- —Trials of Mana in-game dialogue
Belladonna, also known as Isabella, is a secondary antagonist and boss in Trials of Mana.
Background[edit]
For the most part, Belladonna's past is shrouded in mystery. Being from Mavolia, she probably met with the Prince of Mavolia whom she desperately fell in love with at some point in time. She desperately wanted him to achieve his vision of merging the underworld with Fa'Diel and rule both dimensions so she joined forced with the vampire Malocchio to help her master achieve his goals. In order to fulfill his world domination, the eight Mana Stones of the world had to be activated and the Benevodons inside them released to open the portal to the Sanctuary of Mana, where the fabled Sword of Mana lied. The holy blade would fill the Prince of Mavolia's powers to incredible heights, making him an allmighty god. To do so, she devised a plan to usurp the throne of Nevarl and act as the ruler's trusty adviser as her diguise. She saved Lord Flamekhan's life during an expedition in the Burning Sands while he was stranded and maked his way back home. By pulling off this feat, she gained the approval of Flamekhan, ensuring the furthering of His Dark Majesty's plans.
History[edit]
Trials of Mana[edit]
- “FAITHFUL SERVANT OF HIS DARK MAJESTY -- Belladonna's monstrous beauty and enticing countenance bewitched Flamekhan, the leader of the Nevarlan thieves' guild. With the forces of Nevarl at her command, Belladonna sets out to claim Riesz's homeland of Laurent for the sake of her dark kingdom.”
- —Square Enix Official Website
During Hawkeye's opening gambit, Belladonna took the name of Isabella while in Nevarl and manipulated Flamekhan into disbanding the Noble guild of thieves and making it a kingdom. Then, she suggested invading the neighboring nations, starting with the wind kingdom of Laurent. The reason behind this, according to her, is that the water supplies of the region have run dry because of the Mana supply and this could deal a heavy strain on the Nevarl Nation in the long run. She explained this decision to Hawkeye who has just returned from a night raid expedition in Sirhtan and arranged a private meeting with Malocchio while Flamekhan was presumadly sleeping. She was caught by Hawkeye and Eagle, the son of Flamekhan, who we spying on her, on assumption she was controlling his father. She uses her mind-controlling powers to turn Eagle against his friend, forcing them to fight each other and leading Hawkeye to unwillingly kill his friend. Belladonna then framed the young thief for murder and put him in jail. During his stay in his cell, the devious sorceress put a Choker of Death on Jessica, daughter of Flamekhan and Hawkeye's love interest and tell the prisoner not to tell what happened to her lest she dies.
After Hawkeye's escape, Belladonna ruled over Nevarl with an iron first, starting with using her mind-control magic on every subject she could find and executing those who figured out her schemes with her summoned monsters. Since Jessica was already under her curse, her mind-control spells couldn't work on her, so she resorted to throwing her in jail. She ventured out of the fortress and set her eyes on invading Laurent. She rallied a troop of ninjas and while learning about the impregnable citadel whose strong winds are controlled by an underground crystal. She tasked Bil & Ben a duo of nevarlan scouts to infiltrate the citadel and deactivate the winds and kidnap the prince of Laurent while the rest of the nevarlans hide in the mountains. During Riesz's opening gambit, the duo of ninjas took advantage of the Laurentian princess's daily training to sway Elliot into leading them to the control room and use his key to stop the strong gusts protecting the castle. With the invasion and the kidnapping successfull, they burn the whole place down and head for the next step to their world domination by sending troops take control of the nearby fishing town of Palo.
Somehow, the boy ended up as an indentured servant at Beiser's Night Market and Malocchio went purchasing him back from a local trader. Meanwhile, the siege of the Laurent citadel is interrupted by the Amazon resistance and the protagonists who retrieved the aid of Sylphid by blowing Somnosa spores into the fortress, lulling the occupants to sleep. Belladonna welcomed the players characters as they rushed to the deepest part of the citadel and introduces herself as the Dark Majesty's servant. She retreated along with the Nevarlan forces back to the desert.
Back in Nevarl, she resurrected Bil & Ben who were felled by the protagonists back in Laurent and escort Jessica to the Fiery Gorge to use her as a sacrifice to release the energy of the Mana Stone of Fire, all the while lifting the curse of the Choker of Death on the girl. As they are about to enter the volcanic area, the trio of main characters catched up to them, so Belladonna left the twin ninjas stall the party while the escapes to the Firestone. By the time she reached it, Jessica passed out from the heath and from wearing the choker for so long, and the party intercepted the sorceress on a bridge. She threatened them not to go any further should she would trow the poor girl into the lava, but is hit by a dart either blown by Hawkeye (if he's not in the party) or Niccolo, forcing Belladonna to escape without Jessica. She nevertheless activates the Mana Stone by using the souls of Bil & Ben instead and mock the protagonist for helping her before vanishing again.
