This article is about Hero from Echoes of Mana. For the twin non-playable human, see Doppelganger (Echoes of Mana).
For other uses, see Hero.

The Hero is the main character in Echoes of Mana. An avatar of the player, they are appointed by the Mana Goddess with the spirit Baashear to revive the Tree of Mana by restoring the Echoes, memories of previous worlds that now manifest as the very essence of the Tree itself.

Background[edit]

Quilto & Quilta are the last humans left from a destroyed world where the Mana Tree withered and died. Anise safeguarded them for her nefarious plans to destroy the remaining echoes containing a Mana Tree. For Dema to become the unique Mana Goddess and carry on her course of action, she would need an obedient vessel to seek out the Mana Sword of their world. Unsure to whom it belongs to, the Great Witch split a soul in half and gave both humans a half, making them virtually identical inside. She then kept the twin in a dormant state until Dema was ready to take action and both headed back to Mavolia.

History[edit]

Echoes of Mana[edit]

“A young boy tasked with harvesting the fruits of the Mana Tree. After awakening in the sanctuary with no recollection of his past, Quilto is guided by the Mana Goddess as he journeys through the echoes of worlds that once were. He can be easily spotted by his wild hair, tied clumsily back with woven cloth.”

The Harvester was awoken first as Dema decided to use the protagonist to harvest the echoes and recollect the memories of past echoes. The disguised Mana Goddess sought to train her Mana swordsman first, and made the hero learn the ropes of battle. An unknown force under the guise of Zable Fahr identified them as the phantom eye and the root of calamity and attempted to slay them before they truly awaken, however. Thankfully, the Harvester defeated the threat and opened their eyes to the Sanctuary of Mana. There, they met with Dema who took the identity of the Mana Goddess and had their mission layed out in front of them. They were to seek out the fabled Mana Sword by visiting the various echoes they would harvest off the Mana Tree. She entrusted a magical doll named Baashear to the Harvester to guide them in their journey, then disappeared. The Hero plucked their first echo fruit and ventured into their first memory.

There they met with Duffle and Honeycomb in Pinzton, a duo of town guards who quickly befriended them by showing them around the place. Baashear was suddently captured by a flock of Knitwits and the trio of fighters went to rescue him. Moments after the reunion, a mysterious knight clad in black armor emerged from a portal, engaging the adventurers in combat. The heros have not choice but to run, as the Ebon Knight seemed to be fixated on preying on the Harvester. The little Baashear had to create an emergency portal back to the Sanctuary to effectively flee the pursuer. Safely back, they are greeted by the other human lookalike who tells them they were being ordred by the Goddess to stay here while the Harvester is busy visiting echoes. Meanwhile, the echo fruit the hero visited is etched deep within their counsciousness, allowing the place to be visited time and time again.

The Harvester continued his search for the elusive Mana Sword and visited many echoes, each of them absorbed into their memories after returning to the Sanctuary. While they were often mired into thinking they were about to obtain the holy blade, all echoes they ventured in did not contain the weapon they were looking for. The hero nonetheless met with many more friends during his inter-dimentional voyage, namely the Wolffolk Blainchet, the Scorfolk Raxa, and the faerie Mousseline. As they attempted to return from their fifth trip, the hero was mysteriously warped to a strange echo where they met with two twin girls playing inside a dollhouse. The plucky one named Nona fled out of frustration from not being heard by her sister controlling the narrative of their playtime. The harvester was tasked by the other twin to find her sister. They finally found her sitting in an open field after traversing a mangled path made up of different echoes. Nona thanked the hero for listening to her story and said to never forget they are their own person.

As the protagonist headed back to the Sanctuary, they resumed their quest and headed for the seventh echo. As they were about to complete it and return once again, the mysterious Ebon Knight appeared out of nowhere and warped the Harvester to a Dark Echo. There, he assaulted the hero with a horde of knitwits, only for Mousseline the faerie to appear before them. She explains to the hero she can help them out only if they relinquish their quest for the holy blade. They refuse, with the faerie leaving not before admonishing the protagonist not to cry to her when all this blows to their face. The hero succesfully defeat waves of enemies with the help of all the people they met along their journey, and reaches the Ebon Knight at the end of the path. The knight claims he was the one chosen by the sword and that is why he is not going to lose. He ultimately meets his fate as he is slain by the Harvester. As he collapses, a light shines from within the hero, materializing into the Mana Sword. Congratulated by the Goddess, she then asks them to plunge the blade to her flesh as it is part of the ritual. The protagonist plants the tip of the sword inside the maiden, as she declares to have become the real Mana Goddess, to the bewilderment of the Hero and Baashear. She unleashes a powerful wave of energy that knocks both of them out and transform the Mana Tree into a twisted version of itself while laughing hysterically.

