This article is about the twin non-playable human from Echoes of Mana. For the playable Hero, see Hero (Echoes of Mana).

The Doppelganger is an important supporting character in Echoes of Mana. They are the other half of the playable Harvester tasked to stay behind while the hero visits the different echoes in search of the Mana Sword.

Background[edit]

Quilto & Quilta are the last humans left from a destroyed world where the Mana Tree withered and died. Anise safeguarded them for her nefarious plans to destroy the remaining echoes containing a Mana Tree. For Dema to become the unique Mana Goddess and carry on her course of action, she would need an obedient vessel to seek out the Mana Sword of their world. Unsure to whom it belongs to, the Great Witch split a soul in half and gave both humans a half, making them virtually identical inside. She then kept the twin in a dormant state until Dema was ready to take action and both headed back to Mavolia.

History[edit]

Echoes of Mana[edit]

“A young boy tasked with harvesting the fruits of the Mana Tree. After awakening in the sanctuary with no recollection of his past, Quilto is guided by the Mana Goddess as he journeys through the echoes of worlds that once were. He can be easily spotted by his wild hair, tied clumsily back with woven cloth.”

Upon returning to the Sanctuary of Mana from their first echo in Pinzton, the Harvester is greeted by a strange lookalike they have never seen before. The twin declares they has been ordered by the Goddess to stay inside the Sanctum while the protagonist ventures into different echoes. They say they are a bit jealous of the Hero being able to meet different people and places while they are stuck here and hope they can visit them someday. Alas, the Harvester must press on and continue their journey to find the legendary blade, pluck another echo fruit and hop into their next destination, leaving their twin and the Mana Goddess behind.

The doppelganger can still listen to the Harvester's many feats as they tell their twin what has happened every time they come back. One time, the Harvester is turned unconscious while visiting a strange echo of mismatched settings, they are greeted by the lookalike standing near them. Confused, the Hero asks them who they are to the bemusement of the twin, who retort "I am you. And you are me." This answer seems unsatisfactory to the Harvester, who asks "...But who am I?" to which the doppelganger has no true answer.

After the protagonist finally retrieves the holy sword buried within them, they return to the Sanctuary one more time, and perform a flesh-piercing ritual onto the Mana Goddess, who declares afterwards she has become a true goddess. She then launches a powerful energy field toward the protagonist and Baashear, who get knocked out while the twin seems unfazed by this event.

They return once again during the second chapter of season two, where they watch accompanied with the new Goddess's pet Ramy as the party returns to their new Sanctuary. It seems they are having a hard time finding their way through the fabric of the echoes and find themselves lost again, despite trying to harvest fruits like the protagonist did. Ramy scolds them for not taking their new job as the Goddess Dema's Mana swordsman seriously, but Gossamare appears before them, telling them he can help them stop the Hero in their track by feeding the elementals to him.

The Harvester and their twin get to cross path once again at the end of the next chapter, where Gossamare fails to assimilate the fire spirit Salamando by being beaten by the hero and their crew. The doppelganger takes the opportunity to ask them why they chose to be a thorn ib the side of the Goddess Dema, but doesn't get a good enough answer and still does not understand their path. They tell the Hero that from now on, they are no longer the same, and to call them by their true name which depends on their gender. They then ask Ramy why do they call them 'second string', to which the female sheep replies she is the Goddess's number one and not them. The evil trio heads back the the Great Sanctuary to think of another plan.

During the final chapter, the protagonist and crew are surprised to see the doppelganger wielding a similar looking Mana Sword. They explain that they received the sword when the Harvester used it for the first time. However, both swords are incomplete in their current state and are unstable since they are split. The lookalike then declares they intend to defeat the main character and fuse their blades to become the true Mana Swordsman. They are ultimately bested by the Hero, however, and opt to combine the two holy swords together. They admit they are jealous, but the whole party invite them to join their side and visit Pinzton one this is all over. The lookalike replies they will think on it, and entrusts the Harvester to take care of Dema. They admit they wanted to see Dema happy by fulfilling her goals, but she always seemed sad as time went on.

In the end, the twin decides to join the crew and head to the newly restored Pinzton.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Both possess unkempt brown hair tied with red and green ribbons, and both have green eyes. They each wear nature-themed clothing and carry an adventurer's satchel on their right hip, the only notable difference between the pair being that the Hero wears long pants while the Heroine wears garments resembling a short skirt or knee-length shorts.

Personality[edit]

While the Harvester & their twin are said to be obedient and virtually the same by Anise before being bestowed life, both of them slowly learn to develop a distinct personality over time. At first, the doppelganger is mellow and doesn't seem to react much to their surroundings unless when listening to the protagonist's adventures. After what they consider the Hero's betrayal to the Great Goddess Dema's plan, they turn somewhat antagonistic toward them and still don't understand their motive for turning against them. After being defeated in the last chapter, they realize they might not be the true Mana Swordsman and give up on their role & ultimately understand they true nature as an individual.