As the main characters finally gathered all Mana spirits and combined their powers to Oblivisle, the sudden release of all eight Mana Stones' energy opens a portal to the Sanctuary. Belladonna and Malocchio gathers a batallion on a carrier and head for the holyland. As the three evil factions of the world collide, Belladonna, under the rule of His Dark Majesty, finds herself warring for the control of the Sword of Mana. What follows next depends on who is the main character of the story:
- If Duran or Angela is the main character of the story, then the Dragon Lord's faction destroys the remains of His Dark Majesty, making his revival impossible. Heartbroken, Belladonna kills Malocchio and then is hinted to commit suicide.
- If Kevin or Charlotte is the main character of the story, then the Masked Mage's faction destroys the remains of His Dark Majesty, making his revival impossible. Heartbroken, Belladonna kills Malocchio and then is hinted to commit suicide.
- If Hawkeye or Riesz is the main character of the story, the Prince of Mavolia's faction kills the Dragon Lord and the Masked Mage, disbanding their respective factions.
In the event that Hawkeye or Riesz is the chosen, they obtain the fabled holy sword at the foot of the Tree of Mana, but Belladonna kidnaps Faerie and and demands the Sword in exchange for her life, forcing them to comply. They meet in the Nevarl Fortress, where the exchange is dealt with. The vampire tries to wield the Sword at first, but its holy powers are no match for him to withstand. Belladonna corrupts the sword with her dark magic, turning the blade into reflecting the heart of its new owner. They both depart to use the Sword to free the Benevodons inside each Mana Stone, purging the world of humans and reviving the Prince of Mavolia in the process.
The heroes kill the Benevodons one by one and reach the Dark Castle, His Dark Majesty's lair next to the Night Cavern. There, they meet with Belladonna for the last time, who taunts them for releasing the Benevodons' power. She confronts the party by transforming into her beast form, but is utltimately bested by them. His her dying words, she explains her master's backstory and how he camed to be called the Prince of Mavolia. She adds that she desperately wanted him to open his heart for her, but she fades from existence before accomplishing that goal.
In the HD remake, the party can obtain the Unleashed Chain Ability upon defeating the sorceress in Hawkeye and/or Riesz's storyline.
Rise of Mana[edit]
The Crimson Wizard, with Belladonna and Goremand, makes cameo appearances in the mobile phone game Rise of Mana. They serve as bosses and allies, even when against them as bosses. They can be faced individually or all together.
Two heroes of warring tribes from the Spirit Realm, the divine Rasta and demonic Daruka, are sent into the Physical Planes sharing a body and forced to cooperate. In fact, it was a plan of the Mana Goddess to bring peace between their tribes.
When fought as a boss, the Crimson Wizard hovers over the ground flanked by two machine monsters. He is fast, resilient, and casts deadly spells. The heroes must dodge his spells and pummel him at close range, but can also use magic.
The two machines are quite tough. They land whirling blows and can turn their head into cannons. The Crimson Wizard uses Fire Magic to conjure two fireballs on each side that blast purple beams, or to conjure from the sky a fireball that causes a huge explosion. He uses Water/Ice Magic to conjure blue circles on the ground, causing huge icicles to erupt from them before they vanish in a circle of blue vapour. He uses Wind/Thunder Magic to conjure many thunderbolts at once.
The three together form a formidable team that unleash long-range and close-range combos. Be very careful and dodge and counterattack rather than rushing blindly.
Circle of Mana[edit]
Belladonna makes a cameo appearance in the online game, along with several other characters from the Mana series. She appears in 12 sets of cards.

Character Bond dialogues[edit]
'Say, won't you help me revive the Dark Majesty? He is my everything, you see...'
'So, you've defeated a benevodon, have you? Hm, there may be more to you than meets the eye.'
'You want power too, yes? Then join me, and I shall give you the power of darkness!'
'Love? Ha, I am not so naive... It is power I need. Without it, there is nothing I can protect!'
'It is not that I am eager to throw my life away, but rather...I am ready to give it up if it will make him happy...'
'Isabella... Belladonna... Call me what you like as it makes no difference to me.'
'Tell me, is that vexatious lad here as well?'
'Belladonna...? Ah, a name familiar to me indeed...'
'I will do anything to see the Dark Majesty's return. Anything...'
'I have sworn my loyalty to the Dark Majesty...'

Lord of Vermilion III[edit]
The Crimson Wizard, Belladonna and Goremand make cameos in this crossover arcade strategy game. It features collectible cards and battles in open space while controlling several units, consisting in different characters from many Square Enix games. They serve as powerful units who fight with their spells from the game.
Trivia[edit]
- A very similar looking character that also goes by the name Isabella appears in Sword of Mana. They also share the ability to change into a cat-like beast. It is unclear if the two characters are supposed to be one and the same person, or if it is more of a cameo.
- Fanha from Secret of Mana is somewhat similar to Isabella of Sword of Mana and Belladonna of Trials of Mana.
- Despite all the terrible acts that Belladonna commits for the Dark Majesty, she's hinted at having a kinder side. Apart from her desire to regain his soul, if the Dark Majesty's remains are destroyed by the other villains, she kills Malocchio and frees Elliot (who was meant to serve as the Dark Majesty's vessel upon his revival) since she has no use for him.
