Background

Dema was born with her twin sister as part of the Mana clan in a small unnamed village. There she befriended Diospyros was taugh the ways and customs of being a Mana maiden to prepare for her upcoming duties once the current Mana Tree would wither. On that fateful day, the consulted with the village elder who declared the holy tree to be dying. She announced the grave news to her sister and Diospyros and told them she would fulfill her duties as instructed to become the next Goddess. Nona objected to that decision and pressed Dema to reconsider, but the older sister reassured her sibling, telling her she had been prepared for that moment since she was little. Dema then asked Diospyros to be her knight for the ceremony and bring her to the Sanctuary. Nona scolded her friend for keeping his mouth shut, but decided to rush to the temple to see her twin sister for the last time. Unbeknownst to Dema, Nona took her role as the ascending Goddess by pleading the current Mana Goddess to become the next one in her sister's place. As the younger sister was about to transform, Dema & Diospyros watched helplessly as she succesfully ascended. This action led Dema into despair as she would be the one who would lose an important piece of her life.

According to Diospyros, Dema & him returned to the village and she became a shut-in, lamenting her predicament for quite some time. She felt angry at herself for obeying the law of her people if that means leaving someone behind. A bewitching voice echoed in her head, telling her she could choose her own destiny with her help. The young maiden declared she would want a world were none shall be sacrificed but her. Full of desires, Dema was lured by the enticing voice who took her to Mavolia, where they discussed part of their contract. For ten years, the maiden disappeared and plotted her revenge on the law of the Mana clan.

Anise first brought Dema to a barren world where the Mana Tree had died along with everything, suggesting this would be the perfect place to root her Sanctuary. To convice her further, the Great Witch brought the last to humans from this world to use as their puppet. She also gave each of them half a soul, as she was usure to which it belonged to in the first place. She told the maiden she needed to use a docile vessel for their plan to run smoothly. Anise concluded her visit by telling Dema to take all her time and to leave the two bodies aside until they need them.
