Treasure chest

Treasure chests, also simply known as chests or treasure boxes, are a recurring feature in the Mana series. They often take the guise of large green chests with gold inlay and can contain a variety of items or lucre. In most installments, they can readily be found on the overworld or by defeating enemies. Some, however, may unleash a trap after being opened, harming party members. Some may even reveal themselves to be mimic boxes in disguise.
Most games allow treasure dropped by monsters to remain on screen until the player character exits to another area.
Appearances[edit]
Final Fantasy Adventure/Adventures of Mana[edit]
Treasure chests can be both found on the overworld, inside dungeons and by defeating enemies. Most chests found in dungeons contain important items such as spells & equipment while those dropped by enemies hold common items. Unique to this installment is the ability to push opened treasure chests around rooms to activate floor switches, which is necessary for completing some puzzles inside dungeons.
Mimics act as sentient treasure chest roaming in certain dungeons. They bear a very similar appearance to the regular chest aside from their menacing eyes.

Secret of Mana[edit]

A few treasure chests are scattered throughout dungeons and towns, usually containing a weapon orb and occasionally key items or weapons. They can be more regularly spotted after defeating monsters and hold items, gold pieces, or equipment. Player characters will vigorously rattle the box before throwing it on the ground, unlocking it. Some chest left from monsters are booby-trapped and can damage or inflict status effects to the party member the player currently control. Such effect can vary as follows:
Enemy level | Content |
---|---|
A: 1-10 | Bomb / Punch gloves / Poison Needles |
B: 11-15 | Bomb |
C: 16-26 | Riot Gas |
D: 27-30 | Stone gas |
E: 31-36 | Mimic Box |
F: 37≤ | Death Trap / Shadow Zero |
Some chests can even grow legs and will try to scurry away from the party, initiating a goose chase.

Trials of Mana[edit]
In the 2D version of the game, treasure chests are infrequent on the overworld and usually contain key items. Most chests are left by slain enemies and contain a variety of restorative & battle items. In a similar vein to its predecessor, chests could contain a trap roulette spinning around the player character upon opening its content. Should the player land on OK, the party receives the item and is spared from any harm. However, varying damage is inflicted to on or all party members if the cursor lands elswhere. The elusive polter box and kaiser mimic has a change of appearing to confront the unlucky adventurers.
Trap roulette is completely absent from the 3D version, making polter boxes and kaiser mimics conceal themselves as regular chests in dungeons instead. In addition, regular treasure chests are much more frequent and can be spotted anywhere in town, dungeons and the overworld alongside sparkles and urns albeit less plentiful. Their content is usually better than those found by collecing sparkles or urns, like multiple exemplars of common items, more lucre or even equipment. On the flipside, monsters no longer drop treasures, instead making the party automatically obtain their spoils after battle.
Finding 5 Li'l Cacti allow players to view unopened treasure boxes on the map.
Players can gain the Treasure Seeker and Treasure Hunter after opening 100 and 200 treasure chests respectively. Said achievements are linked with a bronze and silver trophies in PlayStation Network.

Players can gain the ability to see undiscovered chests on a map after meeting with Li'l Cactus in Rime Falls.

Sword of Mana[edit]
Although a rewrite of Final Fantasy Adventure, treasure chest behavior in this game is a hybrid of that found in both Trials of Mana and Legend of Mana, below. From the former, it inherits trap roulette, with its own list of possible outcomes. From the latter, most chests are populated with crafting materials. Most chests hold crafting material or restorative items. The chest design is the same as Trials of Mana's.

Children of Mana[edit]
Treasure chests come in 3 tiers: bronze, silver, & gold. They are scattered in dungeons and typically hold gems or equipment with the silver and gold ones having better odds of good content. gleam drops are often found inside treasure boxes. Chests open with the strike of a weapon and quickly disappear once unlocked and thus cannot be knocked back like other field objects. There is a chance for chests to be mimics in disguise.
A score result is given following dungeon completion with bronze, silver or gold rank showing on screen depending on how well the player did. Each rank is associated with its matching chest.

On each map are scattered hidden items units must walk on in order to acquire. A speech bubble and melody will be triggered on the unit once the item is collected. Treasure is shown on the ranking screen at the end of the mission in the Treasure found section. Most hidden treasures are comprised of equipment for unit characters.
There are no traditional treasure boxes showing up on field.
