Synopsis

Escad conversing with Olbohn

While training in some unnamed woods, Escad is spinning his wheels after landing in an Echo and starts to flash back to his time with his onion-headed master Olbohn when he was stuck in a maze. The Wisdom of the Underworld reminds him that strength is not victory, and victory is not strength. His path in the labyrinth only holds value if he carves it himself. Back in reality, Escad is then approached by a gang of faeries that he does not like at all, immediately starting to get aggressive with them. At that point, they curse him to yet another labyrinth. The young knight is woken by Duffle and the protagonist, the girl saying that they have woken up here not too long ago. The young man recalls the words of his master, hoping that he might get stronger if the makes it out. A phalanx of knitwits overruns the labyrinth when Escad meets our heroes, but he is able to wipe them out with his sword. Duffle is in awe of this feat and is still very eager to learn what it means to be a knight, but Escad is not interested in answering her and would rather go it alone before another wave of monsters shows up. The party pleads with him to do otherwise, with which he complies reluctantly. Their combined strength overwhelms the second wave.

Heading deeper into the complex, the party encounters both Sumo and Duran. Another horde shows up and is beaten back.

During a lull in combat Duffle presses her questions on what makes a good knight. This leads to a discussion — and a fight in which all three men nearly come to blows. Escad, mishearing that Duran has sided with Faeries in his adventure (unaware that he is of another world in which faeries are seldom tricksters), begins to distrust him and raises his weapon against him. The Young Knight of Liotte claims that Faeries who take the guise of humans bring evil and should never be befriended. Sumo tries to reason with him, but Escad replies he is doing this for thwarting evil and upholding justice, and storms off. Just as the rest of the band starts to break up, a fourth wave of baddies attack Quiltx and Duffle.

One by one, each of the men responds to Duffle's distress, and the party is reunited, Escad and Duran making amends amid a never-ending onslaught. During the fight, Escad starts reflecting on the importance of friendship and fighting to protect those one cares about and how he was so focused on getting stronger for himself. Eventually, all make their way to the labyrinth's core, where a Minotaur waits. After the battle, the labyrinth breaks open and the party is able to make their escape.

Though Escad remains rough around the edges, it seems he has finally figured out what his master was trying to teach him. Duffle quips about finally learning what being a knight is all about, procceeding to list all the personality traits of each of the party members. She then swears to become the best knight she can be in her own personal style.
