Diospyros is a supporting character in Echoes of Mana. As the appointed Mana Swordsman of the twin sisters Dema and Nona, he is very close to them and shares their burden as a member of the Mana clan.

Background[edit]

Diospyros was born and raised along with Dema & Nona inside a Mana clan and observed the rites & rituals overseen by their village elder. Dema was chosen to ascend as the next Mana goddess when she was but a child, and the young boy was also selected to become his Mana swordsman. Both of then were taught the ancient tradition necessary to carry on the legacy of the clan. One fateful day, the elder declared that the Mana Tree was withering and so, Dema & Diospyros prepared to perform their duty as foretold. Nona, however, objected to this ceremony as she could not bear the ensuing separation from her elder sister. She scolded Diospyros for not saying anything and rushed to the Sanctuary and prayed te current Goddess to allow her to take her place instead. As the Mana maiden & swordsman arrived at the aforementioned place, they were utterly shocked to see that Nona ascended to goddesshood in her sister's stead. This action led Dema into despair as she would be the one who would lose an important piece of her life. Diospyros watched helplessly as the older sister became a shut-in.

After Dema mysteriously disappeared, Diospyros took upon himself to travel the world for over 10 years to gather pieces of echoes for clues of her absence. He also was too ashamed to tell Nona about Dema's condition as she trusted him to protect her elder sister. Meanwhile, a mysterious copycat emerged from Dema's guilt & fear of betraying Diospyros in her attempt of creating a perfect Sanctuary devoid of pain & suffering. This doppelganger would chase down her Haverster relentlessly to prenvent them from gaining the Mana Sword.

History[edit]

Echoes of Mana[edit]

A young version of Diospyros appears in a distorted echo during chapter six of the first season, who was tasked to search for Nona who deserted the village out of frustration from not being heard by her sister. He briefly meets with the Harvester, but doesn't seem to remember this event after growing up.

Diospyros makes his first true appearance at the beginning of the second season, where he appears after the Harvester visits the Hollow World transformed by Great Goddess Dema. He is first mistaken by Baashear for the Ebon Knight, but Nona reassure the party by telling them he is loyal to her as her Mana Swordsman and means no harm. He doesn't seem to recognize either member of the party, and seems much more focused on stopping Dema from destroying echoes with the Hollow Tree. He also confronts the protagonist about them being chosen by Dema as her swordsman, since their Mana Sword is artificial, losing power since its first use. He concludes his introduction by leaving the group for echoes requiring more pressing assistance.

He later reappears periodically to meet the Harvester's friends and catch up with them. His biggest implication is near the end of the story, when he revisits along with everyone Dema & Nona's origins via an echo, explaining to the group how everything came to be. During the flashback the party encounters another piece of echo showing how Dema was lured by a mysterious voice. This is revealed to be the missing element Diospyros was looking for more than 10 years. He later rejoins with the Ebon Knight, explaining we wishes to carry one the task of preventing Dema in her devious schemes. He asks for the dark knight's armor and fuses with him, regaining some of its courage.

During the final confrontation with Dema, he tries to reason with her by showing how her actions made him & her sister feel, but the Great Goddess refuses to comply and doubles down by attacking the party. With the help of everyone pitching in and the echo fruits sending reinforcement from different echoes, the party finally manages to defeat Dema, who reverts back to her maiden self. There, her Mana Swordsman carries her back to her sister's sanctuary.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Personality[edit]

Diospyros is depicted as a calm, serious, and dilligent young man who is committed to his duties as a Mana Swordsman. He can put a lot on himself and be a harsh self-critic. He feels responsible for what happened to Dema & Nona back when the latter ascended as the next Mana Goddess. Ever since this event he felt shame in his actions and blame his lack of power. When he merges with the Ebon Knight's armor, he becomes resolute in twarthing Dema's plans.
