revealed that his mockery of the Jumi race is not out of malice, but rather done as a means to protect Esmeralda from coming under the notice of the enigmatic jewel hunter.

Despite this, Nunuzac's character flaws far outweigh his strengths. In The Cage of Dreams, for one, he impertinently takes matters into his own hands by imprisoning the Sproutling who is to catalyse the Tree of Mana's revival in a different dimension, under the fear that mankind will abuse the tree's power. His adamant refusal to release the Sproutling, alongside his verbal abuse of Pokiehl thereafter, further amplifies this unfavourable aspect of his character, as they point towards an irate obstinacy and an attitude of condescension.
