Trials of Mana in-game dialogue

Joster, also known as King Joster is a supporting character in Trials of Mana and recurring character in Mana series.

Background[edit]

Joster is a warrior of Laurent. He is apparently close to the royal family as he is implicitly stated to be engaged to the princess of Laurent, Minerva. He is very loyal to both Minerva and Galura. He is also a good friend of Qucas.

History[edit]

Heroes of Mana[edit]

“A warrior of Laurent, and Minerva's fiancé. He is worried about the kidnapped Minerva, but feels chagrined at being powerless to help her.”
Notebook

Joster is first introduced in Chapter 5: Dragon Wings of Reunion, where he is seen attending Roget and crew's reunion with the Queen of Laurent. The Peddan deserters try to convice the Wind Kingdom to join forces with them as their enemy already taken the Kingdom of Ferolia. Galura politely refuses, stating that they should first send emissaries all over the world to see for themselves whether this invading rumor is true or not. Defeated, Roget and crew head back to the Nightswan, when Joster, Alma, and Minerva pay them a visit. Qucas exchanges some gleeful words with his old gang, but is interrupted by a Peddan carrier heading straight for the citadel. The defectors join in the fight against the Peddan invadors, but Nevarlan reinforcement in seen dispatching soldiers in the area. The Laurentian army ends up victorious after a hard battle, but the Nevarlan army has already gotten into the citadel. Meanwhile, a strange black mirror appears out of nowhere, stopping the everblowing wind of Laurentian mountains. Joster and the others rushes to the throne room, where they meet with Olbex, the leader of Nevarl. They are too late, however, as they see the Queen lying dead on the ground and Minerva being taken hostage in exchange for the survivor go free. Joster and Alma try to dissuage the princess in doing so, but the adamantly agrees to be detained by Nevarlan agents. Joster and Alma join Roget and crew, hoping to get the future queen of Laurent back in one piece.

Much later in Chapter 16, Requiem in the Winds, during Roget and crew's search for the remaining Mana Stones and Elementals, Joster agrees to lead the party to Gusthall where the Windstone is said to reside. There, they encounter Olbex and the captured princess of Laurent. The chief of Laurent orders them to round the remaining Laurentian refugees if they wish to see Minerva unharmed. Olbex also hopes in killing Qucas, the one who slayed his brother Bautcher during a diplomatic incident with Laurent several years ago. The princess of Laurent is surrounded by a mysterious protective twister and is able to draw the Nevarlan agents detaining her away. the resistance takes this opportunity to deal a fatal blow to Olbex who perishes in the process. Turns out Minerva was protected by the wind elemental during the fight. Joster escorts Minerva back to the Wind Kingdom while Alma stays with Roget and crew to find the remaining Moon spirit in Ferolia.

Joster was most certainly affected by Anise's Mirror and had his memory of these past events stripped from him.

Interlude[edit]

Joster and Minerva helped in rebuilding the citadel and were eventually crowned King and Queen of Laurent. They later had the future heiress to the throne Riesz and Elliot as children. Sadly, Minerva died during her second childbirth and couldn't even live to see her son. This event left a strong impresion on Riesz, and took upon herself to raise her younger brother like her mother would have. Advancing in age, King Joster lost his sight for unclear reasons, but was able to receive psychic messages from the wind, granting him the ability to sense someone's presence and foretell events.

Trials of Mana[edit]

During Riesz's opening gambit, the young princess and captain of the Amazon guard is looking for her brother for his daily training. She first asks her father to use his powers to sense Elliot. He replies that he's not far away as he still feels his presence inside the citadel. Riesz unfortunately finds him too late, as Nevarlan forces used his gullible nature to deactivate the switch beneath the fortress controlling the strong winds protecting it. This allows the kingdom to be easily invaded and ransacked, wounding King Joster in the process. Riesz rushes to his side, but is unable to help him in his state, in his dying words, he laments to his daughter that the wind told him that invaders would come taking the citadel one day, but he did not take action. He adds that he doesn't sense Elliot inside the citadel, urging Riesz to find him. He dies shortly after uttering these words. After losing everything, the princess of Laurent heads to the mountain path and prays to her mother to protect her father and her fallen comrades in heaven.

During Riesz's epilogue, Elliot is back in Laurent, telling Riesz he's had a dream of his mother and father looking so happy. They also told the young prince to return to the citadel and bring prosperity to the kingdom. One last scene depicts Riesz praying to her parents, vowing to work together with Elliot to bring Laurent back to what is was before.

If Riesz is in the party and the player starts the post-game Chapter 7, she can gain information from Alma that a special heirloom, the Kind Sphere was used in royal ceremonies held in somnosa meadows in Heavensway. There, the party is attacked by the Empreeb. Upon defeating it, the monster releases a glowing orb before escaping, revealing the ghosts of Joster and Minerva before her. Her mother is so proud of how she took care of Elliot in her absence even if it was a heavn burden for such a young child. His father feels he should have been more present in raising his brother, relying too much on Riesz instead. The princess doesn't mind following her duties and pockets the royal treasure, allowing her to reach Class 4.