The Harvester wakes up after hearing a conversation between two goddesses, the former telling them they've completed their mission, while the latter claims the opposite, and pleads them to open their eyes. The hero wakes up in another Sanctuary with an alternate Mana Goddess as their side. Turns out she is the twin sister Nona they met in a previous echo. She explains Mousseline helped them & Baashear escape the previous Sanctuary and reveals she was the one who ascended into Goddesshood and not her sister Dema. By going back into the old echo where the protagonist's original world once stood, the Hero is met with a distorted version of the Mana Goddess, who explains she decided to set things right by creating a false Sanctuary for the Harvester to find the Mana Sword and create a False Tree that should consume every other echo. She wished to eradicate the sacrifice of Mana maiden by desroying the echoes of the Mana Tree by creating a new single law that would source its power from one Tree. She asks for the Harvester to join her cause but they decline, causing her to seek help from her newly appointed servant named Ramy, a doppelganger of Baashear. She entrusts the Hero to give a message to her sister that she will come rescue her in due time, then disappears. The main character, Baashear and Mousseline return to the new Sanctuary, where the Mana Goddess Nona introduces a grown up Diospyros to the party, who incidentally looks just like the Ebon Knight. He is however loyal to Nona and seeks to restore what was broken.

All of them warp to a distorted version of Pinzton, Nona explaining that Dema's False Tree is born from their Hollow World to create a new sanctuary. She then entrusts the Harvester to look for their lost friends through the echoes as it is the first step to discover the scattered scraps of fabrics of their Hollow World memories. Diospyros part ways to another echo where the False Tree is a looming threat. One by one, the Hero and Mousseline venture into the lost echoes to reunite with their friends and uncover their backstories. They also befriend the elemental spirits ans rescue some of them from the evil Gossamare who was sent by his sister the Great Witch Anise to prevent the Mana Sword to be restored at full power by the eight of them.

As the whole gang arrives at the Great Sanctuary created by Dema, the protagonist is forced to battle their twin to merge their two incomplete Mana Sword into one. The doppelganger is slain in the end, and the Mana Sword is restored to full capacity. Both twins realize how their souls have grown into two fully fledged ones, becoming their own person. The party moves forward and eventually meet with Dema. They try to reason with her, but she refuses to hear it, and confront the group instead. They manage to defeat her, but she then transforms into a humongous skeletal being called False Tree Dema. With the aid of the Echo fruits, the Harvester summons heroes from previous echoes and slay the beast for good. With the echoes of the False Tree being released, the Hollow World reverts back to its original void state. With Mousseline's memories of this world sealed away in her mind and with the assistance of the elemental spirits and the Mana Sword, the faerie sacrifices herself to ressurect the world before its destruction. The once twin humans can now live a peaceful life in Pizton with all their friends.

Characteristics[edit]

As in Legend of Mana, the Hero's name and gender are selected by the player. In promotional materials, the Hero is given the name Quilto and the Heroine is dubbed Quilta, perhaps reflective of their mission from the Mana Goddess to stitch together memories of the series in order to revive the Mana Tree.

Following which character the player chooses, the character of the opposite gender takes a supporting and later minor antagonist role as Boy or Girl.

Later in the story, they gain the Mana Sword by defeating the mysterious Ebon Knight, and save the Mana Spirits from Gossamare. In the end, the hero's party confronts the False Goddess Dema, trying in vain to reason with her pacifically, and finally defeat her.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Both possess unkempt brown hair tied with red and green ribbons, and both have green eyes. They each wear nature-themed clothing and carry an adventurer's satchel on their right hip, the only notable difference between the pair being that the Hero wears long pants while the Heroine wears garments resembling a short skirt or knee-length shorts.

Personality[edit]

While the Harvester & their twin are said to be obedient and virtually the same by Anise before being bestowed life, both of them slowly learn to develop a distinct personality over time, as the protagonist learns to forge their own path starting at the beginning of the second season. The Hero starts questioning who they are right after chapter 6 of season 1, when he meets with young Nona who tells them to never forget to be their own person. At the end of their journey, they have matured into a brave & independent person who speaks their mind a bit more than before.
