Elazul is a major ally character in Legend of Mana and a recurring character in the Mana series.
Background
Elazul is part of the Jumis, a race of supernaturual humanoids born in the Bejeweled City. Under the command of Diana, the Jumi of Diamond, the clan waged war against the Deathbringer's army and used Florina, the Clarius of the Jumi to restore the fallen soldiers as her tears would replenish their ranks indefinitely. Later on, following the tragic hunting of the Jumis during the search of the seventh Mana Stone, most of the jewel folk died by lessening their energy flow through their core to protect the secrets of their clan. Mages were also after the Jumi's cores due to alleged rumors about them harboring rare mystical proprieties. The remaining Jumi population left their homeland of Etancel, the Bejewled City and concealed their identities to the best of their abilities.
As the tradition goes, Elazul became a Jumi Knight to Pearl, his Jumi Guardian sometimes after the prior tragic events. Unbeknownst to him, Pearl was originally known as Lady Blackpearl, the original Jumi Knight of Florina before she went to look for the Sword of Mana. A violent altercation with Sandra made he lose consciousness and all memories of her past self. As time went by, Elazul and Pearl embarked on a journey to find the lost Jumi people scattered across Fa'Diel in hopes of rebuilding their ranks. Unfortunately, this would prove difficult as the Pearl princess had the annoying habit of wandering on her own and getting lost in the process, forcing the Lapis Lazuli knight to constantly be beside her.
History
Legend of Mana
- “Pearl's knight, and one of the youngest Jumi. He speaks and acts in a rough manner and thus starts the occasional fight.”
- —In-game Encyclopedia
The Lost Princess
Elazul is introduced in Domina where he is seen harassing a local barmaid for information about Pearl, who has eloped him. Should the protagonist convinces him to team up with them, the young lady will give an artifact to them, allowing the player to create the Mekiv Cavern. Inside, they find a giant mad ape that must be defeated for Pearl to come out of her hiding. The two Jumis reunite and thank the hero before returning to town.
The Looking-Glass Tower
Pearl has gone to the Tower of Leires where she feel something luring her inside. As her and the protagonist reach the Room of Fate on the top floor, she explains that her past shall be revealed there. Inside, however, she sees an alternate self staring at her, and is immediately attacked by an Iron Centaur. Pearl rejoins with Elazul after the brawl, who urges her to get outside. His partner declines as she feels so close to remembering something. The Jumi Knight obliges and asks the protagonist to keep her safe with their life while he waits at the entrance. The two of them quickly reunite and leave the place unscathed.
The Lucky Clover
The main character agrees to shelter Pearl and Elazul for a while and agrees to bring the Jumi Knight to the magic town of Geo as he wishes to look for somebody. The two of them spot a young Jumi named Esmeralda loitering around the central plaza and find a way to catch up with her at the Academy of Magic. There, the female student agrees to see them on a certain date, to which she reveals searching for her missing sisters. The newly formed team search the whole town for clues but to no avail. After enough search, however, they gather Esmeralda's long lost siblings' cores, attracting the gaze of the Jewel Hunter, who leave them a letter telling those cores will be hers. Elazul and the hero try to keep Esmeralda and the cores at bay, but are nonetheless fooled by Sandra, who snatches them whole along with the Jumi of Emerald's.
Cosmo
Pearl is nowhere to be found again, and Elazul storms to the Mekiv Caverns to look for her. There, the main character and him find a strange fellow telling them about the purpose of the Jumi and where she went. Further in, they see Sandra forcing Pearl to cry tears of crystal but the Jumi of Pearl replies she cannot weep, like all of her kin save for Florina. The Jewel Hunter retorts that both her and Elazul have lost their sparkle and scratches the Lapis Knight's core with her cards before scurrying away. The party is then teleported back to the hero's home by the Lord of Jewels and Elazul finds himself bedridden.
Two Pearls
Elazul forces himself out of bed after learning of Pearl's disappearance. He drags his aching body all the way to the gates of the Tower of Leires, but collapses before entering the structure. The main character and him climb all the way to the Room of Fate where they find Pearl facing her true self, Lady Blackpearl. The Black Knight informs her goal is to reach the Stratum of Clarius, becoming the new Clarius of the Jumi and will give her life for all her brethren. Pearl states she doesn't want to die, but Lady Blackpearl urges her to abide by the rules. Elazul defends his Guardia by crossing swords and defeating the Black Knight, but the latter claims she will return in due time.
Alexandrite
Elazul and Pearl agree to meet Diana in Geo. Her petrified body located below the Palace of the Arts, the party gathers the keys of the heart and reanimate her body by doing a partner ceremony. Elazul explains that Diana has turned her body to stone in order to avoid being killed by Sandra. The Jumi of Diamond reveals that Jumi people were once able to cry tears of crystal at will, healing other races at the expanse of their own lives. However, they adapted to refrain from weeping and keep this power to themselves. Sandra erupts into the scene, claiming Diana used Florina as her scapgoat for shedding tears and rips her core in the process moments before leaving.
Fluorite
During the protagonist's visit to Geo, they meet with Florina in Pandora's Box and, with the help of Belle, the witch, enter her dreams. There, they stumble on Lady Blackpearl and Elazul discussing on him having no one to protect since the Black Knight has awakened. He feels like a failure and wishes for the Clarius to reset things even. Blackpearl is disgusted by his weakness and leaves him, with him trailing behing and pleading for her to accept him as her Knight. The Lapis Knight tries to summon the Mana Sword to cut Blackpearl's core in hopes that she will revert back to Pearl, but resigns as he tries to convince her to join forces. The Black Knight declines and leaves him again. She is seen confronting Sandra a while after, but kneels down after being bested, transforming into Pearl. Elazul runs to her and both exit the scene.
Teardrop Crystal
Elazul and Pearl have been investigating around Geo and meet with the main character to share information. They claim nobody knows who Alex the jeweler really is or his whereabouts. After searching the boutique, they find Florina inside Pandora's Box and the Clarius reverts Pearl back into her Lady Blackpearl form. She then asks her to answer some questions, to which the Black Knight reveals her past as Florina's original Knight and Alexandra taking her place. The Clarius claims she will heal Sandra's troubled heart, but both Blackpearl and Elazul wish to defeat her instead.
Depending on who the player chooses to partner with, Elazul or Lady Blackpearl will follow the hero to the Bejeweled City to confront the Jewel Hunter. There, Sandra reveals her true identity as the Jumi of Alexandrite and her scheme to use her master's powers to fuse a thousand Jumi cores to save Forina. The 999th core eaten by the Lord of Jewels will either be Elazul or Blackpearl depending on the character previously chosen. Alexandra will sacrifice her core for the Lord to reach full power, but the main character defeats it and sheds tears of crystals to revive every Jumi people. Deeply touched by this selfless act, Elazul asks every Jumi to cry to bring them back to life. The Lapis Knight is lastly seen escorting Pearl and the hero back to their home safe and sound.
